GovernorBramlette humored the -thing, and wrote tbe New York ph arpera to send the pr iz3 by express, C. O. D. This the -New Yorkers did, and the $18 50 was paid to the express company, is was suspected, the prize was a m is crab lo brass watch, worth about $5. Having paid tho charges, Governor Bram? lette attached the money and the watch in the hand of the express company. This attach? ment will c impel the express company to hold both the watch and the money until judgment is rendered.. The judgment will probably be that the il 5 59 oe : stoned and the watch sold to pay costs. -The Radical papers of the North are ver\ savage io their comments upon tho letter written by Judge Chase, on the occasion cf the recent decoration of Federal graves at Mag? nolia. The New York Sun says : "So far as ?onrtofirrtB "oblivion of past differences,' and union is nobie and generous endeavor to as? sure the honor and welfare of our whole coon try, of all her State?, and of all ber oitizona,' every sensible man shares Judge Chase's senti? ments. Bat when bs expresses the hope that loyal men will join in celebrating tbe heroism of the rebels, whoso nefarious efforts were the ?aase of so muon bloodshed and destruction, and of whose exploits the tax-gatherer as he makes his daily rounds isa perpetual reminder, he goes too far, even tor tbe class whom he thus endeavors to litter. They cannot possi? bly believe him to be sincsro, while his loyal fellow-citizens must perforco loathe him ai a renegade and a turncoat, whoso drat principle is self-advancement, aud whose patriotism all a'ong has besn bul a specious pretence." -Mr. Hall, tte Mayor ot New York, delivcr e J no address at tho time of bi3 inauguration, bat he has now sent ia to the Common Council his annual message, which is one ot tho live? liest and most suggestive documents of thc kind ever presented. It abounds in sly hila and witty denuncia tion of the course of the State Legislature in taking away the principal branches of government from officers elected by the city, bat it contains, nevertheless, a great many practical recommendations which will be generally approved by those citizens even who axe most oppos9d to him in politics. The Mayor modestly assorts that there is little value in annual messages, their original signi? ficance and import anco having been "almost destroyed by the intelligent industry of the the public press. Reporters and editors glean tho fields of public and official information wt h each mieroeoopic minuteness and electri? cal dispatch, that scarcely any public officer, from cabinet ministers to constables, can an? ticipate press summaries and exposition?. In? deed, so mach of oar own offioial information L derived hem their exertions that this com munication is scarcely more than an official r?cognition an i recording of matters and 8tig gee tiona already made known by the news? papers/' -A Boston telegram, of Tuesday, to the New Tork Herald, says: "The Bpokes and tire, and everything else which gees to strengthen this great 'Hob of the Un'versj,' are being sadly shattered and weakened by the incessant and almost deafening noise uid jar of the rehearsals for that great National Peace Jubilee musical festival which is to come off here next week. It may truly and literally be said that 'there is music in the air,' for on every public thorough? fare, in every public hall, and in numerous private dwellings and general business he^d quarters there are primary rehearsals going on day and nigh!; artillery, wind and string in stru nents. anvils and vooal combinations are heard everywhere, and there is a general and sweetening bar nony of noise all around. There was a sort of general vocal rehearsal of about 5000 voices in the Music Hall this evening on which occasion the versatile Jubilee Gilmore wielded the baton himself. Tbe rehearsals were generally confined to the popular national airs, and such strain3 as 'Hail Columbia,' 'The Star Spangled Banner,' and the 'Barp that Once Through Tara's Hall,' were among tbose which were rendered more loudly, more sweetly and more effocii/ely than they ever were before or ever will bo again, except in tho Coliseum during the five days of Jubilee. On the morning precoJiag the iuauRurotion of the Jubilee there is to be a general rehearsal of the whole ra3t cborus. Musically, Bnancially and otherwise, then, it seems that this gigan? tic demonstration in honor of wiodiusr up tho great war is to be a success. Crowds and crowds are coming, if th:- bespeaking of hotel accommodations is any indication, and it is a pr?tiy sure thing that tbe week will be made a pleasant one for all, and that when thoy rc tura borne there will be a heartfelt and invol' untary exclamation of "Let us have Peace.' " CHARLESTON. SATURDAY MORNING, JUNE 12, 1869. Personal Property In Charleston. The following table shows the kinds and assesed Taine of personal property in Charleston County, according to the returns of the district assessors : Class. No. Value. 