Every day the in? terest increases, a very large number of persons having joined the church, and every afternoon and night a ere number are earnestly seeking the salvation of their souls around the altar of God. Prayer meeting every afternoon at 5 o'clock, and preaching at 8 o'clock every evening. We are re? quested to state that the public aro earnestly in? cited to attend, and participate and aid in tho above services, as God is graciously reviving his people, and the good work will soon embrace every church and congregation in the city. ST. JOHN'S CHAPEL, HAMPSTEAD.-This is thc only church, in the northwestern portion of the city, and has been for a number of years attended byi the residents in Hampstead. The Rev. ALEX? ANDER W. MARSHALL, tho pastor of this church, appeals to the charitable public for assistance in making the necessary repairs This church is a wooden structure, and the long years of service have at length told upon it, tho roof bocominp leaky, and repairs being necessary in various parts of tho building. It is estimated that this will cost about $1400, and as the congregation are impoverished by the war, and unable to miso thc sum, they have appealed to tho generosity of the public. A list will he found at our office, and all who feel desirous pi g ving their mite to tho cause will have an opportunity to contributo. St. John's Chapel was largely attended during tbe shelling of tho city, and the recollections of that period should cause many who then worshipped in that sanctuary to aid in restoring it to HB former use? fulness. DxPBjcaiATIOX or Crrr CUSBENCT.-There are few,piersons resident in the city who have not been annoyed by tho refusal of some parties to receive the city money except at a heavy discount. HUB money was issued by the'eity as certificates of in debt?dnes? for which the corporation held them' Belvos responsible, and it was only af; or a long de bTxiratiori that it Wai decided by Co u L eil to adopt this plan rather than burden the citizens with heavier taxes. It was to relieve the citizens, but especially the defaulting taxpayers, that tho bills were struck' off, and it was expected that they would bo favorably received by the commuai Ly, as the money was returnable at par to the city. At first this proved to be the case, or the depreciation was so slight as not to affect the treasury,but it ap? peared to be too good an opportunity to make money out of tho necessities of others, and the bills were bought up by parties at a largo discount, and returned t o the city at par. This depreciation is peculiarly severe upon the city officials as-they.are- all of them-paid in this money, antHhey must 'either submit to tho extor? tion of the Shylooks or wait until the treasury can redeem their bills. It would have .been an easy matter for tho citizens to ha^-o acted in concert and taken the monoy at its par value, hut they Beena to have forgotten every consideration hut self agrandizement; tho past has left no whole? some lessons, and as long aa they rise they care little who infiere. The city has acted her part well if not wisely, for rather than sue tho tax-payors she granted them time to recuperate, and, hko in? grates, they Lave stung the hand that preserved their property. Paper money can never be con? sidered at the same value as gold, but tho City ot Charleston has never failed to return har bonds, and before the war City 6 percents, wereconsid ered.au excellent investment. Tho war has im? poverished corporations as well as individuals and it ia a difficult matter in the prosent emergency for Council to meet the necessary expenditures and make both ends meet. Repairs uro necessary in every part of tho city, but if the finances are ham? pered they will never bc commenced and our fu? ture prosperity bc but a dream. It was on old adage that corporations had no souls, but it will become a truism if their pockets aro emptied, for then they will be coi polled to turn a deaf ear on all complaints and only do what is absolutely ne? cessary to keep the wheels in motion. If the citizens do not provo equal to tho emer? gency, and show by their countouanco and works that they have faith in thc city money, they will eventually be the greatest sufferers. A few, but unfortunately a very few, continue to receive tho bills at par; but when the depreciation is eo gen oral, -and done, too, Ly 6ome who wert- the origina? tors of the plan, their action can bo commended, but not followed. We appeal to all who havo the welfare of the city at heart, and desire to seo her take her former position in the world, to assist her now in the hour ot need. A concerted action would accomplish wonders, for confidenco would be restored, the city would bo relieved, and, above all, there would be the consciousness that they had done their duty. DEATH OF AN OLD ChARLSsroNiAN.