March SO lyr H CROFT'S LOW WATER DETECTOR PREVENTS THE EXPLOSION OE BURNING O?T OF STEAM BOILEBS. THE PRIME CAUSE OF STEAM BOILER EX? PLOSIONS ARISES FROM A DEFICIENCY OF WATER IN THE BOILER WHILE IN ACTION. EXPLOSIONS FROM DEFICIENCY OF WATER. Low water In steam boilers is no unusual occur reuce. Imminent danger frequently arises from this cause, and it cannot be too forcibly impressed upon the minds of engineers, that there is no part of the apparatus constituting the mountings of a boiler which requires greater attention than that which sup? plies it with water, lu a properly constru? ted boil? er every part of the metal exposed to the action of the fire should be in immediate contact with tho wa t-r, and when proper provision is made to maintain thu water at a eufflWent height above the parts so exposed, accidents can never occur from this cause. Should the water, however, get low from defects in the pump, and the surface over the fire become over? heated, then, even at the ordinary working pressure, there is great danger of an explosif n. -There is no occasion, under such circumstances, to search furth? er for the canse of explosion, from the fact that the material, when overheated to a certain desTcc loses about five-sixths of its strength, and ls, therofore, unable to resist the internal pressure. When a boiler becomes short ol water, the first thing usual? ly done is to put the feed pump in action; this cer? tainly remedies the deficiency, but increases the danger, and may lead lo the explosion of the boiler. Ashcroft's Low Water Detector Is eminently fitted to guard against accidents caused by low water. Itneeds not the care or attention of the engineer or fireman to keep it m order. Opera? ting by the force of natural laws, it takes care of it? self, and is only called into action by the fall of the water below any fixed level, and then it gives the alarm to all within sound of the whistle of a defi? cient supply of water. It stands as a watchful monitor over the magi zinc of power on which it is placed, and not only guards it, but notifies the attendant, if he is forgetful or negligent of his duty. JOHN F.
