CECELIA Soc .ir.-At the one hun? dred and second anniversary meeting of this Society, held on Monday evening last, the fol lowing (facers were elected : WM. RA YEN El, President. E. P. MILLIKEN, vice-President. T. PDTCKNEY LOWNDES, Secretary and Treasurer. POLICE ITEMS.-James Birgina, colored, was appr?hende.? yesterday for having in his pos? session a coat claimed by Louis Banks. Cathe? rine Rutledge was lo Iged in the Upper Wards Guardhouse, by ber mother, for safe keeping, Catherine not having behaved according to the old lady's standard. / -.--ii A YOUNO HOPEFUL.-James Brown? a very small colored youth, walked into the millinery establishment of Mrs. Srackley, King-street, near Boaufain, yesterday, and arter fitting his knowledge-box to a nobby hat, made off with? out paying. His race was brief, aUd resulted, in hi3 lodgment in the guardhouse. A?SAULT ANT? BATTEBX.-Nancy Weston, a colored denizen of Tradd-straet, got into a dispute yesterday with a white woman re? siding in the same locality, which culminated in tbe latter making an assault and battery on Nancy. Both parties were arrested and car? ried to the guardhouse, where they gave bail for their appearance this morning; THE BASE BALL MATCH ON THE CITADEL GREEN.- The match between the Alert and Liberty Clubs yesterday afternoon drew quite a crowd of spectators. A number of lady wit? nesses were on the look out from*the Citadel, as was a so many officers of the garrison. These clnbs did not play in full force, but by their representative nines. The game waa exciting up to the third bining, when a want of practice began to tell on. the Alerte, who hare been resting on their bats since their contest with the Forest City. Darkness coming on before the fifth inning was concluded, the game was called, making it void. It will probably be played over on some future occasion. As the weather cools base balling grows less pipular, the sport being adapted to the summer. ANOTHER G SAND SACRED ORATORIO.-We aro pleased to announce that a repetition of tho - Grand Sacred Oratorio, heard with BO much pleasure some time ago to a full audience in ' St. Patrick's Church, will take place about two weeks hbneo in St. ?Patrick's Church, under somewhat better circumstances. Professor Eckel, who will conduct the programme, has secured the Roman music of the Rev. Father Schachte. The choruses will be rendered by a full corps, and in a manner in keeping with tho importance of the occasion. Tho services of Professor Deden, of the Chapel, Queen street, have been secured, and he will lead the - choruses. The " Saengerbund '. will contri? bute materially to the occasion, under the di? rection of Professor Hoffmaniw Some of our best amateur singers will be present, and lend the charm of their voice to this expected trial. The proceeds of this Oratorio are ta be devoted to tho choir of St. Paul's Church. There will, no doubt, bc a liberal support given to this ob? ject. EXTENSIVE NEW PHOSPHATE WOBKS.-We un? derstand that a company, with a capital of $1,000,000, have leased tho premises known as Biker's Mill, and intend to erect commodious works for the manufacture o; fertilisers out of the Carolina phosphates, so iJieatiful in the locality. Buildings ara now in progress of construe;ion, whioh when completed will cost $12,000. Al! tho necessary appliances of ma? chinery for grinding and crushing the rock in its natural state are to be speedily obtained and put up. The wharf leading out to thc stream is to be strengthened, and a railway laid to facilitate the loading of vessels, which will not bc deterred taking in cargo at any tide, as thc depth of water is snfiicient under all circumstances. The effect of the discovery of this important article is already beinrr felt; a house ia Now York thai used to sell $50,000 worth of the fertilizer in our midst alone, is storing their property, not only hero, but oven out west, as far as Cincinnati-the demand for the Carolina article exceeding all others. Williams, tho new but already very popular pastor of the First Baptist Church, preached a very interesting sermon yesterday, lhauks giving Day. He remarked, ia substance, that we should look upon the sevore trials that have over? shadowed us as merciful dispensation of God, an ordeal which shall purify us, aDd ultimately develope for His people's good. He was listen? ed to with marked attention, ana elicited many warm expressions of approval on the part of bis hearers. We are glad to learn that already the church ia feeling the effects of Mr. Wil? liams' faithful ministry, and that there are some accessions to (li? congregation, andmore expected. THE TEEATBE-LEAH.