Ended in Smote-. Impeachment is dead, and Mr. ASHLEY, as chief mourner, sits in sackcloth and ashes, la? menting tbat aftor all his labor the muss be brought forth should have been so utterly ri? diculous. Tn re are few more signal instances iu history of '-great cry and little wool." The grim committee sat for months, studing for ..persons and papers," and accumulating a mass of testimony covering tweuty-aoven hun? dred and sixty nine pages. Surely, thought ASHLEY, LOGAS aud Beit BCTLEB, thia would be proof enough, to oust tho "aaa at the other end of the Avenue." The evidenco was laid before Coagross. Our readers have seen its leading puiuts. The tes? timony of Gcueral GRANT, Judge BLACK, and Mr. SEWARS was clear in its consistent vindi? cation of the President ; but the impeachers were deaf to the voice of reason ; and ia a ro port as intemperate in its terms as it was un? warrantable in its conclusions, they recom? mended the arraigumcat of tho Chief Magis? trate. Tile farce is now played out. Tho curtain has fallen, and impeachment is * effectually squelched. The % He of one hundred and eight to fifty-seven, agaiost the resolution of im? peachment, was of unmistakeable import ; and by tho usual device known to parliamentary law, the door has been forever closed to any revival of tho mad project. Two Cheering taigas. Tho telegraph anuouueos simultaneously a decided risc in cotton aud a steady fall ia gold Tbeso two facts afford good ground for tho bo? licf that ?he turning poiat in the long lane of adversity, which tho Southern people have BO patiently 'rod, is near at hand, if indeed it be not already reached. Tho stiffoniug of the staple iu Liverpool is the herald of a revival of business and a renewal of confidence through? out these Southern States. Not only will thc groat planting interest, now prosl-ate and dis? heartened, experience immediate relief, but all the branohes of trade, the prosperity of which, hinges, moro or less directly, upon the produc? tion and price of co:ten, will feel the same invigorating influence. Tho decline of gold means that wo shall be able to buy at a cheaper rate everyihing that wc eat and wear and use. These may not be welcome tidings to thc hold? ers of large stocks of goods; but consumers, who form thc vast mnjori'y of our people, will rejoico at tho news. The days of bitterest trial for the Souih, we trust, are over; and, cheered by the signs of a speedy and favorable reaction i i trade, and of the, to us, scarcely less itnportnut political reaction which has set ia at the North, wo cia brace ourselves for the work of 186S, aa i prepare with fresh courage and determination to carve out for this South? ern oouatry a worthy desi ?Dy. General co-op ti cition. The priaciplc of co-operatioa may be applied to every department cf manufacturing in? dustry and beaevolcnt organisation, as well and as profitably as to an ordinary retail store. In New York there is a co-operativo print? ing house, which begaa with six working mem? bers, and now employs twenty-ave. In Troy, New York, there ?B a stove foundry, on the same system, and in Rochester there is the Equitable Co-operative Foundry, which has turned out seventy-nine tous of stove casting in one month. There are, also, in New York City several co-operative building associations which are rapidly becoming wealthy. England has the co-operative principle in nearly every possible variety. Thero are co? operative societies for the tale of dry goods, boots, shoes; cloven flour mills; a wire fao tory, a shuttle factory, and a cotton factory. In additioo to these, there are hundreds of eo oieties for aiding tho members when sick, known as Friendly and Benefit Societies. Thc entire friendly societies of Great Britain pos? sess a reserve fund of $1-10.000, OOO; and their annual income cannot be !e.-s than $30,000,000. Tue two largest benevolent orders, the Odd Fellows aud Foresters, have securely invested more than 825,000,000. Tho Building and Freehold Land Societies ure another mode, and a very beaeficial one, in which the savings of the iudustrial classes become coined imo valu ible property. Like tho co operativo stores, capital US', d by these organizations brings back its profit to those dirccily interested, und does not go to ewell the coffers of those who oppose every step forward taken by the working mus? ses. These are faots and figures cuough to ?how what can be done by prorer co-operation. It is the old fable of the bundle of etioks. White the laboring ciassos act as individ?ala they have no power, but, when they unite for legiti? mate purposes, they eau wield a power to which that of ordiuary capitalists must bow. By tho co operative principio tba honest and hard? working mau can pr?vido for his family, pro 'ide for his support in case of sickness, and provide, at a little over cost, for all tbs wants and necessities of lifo. If his society or store does make a profit out of the Btaa'.l difference betweea actual cost and belling price, thc profit of the store or society is no less to him. It goe6 to increase capital, and ia that capital ho has aa interest and proprietary share. The time is at hand wheu the experiment moy bo tried in this State, cad the advantage of co? operation are so great and certain, thut agita? tion shall not cease until more than ouo co? operativo society is iu aciual operation. A Uook-bu j lu? Potpie. The Round Table, in a recent article, notices a fact which most of us have remarked, though we may have differed as lo tho cause. We mean thc peculiar and almost universal ten? dency among pCOple in this country to buy bouks whtoh they know they canot under? stand. The Rouud Table seems t a loss whe? ther to at tri hu, e this queer national cbaracl eris? tic to thc diffusion oj education or to the spread of democratic principles. Woks like those of JOHN- STUART MILL, HEBBEHT SPENCER, CAR? LYLE, BUCKLE, and even COMTE, or? constantly fouud in families, whose F-gliah counterparts in means, pursuits aud Intelligence, would never dream of purchasing such authors. Thc true re.ison of this is that iu America the Pro? portion ol' those who aspiro to a reputation for .'a little leurniag," out of the whole number of persons v*ho eau read und vrrite, is far greater than elsewhere. Given "the three R's"-read? ing, 'riling and 'rithmetic-and every man, with us, is as ??oed as every o-her mau. He reads the newspapers and sees the acmes of tacse great writers alluded to ia terms of com? mendation as the lerdera of coutemporaneous thought. Familiarized with their names, he talks about them aud finally buys their works. Here, howtve:-, his enthusiasm stops. Hu eel dota read- them ; and, whee he does, he aever penetrates beyond tho first few pages, which genoruly furnish him with eauugh material tor after-dinner paiicsonhical disquisitious, to last Lim a Ufadme. Ho is satisfied with that kind of respectability which the possession of I a library is supposed io give ; he feels that ho is entitled to "talk books" with thc best of bia neighbors;-and, as brains cud greenbacks, tor some iascrarabl? reason, seldom go to? gether, it is, perhaps, as well tim the r.oesee sor of e:ich should sect that which he hicks, that the mau of gold should pino l'or books, aud that the man of books should thirst for money. It is a fair exchange, aud in accord? ance with the all-pervading law of compensa? tion. SOUTOEUN COTTON is slowly hut surely rc gaiuiag its uscendeuey iu tho British market. Wo seo by th? latest statistic* that thc supply of American cottou iu England this year, has been five per cent, beyond that of last year, whicl the quantity from India has experienced a reduction of twenty-nine per coat.
