How Stock Gambling is Conducted in
Wall-street.
[From the New York Mercantile Journal.]
"What are "Puts?" asked a greenhorn of a
Tnim in Wall-street. Well, replied the latter,
- if I give yon a certain sam, say ten dollars, on
condition that you allow me at any time I
please, within a certain period, say three
months from to-day, to give jon a cowhiding,
I have bought and yon have sold what in stock
exchange parlance means "a put." When yon
get the biding yon would bo tho man put upon,
and I would be the putter.
Seriously, asked our friend the greenhorn,
what ie meant by selling puts of gold, or puts

Fell, said the other, I w?l ti y to explaiD.
Gold is selling to-day, August 1, at 150; I think
it will go much lower; you tb ink quite other?
wise; leay I will give you $500 if you will al?
low me to put $20,000 of gold on you at any
time within the next six months at 130. if
*rou accept my offer I pay the $500 cash down,
and you stand to he "put on" alias "shot at,"
during the next six months, If gold goes
down to 1201 buy $20,000, which I car make
you take from me at 130 within the specified
?time, and, if I do so, J. make $3500 by the ope?
ration; but I may buy at 120 is three months;

and if the market ?oes up again to 150 before

Then, of course, I take more notice of you.

$180, where weald you have been when the
gold had risen to $150, and you found yourself

rame, giving you $5000 for allowing me to put

small. Yet continued light receipts and firmuess ol'

ever, the market clozes easy at 45c for merchantable
lots, being a decline of )?c on last week's quotations.
The salea amount to 850 bbls at 43i4*>?c merchant

ceipts 290 bbls. Exports 127 bbls. Accounts from
English markets continuo unfavorable, and tho

BOSTN-Ihe business runs chiefly on the lowar
grades, partly for export, but raaiuly on speculation ;
but SB offerings aro meagre we are able to report but
a light business, viz: 7600 bbls, all grades, chiefly
strained common, at $2 40 for strained: $2 42^ tor
good strained; $3a4 25 and $5a6 75 for pale to oxtra
pale. Receipts 9393 bbls; exports 5170 bois.
TAB-Continues very dull and in lixht demand.
We quote Wilmington $3 25a3 37^; Newbern and
Washington, $2 50a3 75.
PEANUTS-A! e dull and almost unsaleable, except
at ruinous rates, but we look for an improvement
after the holidays.
RICE-The receipts of Carolina exceed the de?
mand, and our market ic again easier. Prices range
from 8?9c for fair to prime.

COLUMBUS, December 25.-CenoN-During the
week tho demand bas beon modciate for higher
grades-low middlings to the highest. Tbs sales at
the warehouses have not been equal to thoso of tbe
previous week, though tho teceipts have been far
greater. Tho belief is still strone among the ma?
jority in this section that the highest prices have
not yet been reached Cotton has been crowded
into the city this week. This, however, is an inva?
riable custom with farmers. The week preceding
Christmas is always the heaviest as regards receipts
at this point Considerable quantities of bag. tug
and rope are being sold. The earlier portion of ihe
weeli was clondy and slightly rainy. On Wednesday
the weather turned very cool. Thursday morning
there was a little snow. Though the skies have beeu
clear, the weaber for the past two days has been the
coldest of the season.
On Saturday our market was variable with North?
ern middlings at 22 l?a23: ; sales 305 Dales. Monday
-in moderate demand at 22>ia22?,?c; ?168154 bales.
Tuesday-rather dull. 22>ic; sales 233 balee. Wed?
nesday-good demand at 22??a22??c; soles 557 bales.
Thursday, same condition; eales 432 bales. To-day
the warehouses did not sell a bale. Banks were
