THE CALDER HOUSE.-This popular hotel, at the corner of Church and Queen streets, has been leased by" Madame G i DIE BE , ta vor ably k no w n as the former hostess of the Carolina House, and is now opened to the public. The Calder House or the Planters' Hotel, was at one timo a great favorite with the traveling public, particularly with the planters of the coast, from which circumstance it probably gained tho latter name. Madame GEDIEHE has established a reputation as an experienced landlady, and finding that tho Carolina House was too contracted to accommodate her friends, wisely determined to make the present change. There is nothing, perhaps, that contributes more to the lively appearance o? a city- than its hotels, and ander the new regime the Calder House bids fair to become again one of the popular caravan? saries of the city, which show by their crowdod | haQs that Chai leeton is the queen city of tho | South. A NAEBOW ESCAPE.-A lady who Uvea, a few milda from the city has furnished us with an account of the narrow escape of her grand? son from death on the railroad. Tho lady and her grandson, a boy about twelve years of ago, had walked twelve miles to obtain oom, but were una? ble to secure it, and the little fellow returned homo. Herbad walked about five miles, when, overcome by <'esp and hanger, ha sat down on the track and fall asleep. Fortunately, * adored man carno along' the rbed and woke him aa tho down train was in ekrhr, or ne 'would have been crashed to death. Ho did not know when ho had fallen asleep, .?ad - reached his heme after being absent twenty-four hoare. The practice of walking' on the railroad track is entirely-too common, and not? withstanding the numerous accidents that have occurred, there seems to be some attraction among! the oroea-tios that is almost irresistible. Expe? rience ia a severe teacher, but a little" caution would prevent the necessity of le arning-the lesson. i THE BEARDS' IRON TIE, which ia now consider? ed unequalled by any patent yet introducod, is sold by our neighbors Messrs. G. W. WILLIAMS & Coi,: factors, who are agents for our State. . .'.:.j^ j We havo examined chis very superior article; and find, on a close inspection, "hat it is undoubt? edly one bf tho most simple and convenient pat-' terns of any it has hitherto boen our pleasure to j eoe. The great advantage which recommends- it to the ase af our plan tere is the fast that, consisting of only one piece, it can be: easily handled, and can be adjusted in a motion, and also, owing to the number of stets, the bale can bo compressed in a Beat i.nd regular manner, and in" any size to suit the fancy of the packers. Mewnr. WILLIAMS ? Co., introduced this Tic last year, and from, the number, of tons they sold at that pori od, and the unbounded success tho articlo met with, thoy are enabled to recommend them highly to all in need bf such an article. : We would, therefore, call attention to this Tie, and would advise all to give them a trial, feeling assured that their views will bo met and tho pa? tent please. ]''"?' A PROOF or PROGRESSIVENESS.--Wo mentioned some months since that several young gentlemen of this city, who were oat of situations, had form- j ed an association for the purpose of mending cot- i ton bales. This employment has heretofore been I exclusively the province of the "nogroes, bat, under* the. existing, circumstances, that monopoly bas been destroyed, and tile business is open to all. : Lf ?he cotton, crop equals- the expectation oi -tho planter, the business of cotton-mending will" be? come quite profitable, for an experienced hand can sew up several bales during tho day, and as the pay is so much per halo, tho timo spent will not prove labor lost. Cotton-mending has always been' considered the lowest round of tho ladder, bat attention to tho boniness will soon enable the; mender to become acquainted with the different grades, and thia knowledge may be the ultimate cause of advancement to tho factor's office. - Mr. JOHN ROBINSON, of the firm of ROBINSON & Sow, has- associated with himself several young men of this city auder tho name of JOHN; ROBIN BON A Co., who design attending to the cotton [ mending and packing business. They havo open-; ed an office on Cordes street, and havo already! packed and shipped twolvo bales of Soa Islands. DA order to increase their facilities for this busi? ness, Mr. JNO. ROBINSON has procured a hand power press, which will bo under his exclusive; control, and will be used to balo and compress tho: loose cotton samples, ?tc., procured in tho busi-j ness. The members of tho firm aro all youngj Charlejstonians, and thetmanner -in -which Aeyj have thrown off the shaoklos of conventionalism j and gone resolutely to work will Boon bring thein? a reward. Our future is in tho hands of the rising genera-! tion, and if, as in the preaont instanco, thoy sliowl themselves superior to any petty prejudices, thoj star of prosperity will soon riso and alano upon} their efforts. Wegivo the now firm a cordial wei j pome to the, ?tnjmeroiaj ,<j&#?; &?d though thoy; re commenced at the "Toot of tho ladder, tho! e spirit that first induced the effort will causoj em to rise superior to any misfortune that may; them, * ?vra??icV wiru'ri! -The monthly meeting of tho Catholic Institute will take place thin evening, at 8 o'clock, in tho basement of St. Paul's Chnrch.
