The beautiful Verses we printed yesterday in our -Poet's Corner, by Major O HARA, a friend informs us, should have been headed "Kentucky's Dead." They were writ? ten on the c cession of the removal of the remains of the Kentucky Volunteers, who fell at the battle of Buena Vista in the war with Mexico. OUR unshaven friends, and those who do not agree with the wise man. in I (linking gray hair honorable, 6hould visit the Tonsorial establish? ment of Signor JAMES LOMBARDO, No. 114 .Market street, where they will find a first class frisem, who understands his art thoroughly, aud will fix their heads and frontispiece m the latest Pans style. -o THE NEW JURIES.-By dint of active exertion, says the Columbia Chronicle, the Clerk and Sheriff | of the Court of Common Pleas, have succeeded, through ike courtesy of the Chairman of the Board of Registration, in completing the new jury lists, and industrious constables are busy in serv? ing invitations on the elected, with the prospect of having the requisite number ot' jurors sum? moned by Thursday morning. Three colored men ara among the happy number. ST. PETER'S CHURCH COLUMBIA.-The Phouix ot yesterday says : Among the many improve? ments going on in our city, we must not omit to mention that now being effected in the house of worship ol om- Catholic fellow citizens. The ex? terior is being renewed in appearance, by a coat in imitation of dark-browu sand-atone ; the inte? rior has buen thoroughly repaired, and the tower? ing cross ?.nd the gilt inscriptions renewed by re gliding and rebrouzing. Thia structure was founded iu 13*24, and since then the increas> ot the congregation necessita? ted its room extension. It escaped destruction on the memorable night of the 17th Et-binary. 1865, by becoming the refuge of the Sisters of Mercy, who had retired there after the destruction of their own institution, on Main street - to winch may be added the noble conduct of some Federal soldiers, who kept ard we understand, at the main entrance. The present improvements are being carried on under the supervision of Mr. JAMES A. DKARMAN, contractor. The present pastor, the Kev. Dr. J. J. O'CONNELL, has labored for many >ears in this church, and with complete sneees?. The congre? gation is large and increasing. -o-. THE FUNERAL OK HENRY TIMROD.-From the Chronicle of yesterday, we have the followiug ac? count of tho obsequie^ of Mr. TIMROU : ' This sad event took place yesterday afternoon, at the Trin? ity Church, and called together a large number of the friends and relatives of the lamented poet. The services were performed by Rev. C. BRUCE WAEHEB, Rev. Mr. SHAND being also present, but nuable to participate in them by reason of an in? disposition, which for several days has confined him at home. "The pall-bearers were General WADE HAMPTON, Professor A. N. TALLE?, M.D., ROBERT W. GIBBES, M.D., Professor HUGH THOMPSON, WM. H. TAL LET, Esq., F. G. DEFONTAEST, MELVIN M. COHEN. and JAMES'S. SIMMONS. 'The coffin lid has closed, the grive ?s Ulled, and the pale face of HENRI TIMKOD is shut out forever from the gaze of those wno loved him well. He sleeps the sleep that knows no waking, in that narrow mansion, using hi', own beautiful language : "Where gloom and gladuess-grase and garden- mixed. Make it a place to love and not to tear." "Heaven! shed thy most propitious dews around ' Yt holy atara! look down M nh tender eyes. And gild, and guard, and cousechrte the ground Where we shall rest, sud whence we pray to rise." "We cannot close this notice without quoting the sad lines written by "HARRY" (as we all used to know him), several years ago. but prophetically descriptive of the fiual hour that witnessed the going out of the brilliant light ; "Somewhere ou this earthly planet. In the dust ol flower ? to be. In the dew-drop, in the ?.mshin-. Sleep* a solemn day for me. "At this wakenii hour ot midnight I behold lt dawn iu mist. And I hear a sound of sobbing Through the darkness-hist ! oh. hist ' "In a dim and musky chambei. I am breathing life away; Some one draws a curtain soi t ly, And I watch the broadening day. , "As ii purples iu the zenith. As lt brightens cn the lawn ; There's a hush of death about me, And a whisper. 'He is gone !' " ' "DWELL LN THE LAND, AND VERIL? THOU SHALT BS FED.'*-About two months ago we a?w several gentlemen from the Northeastern part of this State in this city, en route for Texas, whither they were going to spy out the fatness of the land. We en? deavored to show them theimpohcy of such a step, and exhausted the entire stock ct argument against emigration. In vain. For every Teason wo advanced in favor of staying our friends could show two why they ought to go. They went ; all of them, however, returned, and yesterday we had tiie pleasure of seeing one of them agaiu on his way home from the distant West, entirely, radically cured ot the Texas fever. They had mans inducements to remain, purchase land and sertie, but weighing the odds ot moving, transplanting- old trees, going into a hotter and an insalubrious climate and voluntari? ly depriving thenisei,. s of all the comforts and privUeges of eivilired society, schools, churches, friends, neighbors kinsfolk c-tc. etc.- against the advantages of ??ood land and brisk "business, weighing also negro supremacy aud greenbacks here, against gold and a huge white majority there-the balance still largely preponderated .i. favor of old South Carolina. The accounts they give of theooootn are not very encouraging. Tho cotton crop in Alabama is the best they saw anywhere .;, theil route As they went l'urthei West the-, found increased tracea of the ravages ol the anny and bod worm. In some sections tnese pl: s JCS have ul most destroyed the caine . top, in others about half a crop will bf made. In Texas they reporl considerable activity m business, notwithstanding the great li.-at, and the malarious fevers of different lypee everywhere prevalent. Greenbacks an- -catc h known in that unreconstructed State, except to pay taxes with. All moneyed transactions are in bard cash, gold or silver. Politically, also, according to our "pros? pecting" friends, the people are much mon- hope? ful than ourselves. We commend the experience t-r these temporary emigrants to others afflicted with Texas or Flori? da fever. We advise them to ponder well before they move. Its great strength on account of being double-geared, which not only doubles the strength by dividing the strain on twice tho number of teeth, but by gearing on both sides of tho wheels lt equalizes the wear on the shafts, and materially lessens the friction, enabling the horses to do much more work than with any other Power. 2. Its compactness and extreme portability, lt weighing about .m.- bah as much RS other Horse Powers, and occu? pying but uni- third the space, it can be packed lu smalt ?oxes, thus saving much expense. It is so simple that, the most ignorant person would have no difficulty in puttlug it together. 3. The facility with which it can bc adjusted to any kind of inachim ry at anv angle, either on the ground or over head, without moving it from its foundation, will be appreciated by farmersaud plutiters as specially adapt? ed for driviug Cotton Oun<.
