Their work is warranted for six years. DB, NOTT, of New Orleans, after a lingering ill? ness of several days, died at the Exchange Hotel, Montgomery, Ala., on the 5th inst. This Dr. NOTT waa a brother of Dr. JOSIAH C. NOTT, of Mo? bile, and a son of the late Judge NOTT, of this State. RESPITE.-We leam that his Excellency Gov? ernor OBX has respited the prisoner John Jenkins (colored) until July 12th. Jenkins was found guilty of the murder of Mr. BRANDFORD at the January session of the Civil Court His counsel I appealed from this decision, but the sentence of I the Court was sustained, and Jenkins was con? demned to be hung ou the 14th of June. There waa little doubt of the guilt of Jenkins, and we j trust that there will be no mistaken clemency dis? played in bis case. HOMICIDE.-A difficulty having o<?corred som e days ago on John's Island, at Jenkin 'a plantation, between two colored men named Scipio Fraser and John Green, the latter attacked the former with a I large knife and stabbed bim in the side, the knife I A breaking and leaving the blade in the wound. I Fraser died after much suffering, and United States Detective MICHEL was sent over to arrest Green on Tuesday last, which he did, and has lodged him in jail. When the detective reached the island he found Green working in the field, and on approaching him he made a demonstration with bis hoe, which Mr. MICHEL soon settled by I. exhibiting a revolver, and he afterwards waa I brought along unresistingly. Green was formerly attached to' the Twenty-third Regiment Massachu- I, setts Volunteers. WHEAT I WHEAT!-We refer-our readers to an I advertisement from Messrs. The result of these explorations in the bosom nt the earth baa boen a rush of many I ' waters, and the dust is now effectually laid by the numerous streams that are played upon it at all hears sf the dey. I Broad Street seems tobe the favored locality for these aquatic sports, and the number of these Water spouts ie continually in creasing. The mer? chante along this thoroughfare have clubbed to- I ""'gather, andown the pumps m common, By this arreiujenrant the public good is consulted, and the entire street receives the sprinkling. On Tuesday night a grand movement was made which has eclipsed any previously attempted. A pipe was placed in the fire well near the corner of j Church and Broad streets, and another laid across 'Broad, with outlets at each corner, a force pump p y in the Library yard, worked by stalwart Ethiopians, furnishes the necessary water power, and by at >: teehing the hose to the different pipes, both Broad and Church streets cen be .sprinkled for a cons id erable distance. As it is .'a vain dream to expect that water will ever bo mtreduoed into tho city, we hail these in? novations with delight, and commend the action of the Broad street merchants, who have taken the matter in their own Lands, and have achieved s success that will cause their names to be grate? fully remembered by* the dusty public. It requires but a small outlay to place these pipes in position, ; and the good'results to be seen from their use in J ..? Broad street should' encourage the residents in I j - other sections to try the experiment. THE CROPS ALONO THE foAST.-The information received through our different exchanges, indi- j estes that the crops will be far larger and better than for many years. This is not confined to one c locality, but the good news comes from North, South, East and West. The planters and farmers j have learnt wisdom by sad experience, and the 1 crop of cereals in the Southern States is unusually 1 u pBPSMssg-earn and wheat having been made more of specialities than ever before. The wheat crop, in particular, is very forward, and shipments I, have already been made from different points; I ? These samples are entirely free from any defects, sod readily oommsnd the best market prices. < The sea island and coast plantations near the i y city have been worked with an energy that will re? pay the proprietors by an abundant harvest. At Edicto and the adjacent islands, large tracts have j been planted with the long staple cotton, and both '? the quantity and the quality will exceed the expec? tations of the planters. Tho present cool wet I : spell has retarded the growth of the cotton in a I measure, sa it was partly in the grass, and the 1 damp weather caused this to grow luxuriantly. Notwithstanding these slight drawbacks, the plant I haa grown ind prospered, the young bolls have been formed, and the farmer is cheered by a pro mise of a good stand. There is aehxonio disease arnon; some planters that causes them to underrate their crops, and to predict all manner of coming evil that will destroy whet has been planted. Those croakers would '- have the world believe that all the plagues of Egypt were about to visit them, and say, with a spirit of resignation, that they would bo satisfied with one-third of a crop. Fortunately this class is in the minority, and the necessity for personal exertion nae caused the mass to put more confi? dence in their own prowess, and to take a cheerful view of the future. M A?OB'S CODBT, June 12.