Quickstep, Medley. THE ATTENTION of our readers is called to the ? advertisements, in another column, of Messrs. BZBOXB, SCHUTTS & Co., Chemists, Troy, N. Y. They are manufacturera of, and agents for, some of tho most valuable toilet preparations ia use. By their use all may possess a clear, smooth skin, or a healthy and luxuriant growth of hair upon the head or face. Those of our readers having use for anything of tho kind would do well to pa? tronize them. PKSSONAL.-We unintentionally omitted yeste? rday to chronicle the event of the season; the arri? val in our sanctum of our genial friend JULIAN A. SELBY; of the Columbia PJwenir* His shadow does ot grow less, and a glance at his six feet propor? tions reminds us .that they were giants in those days. Mr. SELBY is the proprietor of the most flou ' rlaning journal in the intoriorjof this State and its large circulation and influence commends it to our merchants saan advertising medium. : ROUND THE CORNER.-Under this title GEORGE W. POND & Co. have, at the south corner of East Bay and Auger's Wharf, one of the coziest restau? rants that can be found in our city, where the best wines and liquors,, as well as a most agreeable lunch, can alway?be found, and where the prices ; are . considerably lower than in other eitablish mente. Sit?atel as he is, in the business part of j the town, we feel satisfied that this slight hint : > w?l bo sufficient to insure them custom from those who are borne down by the heat of the sim, or who are too muoh employed to take their dinner at a home. - ROBBERIES.-On tho 30th ult. the store of Messrs. GEORGE LITTLE & Co., in King street, was brokon -ii into by going through Princess street and prying off the bar at the back window. Tho thioves ht the gas, and helped themselves, carrying off be? tween ?500 and $600 worth of clothing. Lieuten? ant HENDBIOEB put the case in the hands of officor MEYER, who soon traced the parties, and had tr cm . arrested. A greater portion of the goods were rc i covered, although they were scattered in different houses. Lieutenant HENDRICKS also succeeded in recovering a fine gold watch that had been stolen from Mr. HENRY BURROUGHS by a negro, who suo eoquently sold it to a white man named JAMES MAURICE for three douars. Both parties have been arrested. IBON FOUNDRY AND MACHINE SHOP.-The sound of the hammer and the anvil has always been con? sidered the most cheering sign of prosperity, and few cities are destitute of this melody. There is perhaps, no placoy where business and music aro combined to a'greater extent than in a machine shop, and the ring of metal at once tolls a tale of | Lie and activity; Charleston can boost of ni any of these estebhshmeuta, but we wish to refer par? ticularly to the Foundry of Messrs. JOHN F. T A Y XDB & Co., in Pritchard street. These gentlemen nave made extensive preparations to conduct the -business on a large seale, and can turn out any machinery that may bo required. They have now in course of erection an additional machine shop, with all the latent improvements, which will en? able them to turn out any work demanded. The shops being near the water, any kind ot marine work can be* performed with great faoility. Wc ' commend Messrs. TAYLOR & Co. to the good graces of tba pnblic, being assured that they will never .want patronage. Tax HCBERNIOON_The crowds that attended the Hibernian Hall last night testified that their appreciation ol'the performance was not weaken . el, and the different scenes, and the jokes of BARNEY were received with repeated encores. It is impossible to do justice to this performance, as the variations are so pleasing that they at once at? tract* the- attention ' which is kept enchained throughout. The acting is extremely good, and the life-like appearance of the different characters can hardly be surpassed. To-day, it will be remembered, is the last, but hy no means the least, as there will be a grand matinee in the afternoon, which bas been arranged for the especial accommodation of famines and Bchools, at reduced prices. In the evening there w?l be a farewell benefit of the popular Guide, BARNEY, in which all of the wonders of the enter? tainment will be exhibited. BARNEY has so endear? ed himself to his audiences i by -his rieh jokes that we predict an astonishingly full house, and advise none to stay away who can make tie trip. THE LADIES' MEMORIAL ASSOCIATION.