1. Horses.1684 $ 143.416 2. Stocks of Corporations out of this State, except National Banks.... 980.540 IC Bonds not exempt. 1,162,497 17. Leases. . 50,337 18. AU other property. 1,775.484 Total value.$8.613.501 The average Taine of the different kinds of property differs but very little from the averages of the whole State. In Charles? ton County eaoh horse is valued at $85, each head of cattle at $13, eaoh mule or ass at $102, each sheep or goat at $124, each hog at $3, eaoh piano forte or organ, at $102, eaoh pleasure carriage at $62, and .sch dog at $2 50. A comparison with the last census shows that we have 1684 horses against 2747 in I860, 1240 mules or asses against 1618, and only 7600 swine against 39,741 This last item indicates that the freedmen in this oounty have an especial fondness for the pork of their white neighbors. Oat of the 15.673 pleasure carriages in the State (a total which seems very large) there are bat 396 in Charleston County. This shows the degree in which the wealth of this part of the State has been dimin ishel Before the war Charleston City had more pleasure vehicles of different kinds than any other oity of the same size ia the United 8tates. Now the average in eaoh county is 505, and Charleston County, which ioelades a oity of 40,000 inhabitants, has but 396 Richland has 179, Picken-) 225, and Georgetown has 156 The horses we have now are, with bat few exceptions, work animals, and the same may, of course, be paid of the asses and males. The following table shows the namber of horses, cattle, &c, in four ooanties : Charleston, which includes this oity; Rich? land, which includes Columbia; Georgetown, one of the seacoast counties, and Pickens, whioh is ia the extrems northwest oorner of the State : Charles- Bich- O .orge- P ck ton. land, town. ens. Pickens is evidently not a musioal coun'y, bot is, we believe, to have a brass band before long to keep company with the five piano fortes or melodeons whioh now harmonize the county. We spoke yesterday of the apparently small amount ($5.391,283) returned as the total value of tho stock in (rads of the merchants of the State. O'" this amount Charleston returns $2 538.41G, Richland $086 914, Georgetown $121.770, and Pick? ens $3350. Omitting Charleston and Rich? land, the remaining 29 counties return only $2,405,923. Of the total credits ($3,718, 668) Charleston returi s only $808,724. Of the total amount of stocks of companies out of the State ($1,456,904) Charleston re? turn $900,540; and out of the total amount of bonds not exempt from taxation ($1,853, 991) Charleston has $1,162,497. These figures and the comparisons which they provoke will give our people some idea of their present condition, as reported by themselves. They prove that we are not so deep in the mire as to make it impossi? ble to extrioate ourselves, and that we have, indeed, already oaught sight of the turning in the long lane of our adversity. Wa CAR heartily commend to our read? ers the raoy ' Fish Story," whioh will be found in our Poet's corner this morning. Reviews. THE DODGE CLUB; OB ITALY TN 1869. With one hau dre d lilas tr at io DH. Ne* York : Harper ac Bros. Charleston : Holmes1 Book House, i Price 75 oentB. A bright and lively account of a lour through France and Italy, free from padding and "Guide Book" learning, is a novelty, and the chronicles of the Dodge* Club-ao called, be? cause it was their principle to dodge all hum? bugs and swindles which make travelling so expensive-do not flag in their interest from beginning to end. There is a dash of brigands, churches, temples, peasants, politics, enthu? siasm and Fourth of July, with a strong taste of matrimony, and these, combined with genuine fun, make up a picture ot travel which cannot but excite and amuse the reader. Many of the illustrations are very good; and all of them are up to the average. _ VANITY FAIR. By W. M. Thackeray. New York : Harper & Bros. Charleston : Holmes' Book House. Price 50 cents. This is the first volume ot Harper's cheap edition of Thackeray. It is beautifully printed and has the original illustrations so familiar to the admirers of thc great satirist. Vanity Fair is to-day as true a picture of life ?B when it was written. Tho blade of Thackeray is keen but polished, and though wielded by a steady hand, is guided by a gonerous heart. The other works of Thackeray-Pendennis, Esmond and the rest, will be published in thc same form and at thc same pi icc. THE POETICAL WOEKS OF HE SET KIRKE WHITE, with a life of the author. APPLETON'S JOURNAL OF LITERATURE, SCIENOE AND ART. Monthly parts, Noa. 1 and 2. Price 50 couts. Appleton's magazine is gaining as steadily in merit as in public favor. In it is pub? lishing a aerial by Mrs. Oliphant, as well as Victor Hugo's l'Homme Qui RU. Tho typog? raphy of the magazine ie superb, and tho sup? plements are indeed gems of art. Southerners will not forget that Appleton SfCo. have in no instance lent their nama to a work which slan? dered and calumniated our people. For sale by John Busae!L ti a year. THE WAVERLEY NOVELS.
