In thismatterof turning to the best ac? count the gifts of oar fertile soil, North Carolina has taken the lead. IQ Virginia, the sassafras has been picked and* sold bj the ton'weight, and even pokeberries have been in demand. But barren lands in the "Old North State" have been made the richest for the poor. Not a herb or weed that would bring a price j has been nog lee ted, and last year there were shipped to the North thousands ef dollars' worth of ra mach leaves, blackberries, and varions fruits thought to be of little value "while our -sits were dull. lu blackberries, at all events, we can compete with our neighbor, and there is no reason why the blackberry crop of 1869 should not give food and clothing to num? bera of destitute poor. Fruits of all kinds Sourish ia this State. Peaches we have ibis year in abundance, and in the begin? ning of thc season they bring high prices in New York, Philadelphia or Baltimore. Dried fruits, also, always command a mar? ket Thousands of bushels can be sent from every district in the up country, sad in their preparation can be employed cbil iren, who do nothing now bat fall kilo trouble and mischief. There should be no difficulty in sending these fruits to market. The steamship 1 ines will make low rates, and are enlarging their accommodation as the demand in? creases. Our railroads will douhtless do the same thing; for it is their interest, and ts the very A ii C of their policy, to encour? age as much os possible local improvement ind trade. We can live in the upper districts of Car? olina without cotton, and in tho low coun? try we shall do better as we seo the n< ces nty of not staking a fortune on a caterpil? lar, and the prudence of preferring a small but safe crop lo a magnificent planting spec? ulation. Slow and steady is a good motto, ind ii will serve our purpose now. The UnsdnlteraSed Negro. Hayti has been independent fer about lalf a century, and daring that time the Tay tiens have been gradually returning to heir natural barbarism. Independence of vbite control was too much for the strength a* tho negro. The race wa? unfit, for civil zation, and has done all that it could to drag r#Vn civilization to its own level, by graft hg European vices on its normal inferior? ly, and by adding to the religion of the fhite mau the savage supers titi ona ef idol ItrouB Fetish worship. But the negro is tn imitative animal, and, having no moral crupi?s, bas played the game of revolu ion with sad but ludicrous success. There tave been Presidents, Dictators, Emperors n succession, and the last stage-one more rictator1- seems to be worse than the first. Anarchy is the natural condition off a le.ople who, unfit to govern themselves or there, ape the manners and customs of a rjrtte nation, and this has in a few years lade the finest island in the Carribean ea a wilderness and waste. There are no, oade, no plantations, no streets, no manu ioturfes. PLOSIONS ARISES FROM A DEFICIENCY OF WATER IN THE BOILER WHILE IN ACTION. EXPLOSIONS FROM "DEFICIENCY OF WATER. Low water In steam boilers ls no unusual occur? rence, lunn incut danger frequently arises from this cause, and it cannot he loo forcibly impressed upon the minde ol' engineers, that Uiere is no part of the apparatus cou?tituiiug tho mountings of a bolter which requires greater attention tuau that which rrap plies it with water, In a properly constructed boil? er every part of the metal exposed to the action of the fire should he in immediate contort with the wa? ter, and when propgr provision is modo to maintain the water at a suninent height above tho parts BO exposed, occidents can never occur from this cause. Should the water, however, get low from defects in the pump, and the surface over the fire become over? heated, then, even at the ordinary working pressure, there is great dangor ol' an explosion, lhere is no occasion, under anch cirenmatances, lo search furth? er for the cause of explosion, from the fact that tho material, when overheated to a certain degree loses about five-sixths of its strength, and is, thereiore, unable to resist the Internal pressure. When a boiler becomes short of water, tho first thing usual? ly dono ls to pntthe feed pump in action; this cer? tainly remedied the deficiency. Imf increases the danger, and may lead to the explosion of the boiler. Ashcroft'* Low Water Detector Is eminently fitted to guard against accidents caused by low water. It need s uot thc care or attention of tbe engineer or fireman to keep it in order. Opera? ting by the force of natural laws, it takes, care-of it? self, and is only called into action by the fall of the water below auy fixed lev.-l. and then it gives the 'alarm to all within sound of the whistle of a deft ? clent supply or water. It stands as a watchful monitor over the magazine of power on which it ls placed, and not only guards it, but noUfies the atteudant, if ho is forgetful or negligent of his duty. JOHN E.