-The an? nual ceremony of decorating the graves of the Con federate dead was observed yesterday, hot only at Magnolia Cemetery but at the private grave yards in the city. When tho Association was first formed the 16th of June, the anniversary of the battle of Socoesionvillo, was chosen as their anniversary, but it was'thought best to ohange this to the 10th of Hay, the anniversary of Gen. STONEWALL JACKSON 'S death, as this day was observed by the associations in sister cities. After due deliberation among the members, it was decided to make no ostentatious display of sorrow, but simply to dress the tombs of the fallen heroes with their floral offerings. In consequence of this reticence on their part few out? siders were aware that the day had been changed or that any preparations had be cn made to cele? brate the occasion. Ibo ladies of the Association had been busily en? gaged for several days in collecting their tribute of flowers, and forming them into the different ornaments to be employed in decking the soldiers graves. Every garden in the city was taxed, but the larger portion were furnished from the garden of Mr. STBOUB, the keeper of the Cemetery. The day was bright, clear, and beautiful; it seemed as if nature hod smiled upon the scene and had aided the holy causo, by the charm of a balm v air laden with the breath of flowers. By six o'clock in tho morning many wore on the ground arranging the wreaths of flowers and im? mortelles on the several graves, but it was not until 4 P. M. that the crowd bogan to assemble, and in a short time the cemetery was covered with fair maidens bending over the last resting places of the gallant dead, and tenderly arranging thc immortelles upon the mounds. Nearly four hun? dred persons were present, and, with very few ex? ceptions, these were all ladies-members of the Association and others, who had somo friend or relative buried in this sacred spot. No ceremonies of any description were observed, and boyond placing the floral tribute upon tho graves, no demonstration was made; no hymns were sung, or prayers offered, except those that catre from tho heart of hearts, and which were heard only by tho Great Being to whom they were addressed. The decorations of the graves were very similar to those of last year, and some care was observed that none should escape attentiou. The t -oldier's burying ground shows at once the care that has been bestowed upon it. Tho head stones have been placed at fifty graves, and others will be sup? plied soon. Tlie grounds have been laid out and are surrounded by a wild orange hedge, and lli3 whole appearance a great improvement on thc barren and desolate look it presented last year. Each grave was tastefully ornamented with gar? lands and wreaths; and though m. some instances the mounds covered unknown dead, yet all received fae same kind attention. In other parts of the cemetery tho gallant soldier was not forgotten; and the numerous wreaths that were to be seen in every diroction proved that their memory was still green. Among others thc ?rave of Captain JOHN MITCHEL (tho gallant son of the distinguished Irish exile) was very hand i somely decorated. Capt M., who it will bo remcm borcd, fell whilo in command at Fort Sumter, lies buried in a triangular lot near the Receiving Tomb. Tho lot bas boon recently shoped to repre? sent tho bastion ol a fortress, neatly onclo?ed with brickwork, and planted with aneniuones. The samo affection and friendship that has supcrin tondod these arrangements, we learn, contem? plates adding further improvements to this grave. lu tho abseuco of tho President of tho Associa tiou, Mrs. SNOWDEN, tho arduous duties of arrang? ing tho Drogrammo and of seeing that it was car? ried out, devolved upon tho Vicc-President, .Miss MART C. BURROUGHS, and thc thorough manner in which the numerous graves were docorntod wa? principally duo to her untiring exertions. The Indies of the Association desired to make nodi? play that would attract attention and causo them t bo tho objecta of ill natured romarke, and feel? ing that their motives wero puro and holy, they 'iuew that no ono who had any respect for the bravo derv.i would interfere with thom. Yet it wai thought to bc the bost plan to perform thou-sad du? ties without any ostentation. The cemetery has boen placed in thorough order, and a gate-keeper ap? pointed who refuses ontranco to all persons with? out tickets. This cour-:o hos boen adopted to pre? vent thc mutilation and destruction of tho shrub? bery and ornaments in tho grounds. Tho different church-yards in tho city were also visited during the day, and the graves of the dead soldiers received tho samo kind attention as that oatowed on thc cemetery. MATCH'S COURT, May 10.