PETER'S CHURCH COLUMBIA.-The Phouix ot yesterday says : Among the many improve? ments going on in our city, we must not omit to mention that now being effected in the house of worship ol om- Catholic fellow citizens. The ex? terior is being renewed in appearance, by a coat in imitation of dark-browu sand-atone ; the inte? rior has buen thoroughly repaired, and the tower? ing cross ?.nd the gilt inscriptions renewed by re gliding and rebrouzing. Thia structure was founded iu 13*24, and since then the increas> ot the congregation necessita? ted its room extension. It escaped destruction on the memorable night of the 17th Et-binary. 1865, by becoming the refuge of the Sisters of Mercy, who had retired there after the destruction of their own institution, on Main street - to winch may be added the noble conduct of some Federal soldiers, who kept ard we understand, at the main entrance. The present improvements are being carried on under the supervision of Mr. JAMES A. DKARMAN, contractor. The present pastor, the Kev. Dr. J. J. O'CONNELL, has labored for many >ears in this church, and with complete sneees?. The congre? gation is large and increasing. -o-. THOU SHALT BS FED.'*-About two months ago we a?w several gentlemen from the Northeastern part of this State in this city, en route for Texas, whither they were going to spy out the fatness of the land. We en? deavored to show them theimpohcy of such a step, and exhausted the entire stock ct argument against emigration. In vain. For every Teason wo advanced in favor of staying our friends could show two why they ought to go. They went ; all of them, however, returned, and yesterday we had tiie pleasure of seeing one of them agaiu on his way home from the distant West, entirely, radically cured ot the Texas fever. The accounts they give of theooootn are not very encouraging.
