SUCH IS FASTE.-The cry of the negro news? boys about Charleston at present is: "Doyou wantabookabout?east?utlerthespoonthiefair ?" PERSONAL.-Ex-Governor James L. On arrived in this city on Tuesday. Hon. George S.Bryan, United ?States District -Judge, returned to town yesterday. SOLICITOR NOMINATED.-The Democrats of the First Congressional District Lave nominat? ed Major A. J. Shaw for Solicitor of the Fourth Circuit._ . REMOVAL.-Coroner Whiting has removed from Church-street to a larger and more com .modtous ofiico on the south side of Broad street, a few doors west of Church. ROBBERY AND ATTEMPTED ARSON.-The house of Mr. John Jan?s, in Columbia, was entered .on Monday night, and robbed of sundry arti? cles o? clothing and provisions. An attempt was also made to fire the house, but it was un? successful._ RANDOLPH'^ SUCCESSOB.-The Radicals of Orantjiburg County have nominated Lieu terant Green, agent of the Freedmen's Bu? reau at that place, to fill the vacancy in the State Senate cttued by the death of B. F. Ran? dolph._ REPUBLICAN MANIFESTO.-We publish this : morning a manifesto from some of the leaders of the Republican party in this State, urging their party to pursue a course of peace, and -expressing a desire to coincide in the policy proposed by the recent address of the Demo . eratic Executive Committee. FLUE IN OBANGEBURG.-On Sunday morning last about ten o'clock, tbo kitchen of Mr. D. Lewis, in the village of Orangeburg, was dis ? coverel to be on fire. Some alarm was occa? sioned, but the .Ore company turned out with their apparatus and soou extinguished the ?fiamos. The loss was small, and fully covered by insurance. Tho origin of the fire was acci? dental._ THE HON. JAMES L. PETIQBU.-There ie on exhibition at Courtenaj's, in Broad-street, a -fine portrait of the late James L. Petigru. Tho -coloring is soft and delicate, the position easy and natural, and the likeness life-hke. Wo -understand that it is the work of a lady, with whom it was a labor of love, and it is a precious memoiial of one who, had tie lived, would have -been in these troublous times a toner of j strength to his poople. THE GERMAN CHURCH.-The work on this -church has been renewed and is slowly pro? gressing. The walls have already been raised .-several foet, and tbe arches for tho windows have been placed in position, lt will be a -aUon? and substantial building when com? pleted, as tue greatrst care has been taken by 'the contractor, Mr. Devereux, to have the work .done thoroughly, and the Germ?.us will have cause to be proud of their church. A RELIC OF THS LATE WAS.-Mr. W. F. Port? ing, while fis'iing of? Robb's Mill yesterday, drear up an old muokef. The gunboat Charles? ton was blown up at this point, and the musket was probably a part of her armament. The -stock was rotted away except whire the wood had been charred, tho ramrod was nearly eaten in tso with rust, and the whole gun covered with oyster.shells. Mr. Porting has the gun at ..his storo, corner of Laurens and Wharf streets, where it can be seon by thc curious. A NEW FBEIQHT.-Several large blocks ot marble were ieceivod ia this city yesterday from Tennessee, and shipped to New York on the tchooner Myrover. This marble is of a pe -culiar purplish tint, aLd beautifully variegated. It is susceptible of a high polish, and has been used in the construction of tho capitol at Wash? ington. Some of it was brought to Columbia before the war for thc State capitol. These wero all shaped for uso, but were destroyed bl? ithe fire. The blocks shipped to New Yoi!- are intended for building purposes. NEW YORK LIFE INSURANCE COMPANY.-Tho profits of this company have been so immense in the last four or five years that they have re ?cently bought a lot in a business portion of | .New York for the extravagant sum of $473,000, and are about to erect on it a building which will cost $1,000,000. Ihis company commenced business in 13-15 with a capital of $50,000, and -now has the enuimons accumulation of nearly $12,000,000. Last j ear it issued 6596 polioies. '.The agent of the company in this city is Mr. Thomas Frost, No. 51 Broad-street. HOTEL ARRIVALS, October 28_Cltarlestou Hotel- Quntus Richards, Crawfords ville, Ga.; S. Hutson Lee sold on last Tuesday, at the old customhouse, one undivided halt' interest iu a lot of land and buildings thereon, situate on the north aide of Spring-streot, one dcor wes: of Ashley-street, the lot moasur ins two hundred and twenty nine feet trout by three hundred aud'nineteen deep, for $1625; one-half cash, the balance in one year. A tract of ?and containing ten acros, Rear the village of Summerville, for $3 per acre; one-half cash, thc balance in one year. THE ALLEGED OITTRJOES iv UNION.-The Democratic Club of Union Courthouse have adopted resolutions indignantly repelling tho charges contained in Governor Scott's recent proclamation, of anarchy and lawlessness among tue people of that district. The resolu? tions declare that "there has not been a singlo instance of resistance to .the laws in Utiion County," that there haw Leen only two homi? cides since January last, ono negro killed by a negro, the other a white man kdled by a white man, the quarrel in both instances being wholly disconnected from politics. Tho re maindei of the allegations contained in tho proclamation are taken up and denied scrta tum. THE BAKE OF THE STATE.-Thc mandamus in this case came np before Justice Willard yesterday. Isaac W. Hayne, E-?q, opened the argument on behalf of tho President and Direc? tors of the bank, and also DU behalf of Baring Brothers. The chief point of his argument was to show thar the act under wh ch the mandamus was prayed was unconstitutional because it impaired the obligation of contracts. For this purpose ho cited the case ot Curran vs. The State of Arkansas, 15 Howard's Rep., in which the whole matter was examined at length by tho United States Supreme Court, and similar acts cf the Arkansas Legislature set aside. Mr. Hayne also opposed the ?ian? dam:? on the ground that a sui:, involving tho same subjoct matter, was pending ina Conn of competent jurisdiction. THE MINSTRELS.