-A white boy, who, with several othors, bad cleaned out a basket of black? berries belonging to a colored woman, and bad not exhibited the slightest idea of paying for them, was brought up and fiued $2. Tho balance of the party unfortunately escaped, or they would have received a losson from his Honor, which we think they would have long remembered. John Bavonel was a colored man who had attend? ed a party without an invitation, and in his anxiety to show that he was present, had knocked down another man of tho name of Johnson, who merely appeared at Court for the laudablo purpose of en? deavoring to find out why he was so unceremoni? ously floored, but got no satisfaction. His Honor thought that as Ravenel had boen locked up nil night, he was sufficiently punished, and the par? ties retired, Johnston evidently Bhowin? that ho bad not been enlightened as regards the pugilistic attask. A sailor who was very tight and interfering with ereons in the street, won fined $3. COTJBT OF COMMON PLEAS-Hon. B. MUNRO presiding.-The Civil Enquiry Docket was called and a number of cases roi erred to the Clerk, and a number of judgments rendorod, but of no public interest. The caso of tkeExocutor of YAGER es. tho South Carolina Railroad Company was taken up. S.ui TTRXI Lons, Esq., appearing for the plaintiff, and General JAB. CONNOR as Solicitor for thc Company. Tho points in the case were, that some time in November, 18GG, several bales of cotton wore sont from Georges' Station to Charleston, consigned to Mr. YAGER. The consignee was notified by tho company tho day after the arrival; on tho day fol? lowing tho drayman of the plaintifi called for tho cotton and was informed Lhat a balo had been sto? len the night previous. Tho action was brought to recover the value of tho lost cotton, as tho com? pany refused to indemify tho consignee, alleging that they were not responsible after tho notifica? tion. This occasioned a considerable discussion, and the case was argued ably on both sides, but tho Judgo returned a verdict of $400 for tho pon? tiff. UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT-Hon. GEO. S. BRYAN, presiding.-Attachments were issued . in tho following cases, and monitions returnable in two weeks from this date. Tho United States vs. nineteen bnrrols of dis? tilled spirits, and sixty-nino empty barrels, found at the 8toro of W. if. KIDD, in Charleston. For forfeiture for violation of tho Internal Bcvouuc Laws of the United States. The United States vs. nineteen barr?le of dis? tilled spirits, found at tho store of MANTO?E & Co. The United States es. twenty-four barrels of dis? tilled spirits, fonnd at the store of J. W. BAOOETT & Co. Tho United States ve. throe barrels "of distilled spirits, fouud at the store of G. W. POND & Co. The United States vs. two stills and all the ap? purtenances thereunto belonging, found on thc promises of W. E. PROTHRO, in Barnwell District. The District Attorney bas withdrawn all of tho cases for violation of tho Internal Bovonue laws from tho docket, declining to prosecuto under thc present circumstances, and has roportod to higher authorities the inability to secure conviction be? fore the juries. If the test oath is over applied there are Lut few who contd conscientiously take it, and it is more than probablo that all of their sympathies and prejudices should bo in favor of the government, and a correct verdict bo equally hard to obtain. In all cases an intelligent jury gives the prisoners the benefit of any doubt. Tho sases for violation of the Internal Ko venue woro based on the testimony of detectives and States svidenoe, which was, in many cases, weak and ap? parently given in malice. Under those circum? stances, the verdict has generally been in favor of | the accused, but it is a hard matter to charge these juries with antagonism to tho United States, is they have been usually composed of nur best citizens, and the same verdict would probably lave been rendered in a Northern Court. COURT OF APPEALS.-In the Court of Appeals, on Thursday, opinions were announced in tho follow? ing causes: Samuel D. Hodge ads. tho State.
