THE DAILY ffEWS. At the Fair. Lord Lovel he called for his milk-whit: steed. And he rode away to the nur, * And a maiden he found, who was sore in need, A maiden with golden hair. So soon as the lady Lord Level espied, She "went for him" then aad there, "New give ef thy gold, Lerd Lovel," she cried ; "Thy reward be the orphan's prayer." -1 will give thee geld-not for orphan's prayer, For of that I take no heed. Sut for a curl of thy golden nair. If it is thine indeed." "It surely ie mi BO, "the damsel said, "Lord Loi el, I truly swear;" So it was-bot it didn't grow on her head; The hair-dresser placed it there. Xord Lovel gave gold for that lovely curl, Much more than he would tell. And the maiden's smile showed her teeth of pearl As she said, "I hive sold him welL" "PUTS." How Stock Gambling is Conducted in Wall-street. [From the New York Mercantile Journal.] "What are "Puts?" asked a greenhorn of a Tnim in Wall-street. Well, replied the latter, - if I give yon a certain sam, say ten dollars, on condition that you allow me at any time I please, within a certain period, say three months from to-day, to give jon a cowhiding, I have bought and yon have sold what in stock exchange parlance means "a put." When yon get the biding yon would bo tho man put upon, and I would be the putter. Seriously, asked our friend the greenhorn, what ie meant by selling puts of gold, or puts Of stock? Fell, said the other, I w?l ti y to explaiD. Gold is selling to-day, August 1, at 150; I think it will go much lower; you tb ink quite other? wise; leay I will give you $500 if you will al? low me to put $20,000 of gold on you at any time within the next six months at 130. if *rou accept my offer I pay the $500 cash down, and you stand to he "put on" alias "shot at," during the next six months, If gold goes down to 1201 buy $20,000, which I car make you take from me at 130 within the specified ?time, and, if I do so, J. make $3500 by the ope? ration; but I may buy at 120 is three months; 801 have plenty of time to look about me, and if the market ?oes up again to 150 before aha expiration of the six months, I Bell at that figure and make $5500 set by the operation. Then, of course, I take more notice of you. Ton have got your $500 aad ne gold put upon jo*. . In that case, said the greenhorn, I have the beet of the bargain. 1 have made the $500 without any risk, while, if gold had net gone below $150 you would have lost the $500. But suppose, said the knowing one, that when you saw gold going down with a rna, you had sold $20,000 at $125, to protect your? self against the right I had to put it on you at $180, where weald you have been when the gold had risen to $150, and you found yourself Mund to deliver $20,000 at $1 25, which you had "sold short" in consequence of having sold me that "put?" Any way, you see I -could only have lost $500, but you could not liare told what your loss might bare been. ^Suppose, again, said our Wall-street man, thai J buy from you to-day (August 1) a put of Eries at 68, which I think much beyond their rame, giving you $5000 for allowing me to put .ne thousand shares of said stock upon you at 65 within three months. I wait until it goes down to S5, afid then IW the Ohe thoueanr? ? shares which I can make yea take from me at 65; then if the market does net rally beibre ihz expiration of three months, I put it on you as per contract, and make $30,000 by the opera- : rion, less the $5000 paid for the put, making the net gain to me, and loss to you, $25,000 as . the result of such a gambling transaction. If you want to understand the matter expe? rimentally, go and ask my friend Freecom, the . -broker, to sell "a put" fer you; thou you will find out all about it from actual experience. ; If, however, you will be guided by me, I will i S've you the same advice which Punch gave to e Ban that was going to be married-Dos r. j TjXPOlXART io THE BAB-TBANBFBB OF Cut- , pp~?8.-For the information of the members of the tar, we pob?sh the following order whieh has recently been.made, by Judge Meses, in ra.. , fereace to the circuits: j Vox causos deemed sufficient why Judge j Green, of the Third Circuit, and Judge Eutland, .f the Fourth Circuit, should be respectively \ transferred from one of the courts of their ' circuits, at the approaching term, it is ordered,. fox the purpose of carrying out the arrange? ments necessary therefor, that Judge Green hold the Circuit Court for Kershaw County, ? beginning on the first Monday in JaBuary ' next-that Judge Boozer hold the Circuit Court for Sumter County, beginning on the first Moudav in January next - that Judse : Boozer hold the Circuit Court for Fairfield ?