-The Carolina Spartan brinda the sad intelligence of the death of a former resident of this city. Mrs. CATHERINE LOUISA OELAND died at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Dr. VERNON, in the town of Spar tanburg, on the 5th ultimo, aged eighty years, four months and one day. Mrs. OELAND was a native of the City of Charles? ton, and her maiden nanio was CUBE. She iras married first to Mr. WILLIAM FABER, and then to Mr. JOHN OELAND. In early lifo sho claimed her plate in tho Lutheran Church, but in after years, when separated from carly associations by her re? moval to Spartanbuig District, she became a member .?f the Methodist Church, and was indeed a mother in Israel. Her disoaso was dropsy of the chost, accompanied by .other symptoms usually attondant upi>n old age. The timo had arrived when "the weary whools of Ufe should stand still," and "tho silver cord bo loosed," and she was ready to say, "Now Lord lettest thou thy servant depart in peace." STOLEN PUMPS. -There are a certain class of tbeivei now i i the city who, like the bummers of old, confino their operations to particular articles and scorn to plunder generally. They have lately taken a fancy to tho plumber's business, and con liscato every copper pump they can reach. These are easily disposed of, and it is a hard matter to identify tho property. Many of these pumps have bcou recovered by the dotecUvcs, but they have been Unable, in every instance, to resloro them to tho owners on this amount. If each person was to put some mark or brand upon his pump he would be ablo, in case of theft, to trace it with ease, and indeed it is the par^ of wisdom to make this distinction, for scarcely a day passes without some house being despoiled. We make the sug? gestion at the request of the officers, aa it would enable them to trace tho stolen pump with cer? tainty, and would be the means of convicting the thief. Lo! THE POOE FREEDMAN. -With a certain class among the freedmen summer is the halcyon pe? riod. Work is then unnecessary, for the earth supports her children, and the sale of the fruits that grow wild at this season is sufficient to sus? tain Ufe, and that is their highest aspiration. The cry "blackberry" is familiar to the'ear, and is now heard m every part of the city. It is varied by the different venders, who tax their ingenuity to in? vent some wild yell that will alarm the citizens and cause them to purchase if o.dy to preserve the peace. We were recently struck with a new appoal ut? tered by an old knock-kneed and dilapidated freed? man. He was evidently a plantation hand and green at the business; his basket was full, con? taining perhaps his ent re stock in trade, and tho sun was approaching its zenith. He sent forth his gu tte ral cry of "blackberry" at intervals, but fading to obtain custom he hasitated, but sudden? ly a bright idea struck him, and he added to his usual invocation: "Ob, I want some money so badi" This plaintive appeal was not long unan? swered and before he passed out of sieht he was bailed, his basket lightened and the coveted green? backs in his possession. Whether he continued his sales wo know not, but left the spot wishing that some of the philanthropic travelling oratora had been present, and they would have obtained a text for a discourse on the pleasures of emancipa? tion. MAXOE'S COURT, May '23.-Two men, white and colored, who had had a scrimmage in the Market, about the purchase of some fowls, in which a very sick one had been passed over to the buyer, and whose thin dead body was produced in Court, wore the first called, and, after an examination of tho parties as well as witnesses, the colored individual was discharged, and the white man fined $3. A white person, who was put in the Guard House a few nights ago for being drunk and lying down in the street, and who gave his name as PATRICK O'RAFFERTY, was brought up again this morning, under his real name, for a similar o?enoe and fined $5. Rebecca Brown and Eliza Small, two colored damsels, who bad been fighting in the street, and using language which they gave the Court a speci? men of in tho course of their examination, were each fined $10. A female from one of the interior towns, elegant? ly dressed, and with a very black eye, the result of bom;; tripped up in the street by a to.tie, was dis? charged, her genteel appearance indicating that this was not a regular habit with her. A light colored boy who was found asleep in tho mall, and who stated that he bad no money to ob? tain a lodging place, having been discharged by his employer, was sent to look for work. On being asked why he was dismissed from bis situation he replied that he didn't know, but ho thought it was a very foolish idea on the part of the gentleman who hired him. COURT OF COMMON PLEAS-Hon. THUS. W. GLOVES presiding.-Judge MUNRO appeared and rendered a few decisions in cases that had been tried before him, when the seat waa again taken by Judge GLOVER, who presided during the re? mainder of the day.
