CQBONEB'S INQUEST.-Coroner Whiting yes? terday held an inquest on John Terry, a sea? man who died at the Hampstead Hospital from injuries received while on board the schooner j Geo. C. Morris. It appeared from the testimo? ny that," while off Cape Hatteras, Terry ou dered aloft, and the vessel jibing, he missed his hold and was thrown, first into ?he sheet,' and then into the waist of the schooner. When taken up he was insensible, in which condition he remained for about ten minutes. He was taken to the cabin, aud bruises found on his left arm, breast and bead. On arriving at this port the accident was reported to Messrs. EL F. Baker & co., the consignees, and Terry was sent to the Hampstead Hospital on last Friday. On Saturday he died, and a post mortem ex- I andnation was held by Dra. S. L. Lockwood and Chas. B. Dennean. The jury rendered' a j verdict in' accordance with the facts-that the deceased came to his death from injuries re? ceived whiV ia the discharge of his duties aa a seaman on board the schooner Geo. 0. Grace, presented his report, in the course of whioh he says : In the presence Of embarrassments of more than ordinary import,. and many of them by reason of the novelty of our enterprise, diffi? cult to anticipate; in spite of doubts and ap? prehensions on the part of those who, failing to be impressed with tho feasibility of cc-ope ratioi, or the sincerity of its professors, or being influenced by motives of interest, were - zealous in predicting a speedy failure-our" propre ss has suffered-no interruption. The promptitude with which our obligations have been met has removed all diffidence from the minds of creditors, and trade at first withheld is now gratuitously and eagerly offered. The Assocdatjpn now commanda the most implicit confidence, and is privileged to avail itself of the best possible terms of the market. Noting the proportion of gross profits to amount of sales effected, it will be observed that they reach as high as fifteen per centum, while after deducting.expenses (necessarily very heavy in the start), it. bears the ratio of four per centum. Compared with capital stock sub cribed by stockholders, the net gain is se venteen, per oentum very nearly. Supposing. We copy the more interesting portions of this docu? ment. But firmly impressed .with the idea that it was worth a trial, we broke ground on the day alluded to. ', 1 Contrary td our expectations, and much to I < our encouragement* we met' with a liberal de- | i groe o? patronage from our stockholders and the pubiic generally, and in a ?hort time gained considerable headway both from the addition of new names to our roll, and an increase of patronage and trade. . Wo had kt first, many disadvantaged to con? tend with which proved of serious inconvenience to ns, and these principally arose from a lack of confidence in us felt by business men outside of our city. They bad heard of such institu? tions at a great distance, but were very suspi? cious of them nearer home, and although fur? nished with undoubUd references both in this I ? city and elsewhere, some time el peed before we could get goods outside of this market, parties frequently refusing or declining to ship 1 without assigning any reason for so 1 doing; others taking no notice whatever ] of our communications, and others again ? who shipped us one bill of goods declin? ing to ship again, notwithstanding the fret that their drafts had been promptly and duly honored. All this occasioned not only incon? venience, but heavy loss, for by being com? pelled to purchase goods in this mirket, we had to pay from five to ten per cent, higher than other first-class dealers, and were yet forced to sell at as low rates. The effect of this is clearly demonstrated by the small divi? dend declared, and the statement shown by 1 tho treasurer's balance sheet. We have by I this time succeeded in establishing confidence I in the reliability of the Association, and are able to procure without difficulty whatever goods we heed.. - 2 As soon aa tho warm weather began wo dis- ? covered that our s tore was a most uncomforta? bly warm one, thus occasioning more oriels 1 detriment to goode of a perishable nature, of 1 which class our stock is necessarily so largely v composed.
