Sales 15,000 bales. -A French savant undertakes to prove that Solomon's Temple was furnished with light? ning rods. -The Fenian circle of Nashville have agreed upon a convention in May to raise $500,000 before making ano ther raid. -The Western skating .rinks are to be kept open all summer, parlor skates on a smooth floor compensating for the veritable steel and ice. -Several manuscripts, a silver chalice, and other articles of known antiquity, have already been procured in Abyssinia for the British Museum. -The prisoners in the Mississippi penitenti? ary are hired out to the planters under suffi? cient guards. In this way room is obtained for the fresh convicts. -The proposed new opera house in Louis? ville, Ky., it is announced, will be four stories high, will seat eighteen hundred persons com? fortably, and will cost $125.000. -The drama of Oliver Twist, adapted from Dickens, has been interdicted by the censor in England. Tho scenes at the thief Fagin's house were the objectionable parts. -Henry Ward Beecher says iii a recent ser? mon : '"When men are insane they ought not to be allowed to han? themselves, but when men are fools-there is a question." -In New York, the Legislature has passed a bill empowering railroad conductors to make arrests, and giving them the authority of spe? cial policemen, tho better to preserve order on their railway trains. -A number of stalks of winter wheat grown in Georgia, already headed, have been on ex? hibition at the New York Produce Exchange, and judging from these a portion of the crop would be ready for harvesting in about two weeks. -Two influential curates of the diocese of London recently announced by letter to the Bishop of London that they had' joined the Church of Borne. It is said that many other clergymen of the same diocese are about to take the same step. -There are ten thousand private schock and three thousand endowed schools in Et.g land. Of the endowed schools seven hundred and eighty-two are classical and two thousand two hundred and eighteen non-classical, or devoted to the education of the laboring classes. -The Galveston papers are warning the Texans not to emigrate to Mexico in the hopes of bettering their condition. That country, they say, is too insecure for them to hope to live comfortably, and the risks of banditti and constant outrage are far worbo than any disap? pointment that may have been caused by the failure of the rebellion. -The British authorities, some time ago, imprisoned an irishman, a Mr. Johnstone, in Downpatrick jail, for too groat zeal in pro daiming the woes of his unfortunate country. He has completed tho term of his sentence, but will remain in jail a month longer, preferring to do that rather than give bonds to keep the peace for six months. His friends propose to compensate his Bufferings by sending him to Parliament. -Forney, who has clamored so savagely for the impeachment of the President, is now un? der impeachment himself. A senatorial com? mittee is to investigate the mysterious disap? pearance of $4O,CO0 public money in the custo? dy of this chevalier d1industrie. Forney says , the money was stolen by bis uncle, old Mr. Wagner. The old man denies it. It is evi? dent, from what occurred in tho Senate about the matter Wednesday, that Cameroo, who knows both men, and ia a good judge of rogues, believes that Forney is the thief. -There is somewhat of a scare among the Fenians in Canada siuce thc murder of Thomas D'Arcy McGee. A dispatch from Montreal states that the Canadian Government has seiz? ed the correspoudenco between tho Circles in Canada and the United States, and that many prominent Fenians in Canada are leaving for the United Stat&s in consequence. There is also a report that some of tho documents seiz? ed show that the assassination was plotted in New York, and that tho murder of McGee will therefore form the subject of diplomatic cor? respondence between the two countries. -Thero is some talk in New York about a race across the Atlantic tetween the City of Paris (Inman) and tho Cuba (Cunard). The latter is considered the crack boat of the Eng? lish line, while the City of Paris claims to have made the quickest western passage ever ac? complished (eight days twenty-two and a half hours). Mr. Cunard is said to have made a wa rer that the Cuba will arrive out first. Both vosnels sailed on Saiui day, within a few min? utes uf each oth?r, amidst murrh excitement on the part of their respective partisans on tbe wharves. -The statement that Congress will take a recess about the time of thc Chicago Conven? tion is not credited by the Baltimore Sun. It Bays: "Senator Sherman has solemnly warned tho majority in Congross thal they dure not go before the people in tho next Presidential elec tiou without having devised some acceptable system in regard to thc finances and the public debt; and tho question of internal taxation is one of scarcely leis importance. Then the fight on tho tari?" will be more bitter than ever this year. Most of tho largo appropropriation bills are yet to be acted upon. From this it will be readily seen that thero is plenty before Congress to keep it hard at work for three months to come without taking recesses to at? tend political ?.onventions." -Tho '"Thames embankment" is at present the subject of admiration in London. The Times Bays it will be "ona of the finest quays that any capital in Europe possesses." Several years will still be required to complete it. This embankment consists of a river wall of granite, eight feet thick, averaging over forty feet high, with its foundations from sixteen to thirty feet below the river bcd, and extending about 7000 feet. In the formation of this wall and the auxiliary works of drainage, subways, and fill? ing in with earth behind it, there have been used nearly 700,000 cubic feet of granite, about 50,000,000 bricks, over 300,000 bushels of nient, and nearly 1,000,000 cubic feet of o crete. Besides