OD reading the extract yesterday, we were surprised to find in it tho following sentence : "The moral degradation of this people, who composed the rank and file of the rebel army dur? ing the war, was truly appaUing." This is an interpolation, forming no part of Mr. SHABBOOK'S article, as published in the "Galaxy." This explanation is duo to the author, and we take pleasure in making it. THB MOBTUABT REPOBTS.-By the last Bill ot Mortality published, it will be seen that only thir? ty-three deaths have occurred daring the past week. Of these nearly one-half wore children un? der five years of ago, and the remainder being adults. These Bills are published officially, and as each death that occurs is at once reported to the City Registrar there can be no mistake. Our city has never enjoyed better health, and with the approach of Winter even the trifling diseases that are incidental to a warm clima '.o will disappear. Th? disciples of Esoulapius have the prospect of a dull season before them, and unless somo method is adopted to secure custom, their occupation will be gone. Under these circumstances it might bo found advantageous to both physician and pa tient to adopt the plan so successful in Java, by wbieh an annuity is paid to koep people in health, .alls being frequently mado to see if "all's well, " and any irregularity, however slight, is thus sea? sonably eared for. We would advise a trial of tho experiment, for if the present healthy status of the city continues, even tho "Sing of Pain" will find that he is at a discount, and the universal ory will be "throw physio to the dogs, Fll have none of it." Gan ETD of all of Pains by Koto OF PAIN. Uns A MAJOB.-The monotony of the business life was broken yesterday by tho appearance of a stranger on Meetiug street; but notwithstanding their anxioty to secure customers, even the irre? pressible drummers stood aloof, and gave tho new comer a wide berth. There are fow persons who have not heard of Coffee, the pet bear of Messrs. BADENHOF & Co.'s Restaurant. Ito was brought from the mountains of tho -Vest to the seaboard, and, siDco his domestication in this city, has lived high and grown fat. It was determined to have Brain weighed, and he was carried to the Express Office, accompanied by a number of persons who wished to see the performance. Cunee was not disposed to walk a chalk Une, and his deviations from the path of rectitude caused somo scattering among his followers. On roaching tho office, ho took a decided dislike to the scales, and it was with great difficulty that he was induced to ta..c a stand on the platform. His uneasiness prevented any accurate weight being taken, but it was ascer? tained that it was something over two hundred pounds. While in the office he made frequent sorties toward tho spectators, but he was unable to accommodate any with a friendly hug, all keep? ing at a respectful distance. DWTBICT CO?BT, HON. GEO. W. JOHN A WAOEXEB, is an old hand at tho holm, and if the first number is a fair spocimen of | the Zeitung, our German friends, we feel assured, will not ouly have a high national representativo, but will also, at all time*, offer it a hearty wolcomo at their homos aud at their firesides. THE LIGHTS OK THE STREET CARS.-Tho Street Railway Company have at last perfected a chango in tho lights on tho King street lino, by which they aro now easily chstlnguishcd. Tho light first in uso assimilated too closely to the street lamps, aud a ohange was necessary in order to lot tho public di80rimiuate. A blue light waa first tried, but tho experiment proved unsuocossful, as it was of an inviaible shade that could not bo recognized from the darkness, and groen was substituted. This last change has provod satisfactory, and thc King street cars havo now a verdant appearance that is visiblo even on tho darkest night. AUCTION SALE.-Messrs. MCKAY & CAMPBELL will to-dav ofi'or to tho public a choico lot of smoked bacon sides, shoulders, trimmings, Ac. sud whiskey and wines. Thoy will also offor the stock of a oomtry store, whioh comprises a little of everything under tho san. Thcso gooda arc sold without any roservo, aud should command tho attention of city merchants. In addition to tho other articles a superior seven-octavo piano and gold and silver watchos will bo sold. Messrs. MCKAY & CAMPBELL havo endeavored to give some variety to their sales, and the publio have seldom any cause to complain. Their sales room is large, and the arrangements for the ac? commodation of their customers ample, and wo adviao all who wish to test its capacity to bo on hand to-day and they will not regret it. RECONSTBUCTION UNDER THE MILITARY BILL. A recent visit to the Citadel and a glanco at the improvements now in progress, presented tho mili? tary bill in its most favorablo light. Reconstruc? tion is there reduced to a scionco, and divested of ? all the theories that have addled Congressional brains. The military authorities havo made a practioal illustration of the advantages to bo de? rived from the bill, and havo already improved the appearance of the Citadel and grounds. The fonce onolosing tho green has been whitewashed, and the same color applied to the buildings. This is a groat improvement on their old weather-stained and rusty color, and when tho work of demolition and reconstruction is completed, the Citadel will be one of the ornamonts of the city. On the King street side this ohange will be more perceptible, as, with the exception of the old Guard House, tho buildings are now being torn down, and the green extended to the sidewalk. If tho same operation could bo performed on the opposite side of tho street, and the houses that now lino that block bo removed, tho Orphan Houso onclosuro would bo considerably enlarged, and that portion of King street become a moro fashionable locality. INQUEST.-Coroner WHITING oonclnded an in? quest held upon the body of Captain JOSEPH AL? PHONSE, who died suddenly Tuesday morning, just after leaving his residence on St. Philip street for his boat, lying at Union Wharf. Tho foUowing is the report of the post mortem examination mado by Dr. MICHEL: Tho autopsio examination revealed the follow? ing appearances: On opening the chest, a Borons tiuid escaped, as though the death was from dropsy of this cavity, but it was found that tho fluid originated in the areolar tissue of the medi? astinum. Tho lungs were healthy. The peri? cardium, or membrane! around the heart, was repletely distended by coagulated blood, instead of being entirely ompty of any fluid, as is normal. When the clotted blood was removed, the heart appear xl natural in form, size and position, but at its base was a o rosiderablo enlargement, form? ed by the arch of the aorta. This provod to be an aneurism of this great blood vessel, just beyond the point at which it springs from tho heart. It WBB now evident that the blood, tilling the pericar? dia! sac, must have escaped from rupture of the aneurism, and the point at which this rupture oc? curred, was discovered on the right Bide, and most dependent part of the tumor, near the pendulous portion of the auricle. Calcareous depositions ex? isted in the mitral valve. The left ventricle was somewhat hypertrophied, but not dilated. From these facts Dr. MICHEL deposed that tho deceased casie to hi? death from "rupture of an aneurism of the arch of the aorta, caused by dis? ease of tire walis of the artery, and obstruction to the circulation from valvular deposits." The Jury rendered a verdict in accordance with the above statement. JUDGE ALDRICH.-A correspondent from Black ville, October 22, writes to us as foll?os : "Jndge ALDRICH waB on Monday 8U8pondcd by or dor of General CANBT. In announcing from tho i ?
