Three steamboats wero sold last Wednesday, .at St. Louis, by the Atlantic and Mississippi Steamship Company, for an aggregate price of 06,500 ? Tho horse railroad in Worcester, Mass., has proved a failure, and the rails aro to be taken up, ?nie!? a new company will purchase the franchise and property. A law IQ Canada prohibits the killing of insec? tivorous hirds. A police magistrate at Ottawa has decided snipe to be insectivorous, and sportsmen are in dismay. It is said the Board of Directors of the National Soldiers' and Sailors' Asylum have purchased the Ohio White Sulphur Springs, to be used as an asy? lum as provided hy act of Congress. The New York Christian Association proposes to erect a building to cost (200,000, corner of Fourth avenue and Twenty-third street. Tho subscrip? tions have progressed so favorably that the mana? gers feel justified in commencing operations. Every policeman in Chicago carries with him pieces of boiled beef prepared with nm v?mica, upon which he regales tho dogs which he happens to meet. Some thousands of worthless curs have ' shuffled off their mortal coil under this regimen, and still the work proceeds. Rev. E>r. WOBOXSTSB, the eminent founder of the New Jerusalem Church in America, has just sur? rendered his pastorate, and intends to devote the rest of his life to the composition of works on the Apocalypse and the Prophets. He has long, or rather always, hold the first place in the New Church in this country. The Boston correspondent of the New York Evening Post says that "Professor THEOPHILUB PASSONS ia said to be engaged on a theological ?Work to bo entitled 'Deua Homo.' From the title and. well-known views of the distinguished author, I infer that it will be a popular presentation of the . New Church (or Swedenborg's) theory of the divine humanity." ??i Kansas City, Mo., contains about 16,000 inhab? itants, and is hopeful of leading the cities weat of St^Louis. She is striving for the Santa Fo and Fort Scott railroads. The railroad at Wyandotte, Kansas, is built so low under the bluffs of tho Mis - souiri that it is now four feet under water, and the river still rising. Goods and passengers are taken from Kansas City to Wyandotte by steamer. . .. In Franco 9072 miles of railroad aro now in ope . ration, and 4090 miles more are in course of con? struction. The French .'government has made a grant of $290,000,000 to theso railroads, on condi? tion that'at tho end of 99 years, the roadways ?nd tracks shall become the property .of thena ' tien. The companies, however, are to retain the laffing stock and other personal property. . ' An editor's bliss in tho next world is spoken of ?s follows : "In that, paradise tho cry of 'more ia ?0py! will, never again fall upon his distracted ear. His enjoyment will no more be interrupted by the growls of unreasonable subscribers, and he will no more be troubled with illegible manuscript and abominable poetry. No rival editor will steal his thunder or his items, and typographical errors shall know him no more forever." ' The chief incomes in Chicago during 1866 were aa follows: C. H. MCCORMICK, $169,760; PETZB. SCHOTTLSK, "wagon manufacturer," $111,625 ; B. P. Htrraratsoit,-.. commission merchant, $73,609 (in . 1865 it waa but$3,0Cl); WZSLET MUKOEB, $79,949 ; GEOEQE Annans, elevator proprietor, $71,950 (in . ; 1965--bis income was but $12,352); J.D. COLE, Jr. 452,700 ; L. M. MCCORMICK, $50,215 ; H. T. DICK? ST, $61,727. Tho tornado which swept through Ne 7 Jersey bet week, ia described as '-a dark, huge, funnel shaped mass, ffluminated at intervals by electrical explosions, whirling, swaying, surging and forcing its way, rapid in progress and fearful in power. Now veering to the right and anon to tho left, plunging furiously forward and sharply recoiling, . it swept away all that obstructed its course, and bj it? eccentric evolutions made the path of deso? lation much wider than its own bulk could have effected had it rolled onward in a straight line." The New York Times says well-informed Gor? mans in New-York .have little faith in the London dJarJstenm, a&a means of restoring pacific rela . tiona between Prussia and France. Their reason Hingis very, simple. France says beforehand it wanta no extention of territory. It will ask Prus? sia to make a similar pledge. Prussia will not do > - it", becaxiso her principal aim ia to extend-her ter? ritory so aa to perfect German unity. Prussia is .^determined Franco shall not have Luxemburg. France is bent upon defeating Prussian aggran . d?emeni. Therefore, though tb ero may. bo a truce, there can beno lasting peace. This rea? soning ia ptensible, and. it expresses the convic? tions of others besides well-informed Germans. ; -8ome tunny anecdotes of .the niggardly charar. v , tor of M. COUSIN, who has recently died, have been. circulated.