We infer from the following extract from the Tribune that while the Northern press is begin? ning to realize the danger and injustice of an organized agitation throughout the South, it is yet unwilling to abandon entirely the Boheme of mischief: The Southern blacks are mainly ignorant-they have been roared under the domination of the law of force-they have not been trained to reverence the rights of property-their experience does not accord with tue truth that the way to comfort and competence hes through persistent daily industry j, nd frugality. To tell such men-strong only m muscle and m numbers-that they havo only to wait tUl a judge is out of tho way, when they may -hold hign carnival," and that the property around them is rightfully thurra and will bo inado over to them after a while-what is this but to arrest pro? ductive labor and enthrone general anarchy ? Never before was there such urgent need of wiso, considerate, judicious canvassers os there is to? day ia tho South. They should be thoughtful, loving, noble, generous mon, who know what to leave unsaid as weil os what to say-who wiU in? culcate charity and kindness, not wrath and ven? geance. In short, we need a hundrod SUCH mon I as Henry Wilson to speak throughout thc South for the next six months. ' We hardly think that if he read carefully the speeches of Mr. WILSON, Mr. GREELEY would have referred to them as specimens of what he I considers, "loving, noble and generous." In j [ his speech at Richmond Mr. GRESLEY himself furnished a better model; and putting aside thc disorganization of labor which all such agitation must provoke at a time when the steady, unremitting application of that labor is vitally important to tho welfare of both blade and while, from such speeches perhaps some good would result. But no caro or cau? tion ou the part of Executive Cuuimitlees can securo the services of the men who could safely be trusted to follow Mr. GREELBY'S example. Nor is it reasonable to suppose that even I good men, who come here with honest inten? tions but very bitter prejudices-who work themselves up to the enthusiasm of missiona-1 rica, who are doing battle with the powers of I darkuess-will long be loving, noble or gene- I rous. If they find open opposition their work J of conversion will become a work of oontrover- I ay. and it is not in nature that an embarrassed J orator will be scrupulous as to the sort oft weapon he uses in reply. Words, OTBU dry words, like dry sticks rubbed together, will I produae flame. Tho object of this agitation is clearly the suc? cess of the Republic an party, not the benefit of the freedmen. Emancipation and universal suffrage are established beyond peradventure; and traveling orators who would undertake to convince the colored vote of the South that they were in any danger-that there was any power or intention to unsettle them-would j scarcely be the sort of men whom Mr. G BUE LE Y describen as fit to send. . Now, if this be so, the only questions before the voters of the State, are who shall be sent to the Convention, and what changes shall be made in the State Constitution. These are questions upon which the colored voters of the State certainly need no advice. They know better than any Northern counsellors who are the men from whom they oan choose. They know their characters, their antecedents, and, j above all, what and how sincere are their pre sent opinions, as manifested by their daily ao- I tiona. They are perfectly oompotent to select j their own,candidates. As to the changes in the Constitution, and the legislative action necessary to secure full opportunities for education, prevision for the poor and infirm, wise taxation, just apportion? ment of .representation, and all other benefits of a free and wise government, there is just as little need of advice from abroad.' And the' colored voters of this State are surely intelli gent enough to understand that if, as the re? sult of such an agitation, the white and black vote of the State are marshalled in opposition, that while in some sections of the State tho numerical superiority of the blacks will secure [. a representation, yet the general representa? tion of the whole State will be overwhelmingly of the white majority, for they will not over? look the fact, if they aro practical men, thal this numerical superiority, is not diffused over the State, but concentrated in special sections. I It may control a district, but it cannot control cither thc Convention or tho Legislature. It is clear, that tluir interest is not to go into the Convention or the Legislature as a compact, but small, minority, but so to use their general j influence as to secure in these bodies represen? tations who will cheerfully recognize their rights, and whose superior influence and expe? rience will govorn thuse bodies in perfecting j the requisite laws. We are glad to seo all over the Stall evi? dences that this conviction is growing, and in tho recent meeting at Sumter several of tho colored speakers expressed opinions which were creditable alike to their sense and to their feelings. We would be glad to be spared a summer of angry excitement. The condition of the State is such that all the "loving" talk in the world can do us no good. What we want just now is steady, uninterupted work, which will en? able the laborer and the employer both to look forward hopefully across these months of abso? lute suffering to the returns of a successful har? vest, j We see that Judge KELLY, although he way resent, hos profited wisely by the troubles in Mobile, and at Montgomery has made a speech which might be listened to by all without offence. It was, as we have it reported, a glowing prophecy as to the capabilities of Ala? bama, and their future prosperous develop? ment. Judge KELLY can serve that develop ment even better than by speech-making, and { that ?rey leaving the labor and capital of the country undisturbed by political agitation, to speed the plough together in tho hope of a cer? tain crop. N If, however, in spite of all the warnings of common sense, this agitation is commenced, we think our people ought to be prepared to meet it. We have received an account of a meeting I in or near Camden, at which, after the "out side'' philanthropist had spoken, the meeting was addressed by Hon. JAMES CHESNUT, Gen. KERSHAW and Gen. KENNEDY with great judg? ment, and with the happiest effect. A higher duty could not have been more fitly discharged, ond such men so employed furnish an example to which no words of ours can give wider in- I fluence or higher authority.
