A CREAK Pmy.-Perhaps. the best antidote . the heat of the' summer'is the'cooing sound of a? a? There acre : persons who ara not- familiar with the sound ' I-scream, which ia fearfully trae when ottered & shrill female voice, and tile cooling panacea barely ad equate to tranquillize the excited nerv . It has long been the' study of the trade to pree their wares to the pobho without this shook their- nervo na system, .but few have succeed Foremost '.among, 'them, however,, stands ll ' name ' of Henry Larcombe, who now ; i nounces/to tho public that he is ag " prepared' to cater to their.- tastos, a bis wagon and Dells will "bo daily heard ineyi part of the city. But as the said travail) * do not gvmcraDy appreciate euch attention, it 1 comes a matter of some importance to ave Bharks and harpies along the route, and' this th . can mraally accomplish by. keeping an eye np j their own interests, and watching the "servants ~ tho pulibc." - We can go North- either by land or water.1 tike the doctors, we are accustomed to sea sic neat, and conclude to entrust ourselves to the tc era of the sea, we have etui a choice of three lim all offering ample accommodations. If, ont ?titer hand, wo prefer terra firma, there is i equal, if not greater, choice of routes. There A- thia, however, to be said in connection with i last-named alternative; that th? Tux FASHIONS FOB JUKE.-These are BO strang startling and striking, that we have been tempt? to devote a few lines to the subject, and to hold ti mirror np to nature, or in other words, to give tl fair sex an opportunity of seeing themselves i others see them. Having never been any farther in a millinei shop than the outside, and knowing but Utile < the paraphemaMa necessary to create a first-clat belle, oar criticisms will be somewhat original, i oar opinions are formed only from a casual obsc -ration of the ladies' magazines, and of the ange themselves. King street is decidedly the bei point for a eritio to visit, and a glance at the swe< . faces seen on that promenade would make tl mont inveterate bachelor sigh over his wretche lot, and he would forget milliners' bills and simils items in bis admiration. To describe the fair creatures is a difficult .taal as they wield a magician's wand and can mak themselves appear attractive in spite of the fashioi The imperious Queen, whoso, headquarters ai supposed to be at Paris, is despotic in her swa and changeable in her whims, rashing ofte from one extreme to another. Crinoline has no received its death blow, and in the place of fu skirts that once kept the beaux within hailing dia tance, we now see churn-like forms, the lates fashion being an approach to the style worn b oar foremothers. The wallang dresses are decidedly unique, an< are only sensible in one respect, that there i a small saving in thc cloth. They ore ugly imita tioei3Qfa Swiss peasant's dress, and afford a abundant opportunity for the display-of prett ?- ? gaiters. Bat these are designed only for the stree! the fall evening dress being precisely the reverse and having a trail extending from three to fi v feet from the point where the dress touches th: gonad, which proves very effectual in keeping od mirers at a distance. The bonnet hos degenerated so much in size and the hair hos risen in each abandonee aroam it, that to obtain a foll view of the curiosity it i necessary to be above it, or it is invisible. Of al the freaks of fashion, the wildest has been tho in ventio? of the modern bonnet, which bears no re semblance to those worn but a few years back They are of all shapes, from a soup plate and doo mat to a side saddle, and are, notwithstanding their diminutive size, the dearest things we eve saw. The latest thing in this Une is styled th "mermaid's joy," and consists of a straw c oncer] of the size and shape of a good oyster shell, allow ? lng a waterfall almost as high as Niagara to fal from behind, while Utile cascades wend their wa; nb mt the ears and neck in delightful confusion. It would be a herculean effort to continue th? .abject, as the powers of rhetoric would be exhaust ed before the task was completed; and we adviei all who wish to fill ap the hiatos to visit Kint street or the Battery, and they will find abundan ^ food for reflection. THE ILLUSIONIST.-Prof. H. J. SARGENT'S per? form axwe "Was attended lut night by an audience, "select thought few," who"were highly entertained by the clever tricks of legerdemain, at which Mr. S. appears quite an adept. We have had the pleas? ure of seeing eomo of the great masters of the black crt-Prof. ANDERSON, Signor BLITZ, and HESS ALEXANDER, but there is no comparison whatever between them and Prof. SAUGEST. All our friends who wish to attend a Soiree Magique, should go to the Hibernian Hall to-night MAJOR'S COURT-May 27.