-A drayman who was driving improperly in the street, and ran into a cart to ita injury, was tined $5. A young female who had affectionately thrown hor arms around the neck of a bottle and kissed its month too often, and who was exhibiting her love for it in language not often found in Cupid's voca? bulary, was made to pay $5 for her powerful ex? pressions. An individual who was quietly drunk, but who couldn't take care of himself, was only fined 13 for his board. MILITARY MOVEMENTS-The following officers and troops arrived in this city yesterday by the Emily B. Souder : Major BISSELL, Captain O. V. WEIR, Captain W. B. BECK, Major HEAD, Lieut ?. K. HILLS, Lient GRAHAM, Dr. WRIGHT, and 365 United States troops. These troops came from Fortress Monroe via New York, and are a portion of the command of Gen. BURTON. Brevet Brigadier-General H. S. BURTON, Colonel of the 5th U. 8. Heavy Artillery, who has been in command at Fortress Monroe for some time past, arrived in this city, by the land route, and is stop? ping at the Mills House. General BURTON is favorably known to the South as a gentleman and a soldier. He brings with him the good wishes of the Virginians ; and his generous treatment of a State prisoner will not soon be forgotten. We trust that the change in his command will not alter the friendly feelings now entertained for him by th 3 South. FIRE.-Bet ween two and three o'clock yesterday morning, the alarm of fire was sounded, and smoke was seen issuing from the premises occupied by Mr. S. WOOLF, in King street, between Liberty and Wentworth, rho flames pro? ceeded from a kitchen in the rear of the house, but the firemen were soon on the ground, and suc? ceeded in confining the damage to that building. Mr. WOOLF owned the property, and the house was insured in several Northern agencies, but there was no insurance on his stock. The kitchen had been occupied by some colored par? ties, who had been notified to leave by Mr. WOOL?, and it was supposed that the building was fired by them for revenge. As the gate of the yard was never closed, the access to the premises was easy, and it was thought that the late inmates had en? tered the kitchen and set fire to the second story. The promptness of the firemen prevented the flames from spreading, and the damage will hardly exceed a few hundred dol?ais. Lient. HENDRICKS and his force were present with their tarpaulins, but tho exertions of the firemen prevented their ase. TBS ST. HELENA.-This fine'steamer has been recently renovated and placed on the Mount Pleas? ant Ferry,line. The St. Helena will be better; kno-sn, pei haps, under her old name, the Edxeto, mid many persons remember the time when she was the favorite packet between this city and the Sea Islands. She is admirably arranged for this purpose, being supplied with bertha and accom? modations for freight and a number of passengers, [t is the intention of her owner, Capt H. L. P. MC? CORMICK, to resume the coast trips later in the season, when the planters are prepared to send their crops to market. The popularity of the old Echeto with the island planters will not be lost un? der a. change of name, for the old proverb holds good in ker case, and we predict for her owner successful trips and large freights. The steamer Rockland, of the Mount Pleasant Ferry, is now undergoing repaire, and will soon take her old place on the line, when the St. will be free to enter on new and more pron engagements. The inland planters have in variabl; consigned-their cotton to Charleston, and the ] ance of an. old friend will be another ind?ceme for them to continue thia good practice. TRIAL ox STEAM ENGINES,-A novel trial of the power and capacity of the steam engines took place last night at the coiner of Pine kn ey and Anson streets. The Phoenix was supplied7 by the Palmetto, the latter faming tho water through 800 feet of hose into the auction pipes of the Phoenix, which played off through fifty feet pf hose and a one and- one-eighth inch nozzle. A full s tr e am of water was sent to a distance of 240 feet, and the experiment was demonstrated to be a perfect Buc? ees. The greatest harmony prevailed during the playing; and the entente cordiale which exists in the Fire Department was strengthened by the friendly meeting between two rival engines. The Phoenix have considerably improved their hoao reel by the addition of two cog wheels, which e tablee the men to reel the hose with more ease than oxide* the oki plan. Before it waa a labor for eight men to reel the hose, but, by the addition of the cogwheels, it can be done by two men, one at each brake. The cogs were made at SMITH'S Foundery, at the foot of Hasel street, and their ase proves that Charleston mechanics are capable of inventing and perfecting improvements on the work of their Northern brethren. These wheels have proved to be such labor-saving improve? ments that we advise their adaption by the Fire Department, as much time that ia now wanted in reeling hose would be prevented.