this, 125,0?0 cubic yards earth have boco dug out, ard no less tl 1,200,000 cubic yards of earth filled in. -According to thc Minneapolis (Minn.) 1 brue, Mrs. George Holt and Mrs. J. W. Br ham, of that city, with a brother residing Chicopee, 3Iass., are sole heil* to an estate $1.30,000, bft by a brother, who died in Detn Mich., twenty-six years since, and which 1 been fraudulently withheld from tho heirs that time. It appears that Jonas C. Brigha sou of Dr. Luther Brigham, of Chicop Mass., went to Detroit in 1833 and engaged business. Four years later an accident i curred by which he was instantly killed, this rimo ho was betrothed to a daughter Colonel Brooks, a wealthy gentleman, w wrote to Brigham's father, giving an accoi of his death, and offering to settle the c ceased's estate, which he represented to trifling. He was aocordiugly made admin trator, and, after a little timo badpassi wrote to Mr. Brigham that his sou left nothi but a gold watch and clothing, which the c miuistrator thought t.hould be given him 1 his trouble. This was accepted as a truo sta mont, and the matter dept quietly until abc three months since, when a trifling circu stance led the relative*, to think that there h been uufairness in tho settlement. An inv< titration developed tho fact that Mr. Bright had died possessed ti $150,000 worth of ri est?te, the income from which had been e joyed by the adminis trator and the Judge Probate for twenty-six years. Several weeks ago, animated by a d sire to accommodate the mercantile coi munity of the State, the South Carolii Railroad Company issued tickets, coverir a thousand miles of travel, at the low pri< of $25 each. The plan has proved to 1 an admirable one in its conception and r suits. Hundreds of merchants and o then whose business calls them to and from ? eily along the line of the South Carolin Railroad, have availed themselves of th privilege afforded by these tickets, and ti city has been the gainer by these visitB. The character and advantages of thi Bystem, however, are not yet as generali known as they should be; and we invit our exchanges throughout the State to as sist in giving the widest publicity to matter which so directly interests ever, business man in South Carolina. The Plot Against the President. The New York Herald has unearthes some facts which throw a flood of light upoi the origin and motives of the effort whicl the Radicals are now making to displac? the President of the United States. I seems that the scheme was conceived fullj three years ago, as a measure of persona and private revenge, and has been steadily though more or less covertly, urged v^ei since. The story runs thus : When Presi dent LINCOLN was assassinated and ANDRE? JOHNSON succeeded to the Chief Magistracy, B. F. BUTLER, whose military fame was at that time none of the brightest, sought tc retrieve his tarnished reputation by civic triumphs, r.nd set longing eyes upon the Departments of State and War, either ol which he was modestly conscious of his pre? eminent fitness to administer. Some ides of the machinery he set in motion to gratify his ambition may be formed by reading the following letter, written to Hon. LEWIS D. CAMPBELL, our late Minister to Mexico, by General J. K. HERBERT, of Major Gene? ral BUTLER'S staff : WASHINGTON, April 19,18C5. Mu Dear Sir-The srreitesl crime of centu? ries has thrown the robe of Mr. Lincoln upon your good friend, Mr. Johnson, about whom we slightly differed when I was at your house. You will agree with nie, I think, that some change in tho Cabinet ought to bo made, and probably will be. You also agree, I suspect, that Butler for any placa, especially War or State, is about the* best man in the country. Presuming these things, I UTI te to ask that you make the best demonstration you can to that effect. You can write Mr. Johnson a letter that would boofereat weight with him. You can induce other good men to do tho 6ame; and, perhaps, after setting the ball in motion ai home, you could come here in person. I wiall you would. I am certain you would do a public service, and greatly oblige Butler and hi J fi tends. I am conti lent I shall hear from you in a substantial effort. This mild suggestion of the disinterested staff officer, it must be remembered, was made while Mr. SEWARD, the Secretary of State, lay prostrate and speechless from the blows of the assassin PAYNE, and while the corpse of the murdered President was yet unburied. Mr. CAMPBELL, to whom the letter was addressed, a personal and political friend of Mr. JOHNSON, was natu? rally disgusted at the unseemly haste ex? hibited by BUTLER and his friends, and, in steal of becoming a party to their schemes, sought au interview with thc newly-install? ed President, and frankly informed him of the aspirations of the hero of the spoons. Mr. JOHNSON quietly bul firmly announce?." his intention to make no Cabinet changes at that time, to oblige BUTLER or any one else. Senator SUM NEE, also, about the same time, endeavored to induce President JOHN? SON to adopt the universal negro suffrage policy: but his overtures met a signal re? pulse. Disappointed and mortified, SUMNEB and BUTLER struck hands against Mr. JOHNSON, and, from that time to this, have never ceased to plot his downfall. EiiglLh Politics. The foreign mails, giving accounts of the great debate on the Irish Church ques? tion, have been received down to the time of the defeat of thc British Ministry. On April Od, in the House of Commons, the vote was taken on Mr. GLADSTONE'S resolu? tions for the disendowment of the Irish Church, and they were carried, 82S to '272. The vote is regarded as decisive of the mat? ter, and all the LoDdon press consider the Church as doomed. The - British Ministry, I however, have not yet decided whether or I not to resign on this vote of disapprobation of their policy, and since April od the British Parliament has done very little of importance. {Pants.