- His youthful washerwoman, ; .whom h? bad known as a child, and was very par? tial to, called upon him one day, when he asked - her if she bad evor read any of his works. "No, Monsieur Conant." "Would you like to read one?" ''Certainly." M. Conan? took down a volume-Le -Trait Le Beau, Le Bim. At the end of the month tho wB^erwoinan presented her bill, IS francs 25 cents! " "That is quite correct," said M. Cousu*, hut we must deduct 3 fiancs 50 cents for the hook, . which leaves 9 francs and 76 cents; there are 10 tranca, you may keep the 5 BOUS, my little dear, lor yourself." A Western man, now visiting at the East, thus writes of the cost of living m the two sections : "I nave been surprised to learn, while in New Eng? land, that the cost of living is really less here than jn the West, from which bread and meat is trans? ported to cup ply New England. Flour is only a - trifle higher per barrel in Portland than it ?B in Chicago, and potatoes and all vegetables are con Biberably cheaper. Only four articles cost moro here {ban in Chicago- bread, meat, butter and hird ; all else which is needed in a family coats less. Bents here and in Boston, and in the manufactur? ing towns of New England generally, are nearly one-half less than in Chicago and the small towns of the West. Wood and coal are no higher, while clothing, furniture, dry goods, boots and shoes, are from 10 to 20 per cent, cheaper. ' The Buffalo and Erie Railroad Company have adopted for their trains on invention called tho "Hand Station Indicator." Its object is to do away with the custom of crying out each station, hy having a "machine" in each car which indicates .in succession the several stations as the train ap? proaches them. The names of the stations are on white cloth, which is moved by rollers, and each torn of tho rollers brings the namo of the next station to view after tho maimer of somo counting rbom calen-tiara, at the samo time striking a bell which, calls tho attontion of passongors to tho change. It is operated by the hand of tho conduc? tor or brakeman. Tho general heading under which thc name of tho station appears is : "This train next slops at-." The invention appears to meet a long existing want and will undoubtedly find favor with other railroad companies, but for tho benefit of inattentive persons and of those un? able to read, tho custom of announcing the names of stations Bhould be kept np. ' The report of tho French Transatlantic Steam Navigation Company, presented at the annual meeting held in Paris, contains interesting obser? vations on the superiority of screws to paddle wheels. The prosperity of tho company is attrib .nted to the good Bea-gc ing qualities of the now vessels, and especially the great economy attend? ing tho use of screw steamer*. According to the report just made, "the use of thc screw procures, tor vessels of equal tonnage, a saving of about 25 per cent, in fuel, with an increase of 20 per cent, in speed." The advantage thus obtained is said to have been proved in a most decisive manner by the experiment of the St. Laurent, which was at first Intended to have paddle wheels, but in course of building was changed into a screw vessel. Two other steamers, considered too slow for present requirements, are to bo similarly improved in the mode, of propulsion. The system adopted is the double screw, which has been successfully tried in England and' in tho French Imperial navy. The conclusions thus arrived at have an important bearing upon mercantile interests. STOW. SATURDAY MORNING, MAY ll. 18G7. JOB WORK.-We have now completed our office so as to execute, in the shortest possible time, ALL KINDS OF JOD WORK, and we most respectfully ask the patronage of our friends. HOV. It. BARNWELL, RHETT. We notice by the telegram that Hon. R. B. RHETT is now in Washington for the purpose of examining thc public archives for informa? tion to be used in a history of the late civil difficulties which he purposes to write. Telegraphic news is not always reliable, but we sincerely hope that this is true. Whatever may be or may have been our dif? ferences of opinion on public matters with this distinguished man, no one can recognise more fully than we do his great ability, the purity of his private character, the singular and tenacious consistency of his public life, and the fact that he is pre-eminently the repre? sentative of a school of statesmen whose creed and influence have indeed passed away, but who must always occupy a large and enduring place in the political history of the country. From his early manhood Mr. RHETT has been one of the influences of the State, and he has always enjoyed the full confidence of his con? stituents. Iiis long personal experience, his intimacy with all the great political leaders of tho last forty years, his active and ardent par? ticipation in all the great events of our pul it ?cal history, the energy and pertinacity of his con? victions, and the fact that he has survived most of his famous cotcmporarics, will give both im? portance and interest to his history of the past. M. RHETT has lived to see the ut ter ex? tinction of the Constitution and thc civilization under which were nurtured his warmest affec? tions and his most earnest convictions. For him thc active strife of life is over, and he can do no better service to those who aro to come after him than to place upon lasting record his recollections of his political life. It is more than likely that the young and earnest men who are growing up to be tho thinkers and actors of another and very differ? ent generation, will not read his history in the same light by which ho will write, but they will turn to it with tho assurance that they will find in its pages honest convictions, im? portant truth, rich and varied information, and, above all, a devoted love to that Stale whom in their day wc hope they will serve