-Another full house greet? ed the minstrels last night, and the fan was both fast and furious. The tioupe is undoubt? edly the best that has visited this city since the days of the Campbells, and they have all of the original humor that characterized that corps of performers. The jokes and conun? drums are very good, and some capital hits are made by the two ' End" men. As thc pro? gramme is changed every night, there is always something new presented to thc audience, and a visitor can have a fresh fuud of amusement each night. Master Willie Gaylord is the won? der of the age, and his feats of ability are sui piising, and would almost put the Japanese to blush. One half of the engagement is over, and all who like to laugh dull care away should visit the minstrels at once. A NEEDED IATPCOVEOIENT.-Vandci host street, between Sc. Philip and Rutledge, is now in a deplorable condition. It is subject to be overflowed at high tides, and is flooded by every rain, the water remaining on tho ground until evaporated. This street is tho great thoroughfare for all persons going to the up? town market, or to the different churches in the neighborhood. Ia many plac2S the curb? ing is higher than tho sidewalk, and the latter is converged into a quagmiro. through which pedestrians are compelled to ploue.li their way. Some attempts have been made to improve the sidewalks by filling it with the street sweepings, bnt this proved to bo comparative? ly useless. The asphaltum pavements in other sections of the city have given general satisfac? tion, and it is desirable that stops should bo j tiken to have one laid in Vatiderhorst-?trcot, where ic is essential to comfort. GRAKD SACRED OBATOSIO.-On Sunday night next a grand sacred oratorio will be given nt St. Patrick's Church, corner of Radcliffe and St. Philip streets. Professor Eckel, who is not only an excellent musician, bu* ?ne of tlip most successful musical manager? in the city, will have charge of the arrangements and direction of the performance of the oratorio, aud thus success is at once guaranteed. A largo array of the professional and amateur vocal and in? strumental musical talent of Charleston has been engaged to assist the worthy professor, and the music loving public can promise them? selves a rare treat. The pieces to be performed ate some of the grandest conceptions of the masters, and the effect of such music rendered by a full And i alen ted choir, accompanied by a large orgtn and oilier instruments, can be bet? ter imagined than described. The price of ad? mission is only fifty conts, and tickets can be had at the Charlosto i Hotel, at thc bookstores of Messrs. Russell, Greer and Holmes, at Dr. Aimar's drug store, and at thc doors of the ohurch. JOHN ROBINSON'S Bro SHOW.-This great hip? podrome, with all tho attractions of sawdust and spangles, clowns, actors and riders, will make its appear? .co to-day. A circus >s al? ways well attended, and this will prove no ex? ception to the mle. especially os in addition to other novelties, it adds a menagerie compri? sing all known birds and beasts, L: eluding thc great Tartary Valpus. The latter feature alone is sufficient to draw a crowd, especially if the unknown animal is like his photograph on the poster. The especial features of thc circus are champion bare-back riding by tho world renowned equestrienne Cordelia, a leip over seventeen horses by George M. Kelley, and hurdle riding by thc colored boy Le wis. Bare? back riding b a female is a rare and extraor? dinary perf nuance, but Cordelia challenges the Brazilian or any other man to a contest. This circus claims to be the best that ever vis? ited Charleston, and the menagerie combina? tion lenders it very attractive to parents and children. The Citadel Green to-night. DOJ'C forget._ ANOTHER ADDITION TO THE EAST BAT MER? CHANTS.-The new building on East Bay, op? posite tho Customhouse, was occupied yester? day by the proprietors, Messrs. Welch & Brandes, who have now every facility for con? ducting a large business in fruits aud produce. The ?-toro vas built by Mr. Waiter Cado, and th a wood work done by Mr. Albert Elfe. It was constructed especially for Messrs. Welch A Brandes, and has an abundance of light and ventilation, two essentials for tho pr?servation of finit. It is two Btories in height, with a iront of thirty-five feet, and is eighty-two teet ?n depth, with nniple yard room and outbuild? ings. The centre door is wide enough to admit a wapoif, and all West India fruits will bc brought into thc bk.re from the vessel iu this way. It is well known that thc frequent hand? ling of fruit injures it, and thc bunches of ban? anas will be taken from the wagons in the stoic and huug on hooks prepared for the pur? pose. Messrs. Welch & Brandes have made nrrangements to receive 1 ige invoices from the West Tudies. and as tho quarantine has been raised a cargo may bo expected in a few days. Although tho summer is -generally a duii time >rith produce merchants, thc time was not allowed to be wasted, and Messrs. Welch and Brandes have einp'o. ed it most pro? fitably in putting up pickled shrimps. These are prepared from a patent, and warranted to keop ton years. They fird a re dy sale iu Bal? timore and the Northern cities. The new store is an ornament to tho street, and thc pro? prietors arc both energetic busiiK s men who will strive to develope our resources, and will build up a trad; that must prove lucrative and successful WANDO MININO AND MANUFACTURING COM? PANY.-At a meeting of the stockholders of the Wando Mining and Manufacturing Com? pany, the following gentlemen were elected as officers for the ensuing year: JOHN R. DUKES. Pr.sident DIRECTORS. L D. MOWRY. I F. J. PELZ ER. J. D. AIKEN. GE". E. GIBBON. W. G. wHTLDEN. The company now owns Patton's wharf, and is making arrangements for an extensive busi? ness. The fertilizer is entirely domestic in its composition, and gives, we under staud, general satisfaction. BUSINESS NOTICKS.