-A colored youth who loved liquor not wisely but too well, took an over? dose and seriously impaired his navigating powers. Ho was taken in charge by the police, and fined $3 by the Mayor. Richard Brown, who was so only in name as he rejoiced in a jet black skin, was lound in front of the Guard House, having mistaken the building for a vessel, and thought the pillars were masts. In order to keep up the delu jion he was consigned to the hold, and $3 worth of ballant removed from his pocket. An individual who became befogged in conse? quence of clouds on his brain, endeavored to re? lieve himself by an eye-opener, but found the effort futile and ran aground near a lamp-post. He was discovered and taken care of by the police, who, with their characteristic liberality, made him pay for the trouble. Two parties, residents of tho Upper Wards, wero charged with attempting to serve both God and mammon by selling liquor on the .Sabbath. This was forbidden in the decalogue, and they paid the penalty due to the offended law. A number of persons were remanded for exami? nation. Among them a colored youth who had the singularly euphonious name of "Poor Boy Happy." On enquiry, we learned that he came from Ashango laud, was related to the royal fami? ly, and had been captured for stealing pumps. OOCBT or COMMON PLEAS-Hon. Taos. W. GLOVER presiding.-Tho case of MODEBMOT US. ? DALLAS, for Breach of Contract, which had been assigned for this day, was taken up ; Messrs I Luana and DURYEA for the plaintiff, and Messrs. PHILLIPS and SETKOUB for the defendant A jury was organized, and the trial consumed the entire day, the jury not returning till a late hour. U. 8. DISTRICT COTJBT.-Hon. GEO. S. BEVAN, Presiding. The Court met at the usual hour, but adjourned to two P. M., when the case of the United States vs. JAHPEB GBIFJTN for passing and uttering United States Treasury notes and frac? tional currency, was taken np. H. G. YOUNG, Esq., appeared for the defenoe. A number of challenges were made and the jury being formed, the witnesses were examined with the exception of one for the defence, who dil not appear, and on motion of Mr. Youno, the further consideration of the case was postponed to nine and a half a. m. to-day. The case of B. MCBRIDE for the same of? fence will be heard at ll a. m. In admiralty, DANIEL J. STUBOXS VS. the Bteam I em Morgan and Charleston-Libel for supplies ! furnished, Ac. A. GETTY & Go. vs. G. D. LUST and B. J. GETTY, Libel. On motion of BBBWBTSB and SFBATT it was order? ed th.it the Bteamer be Bold, and the pro coeds after payment of costs be held by the Marshal, subject to the further order of the court. It was farther ordered that the said salea be on the following terms : One-third cash and balance on personal security wi th,mortgage of vessel, or such other terms as shall be approved by the counsel on the cause. This with the consent of POBTEB & COKKEB contra. In the above cases the pleas to the jurisdiction were overuled, and respondent ouster ordered. MEDICAL COLLEGE OF SOOTH CAROLINA.- In our advertising columns of this day will be found the "Notice" of the Board of Trustees of the Medical College of the State of South Caxohxia, who inform the professional public, through this medium, that on Monday, the 24th June, they will proceed to elect a Professor of Physiology and a Professor of Obstetrics to fill vacancies occasioned by the resignation of Professors JAMES MOULTRIE and T. G. PRIOLEAU from the said institution. We regret to see these time-honored names, associated in our minds with the very founding of the above institution, erased from the list of Professors. They have been well tried servants of a fastidious public, and to their untiring industry and perse? verance the College ia indebted for the high stand it has taken among the institutions of learning in ' the United Stat UH. Among the earliest founded, it has passed through a long se? ries of successful struggles, and now is ac? knowledged as second to none in the high tone of its faculty, in ito. associated array of talent, and in its usefulness. Up to the commencement of the war its class?s averaged annually considerably over two hundred students; and aa the Diploma of the College is highly valued throughout the Sooth and West, this institution has-always had-an unu? sually . large per con tage of ad van oed students ap? plying for graduation. It is to'th ea o retiring gen? tlemen that much of this success is due, and they may justly look with pride opon their creation, j Having accomplished a good work, they have now determined to leave the institution to younger and more active hands, to carry on what they have so ably established.