-Another full house testified to the merits of Gilbert's troupe last night. The play was well performed, and the principal actors were repeatedly applauded. Some mischievous fellow turned oft" the gas, which left the audience in Egyptian darkness fer a few minutes, but good order was pre? served, and the hall immediately lighted up again. To-night will be performed the great moral temperance drama of "Ten Nights in a Barroom." Little Eate Gilbert, only twelve years old will appeal- as Mary Morgan, the Drunkard's child. Tho performance will con? clude with the amusing farce of "The Ghost." This is positively the last appearance of this excellent company in Charleston. MB. COWARDIN'S LECTURE LAST NIGH. South Carolina Hall was filled la9t evening by a select audience to hear tho famous lecture en? titled ' The Humors of Reconstruction," by James P. Cowardin, Esq., formerly reporter for the Richmond Dispatch. Although thc ex? pectations of the audience had been raised to a very high pitch by the great fame of Mr. Cow? ardin, which had come before bim, they were not disappointed. The absurdities and incon? gruities of the Virginia Reconstruction Con? vention wer* depicted in such a humorous and life-like manner that the audionce were con? vulsed with uncontrollable laughter. Mr. Cow? ardine powers of mimicry aro unrivalled, and with tho eyes shut, it was almost impossible for one familiar with such scenes not to imag? ine himself in the midst of a reconstructed leg? islative 'Assembly. Mr. Cowardin lu3 generously offered to re? peat his lecture for the benefit of tho Widows' Home, and our people should net neglect the opportunity thus afforded them of acquiring from his descriptions that knowledge r f the new regime under which they are compelled to live, which self-respect and a love of decency prevented them from obtaining by actual expe? rience. Mr. C. can promise them one hoar's hearty laugh for the price of their ticket, and .they can at the sam? time have the satisfac? tion of knowing that they have contributed their mito to one of the noblest charities of the age. In 18i7 the gre?t grand principle of slopping the most excruciating paiu in an instant, without om pk"!ig such dangerous agents as Chloroform, Opium, Morphine, Acou?ne, Ether, fee., was first made known in RAD WAY'S READY RELIEF. This remedy accomplished this n ondcrful and de? lightful desideratum in all cases of external and in? ternal pain. In an instant it afforded relief, the moment it was applied to the parts ot the body where inflammation or pain existed-It at once re? lieved the patient of tho most violent and excruciat? ing pangs und throbs of pain, and imparted the de? lightful sensation of ease and comfort. Every kind of pain, whether Rheumatism, Neu? ralgia. Toothache, Pains iu the Chost, Side, Lungs, stomach. Bowels, Kidneys, spine, Legs, Arms, Feet, one application was sufficient to kill aud extern luate thc pain. Taken internally, twenty drops to a teaspoonful would cure, and will cure, Asiatic Cholera, Fever ami Ague, Chills cud Fever, Bilious Colic, Inflam? mation of tho Bowels, Cramps, Spasms, Diarrhoea, Dysentery, and every pam tlrat may exist in thc in? side ol man. woman or child: this was RADWAY's READY RELIEF of 1847, and it is RADWAY'S RE? LIEF, greatly improved, in lsfis. Wethen started it tu cs mission of relieving the infirm, patn-stneketu si tk, distressed and crippled ot all natious throughout the world, and now to-day it is used, patronized and revered as a household necessity, iii the palacs of Sultans, Emperors, Kain os, Kin;;*, High Priests, Nobles, as well as In the cottages of tho laboring cla.ses of every nation a the face cf tho earth. .:O:?GES5'?ON OF THE LUNGS CURED IN fUIBT?