with equal fidelity, ability and honor. SPEECH OF MR. SPEAKER COLFAX. We do not generally think it worth while to call thc attention of our readers to the speeches of Northern politicians; for wc think il makes very little difference to us what they dn say. The duly which lies before us will scarcely bc lightened by their opinions. From nono of them have we received any help, and from none of them do wc expect any sympathy. But Mr. COLFAX occupies a position in which thc expression of opinion is something more significant than a mere individual's, and wc all recollect that his speech made in Washington just before the opening of the Thirty-ninth Congress was faithfully indicative of the course pursued by thc Republican party during the next two years. On the 6th of May a reception was given Mr. COLFAX by the Union League of thc city of .few York, upon the occasion of his delivering a lecture before that body. Mr. JOHN JAY, when introducing Mr. COLFAX, said "we trust that the speaker may presently order the roll call of representatives from every State of the re-united Republic," and in reply Mr. COLFAX said what we think our people may fairly con? sider the expression of opinion of the Republi? can party. "The vast majority in the South are ignoring all their life-long prejudices and hastening to accept these terms (the recon? struction act). Nor need I say to you that hav? ing carefully, elaborated these laws, having passed and then repassed thom over the inevit? able veto of the Executive, the great party which has thus become reponsible for them in? tend to stand by tljem faithfully and literally, if their terms are complied with by the rebel States in good faith and without evasion. They would be branded with dishonor and their fame tarnished forever if they did not. But it is a party whose plighted word to the people bas never been broken and will not be now." THE EUROPEAN CONFERENCE. The much talked of Conference of European Powers met in London on Tuesday, and came to a dead lock on Wednesday. Of great Pow? ers, England, France, Prussia and Austria were present; also Italy, Holland and Belgium, thus affording ample opportunity to review Eu? ropean affairs generally. But such appears not to have been the intention of tho crowned heads who sent these plenipotentiaries. In? deed, it would he difficult to say what their in? structions could have been. The facts arc simply these: . There is a quarrel between France and Prussia, not because of any wrong committed by cither to thc other: not because of any insult, but simply for thc championship of Western Europe; just as we had thc great international "mill," a few years ago, be? tween England and the United States, repre? sented by Messrs. HEENAN and SAYXUS. Frauce has worn "the belt" for three quarters of a century, during which time her supremacy was never questioned for more than a few years at a time. Prussia at last got restive, and by a clever raauujuvrc eluded thc vigilance of NAPOLEON. The strata? gem met with tlc mest brilliant success, far beyond all reasonable expectation. Prussia, it is true, has not borne her laurels either quiet ly cv very meekly. On ?he contrary idie lias been much given to boasting. This has irritated France, aud her Government has in turn en? deavored lo get even with Prussia, by circum? venting her in thc Luxemburg affair. BIS? MARCK, however, got wind ol' it just in thc nick of time, and put his veto upon thc transaction. Growling in Taris; a counter growl at Berlin: general arming on both sides of the Rhine; money men alarmed, Hatte;; fal!, ?iud armories ul work night and day from the Day uf Biscay to the Vistula. Now England suggests that there is no use poing to war about nothing : any trifling differ? ence such as exists between thc two august commanders, can easily and amicably be ad? justed by a free interchange of views at a Euro? pean conference. The rival champions con? sent to the meeting. They meet, but as each of them cannot have what they want, the ques? tion is still as far from settled as ever. Prus? sia we are told, consents to the evacuation und dismantling of thc fortress of Luxemburg, provided thc other great powers, who ure par? ties to the treaty, will guarantee the contiu uance ol' tho neutrality of thc grand duchy, und bind themselves io lighl cither Fmuce or Prussia, in caso either of tlicin shall be found disposed to violate the provisions of tho tronly, and invading thia neutral Territory. Here waif a drawback, lt scorns some of thc plenipotentiaries had power to bind their gov? ernments to such a cornpac?. They therefore asked lime to consult with their "con? stituencies.'' We doubt much if England will enter on stielt stipulation, ns it is not to hov interest to be? come again involved in the complications of continental politics. Mr. DISRAELI, not a year ago. remarked that England"* policy is to stand aloof from the petty squabbles of European di? plomacy. She is more ol' an Asiatic than a European power. As Mr. DISRAELI ??now one of the principal members of ?Iii* British Gov? ernment, it is fair to siirnike ?hat tho ministry will not be in favor ol' entering such a com? pact. In the meantime, we tire told, ariuiug is steadily progressing on bnlb Vide.?, and war is uol unlooked for. WANTS. WANTED, A BASS SINGER FOR A CHURCH who can read Music fluontly.
