These Hales offer rare inducomonts to tho purchaser, and we advise a largo attendance. MELANCHOLY ACCIDENT.-We learn from a lotter received in this city of a melancholy accident that occurred in the town of Anderson, S. C. On Fri? day last, Miss SARAH RUTLEDGE, a daughter of thc I late JOHN RUTLEDGE, Esq., left nor home in A'adcr 1 i on to take a walk, purposing to join her mother F and Bister, who had preceded her. Not returning r t tho customary hour her fricad i became alarmed i uni went in search of her, but without success, r and it was not until tho i.oxt day that her body was iliscovercd in Rocky river. It was supposed that having taken tho wrong path sho had lost her foot? ing and fallon in tho river, and no one hoing near to rescue her had polished. BOBBERY.-Robberies havo boen so frequent 1 itely, that scarcely a night passes without some attempt bei :g made to broak into a store or house. On Wednesday night tho atoro of Mr. W. B. BURKE ia Chalmers street, was entered hy some evil dis? posed persons, and robbed of a fine coat, two canaries and cages and some smaller articles. The robbers gained access to the building: by lift? ing ono of the shutters from its fastenings, and taking out the sash. Mr. BURKE had just opened his establishment as a produce atoro, and thc thieves anticipated a heavy haul, but were fortu? nately mistaken. Tho caso is now in tao hands of the detectives, who will soon bring tho miscreants to account. THE CONCERT LAST NIGHT.-Tara's Hall was once rgain filled last night with a large and very reefcercoo audience, brought together by tho twin motive of charity and the laudable desire to en? gage in tho highly reined enjoyment of listening to good vocal and instrumental music. "Marion Lodge, No. 2, of L 0. 0. F., before thc war, waa one of the most prosperous and efiicieut benevo I lent organizations in this city; but losses during the war, and tho very largo number of claimants upon their bounty, have necessitated an extraordi? nary effort to replenish tho treasury; and tho ener? getic committee of arrangements, assisted by the entire lodge, succeeded in bringing together a large audience, and we hope, also, a largo amount of money. The concer t has been long on tho tapis, and, thanks to the unwearied efforts of Professors BERKHAM and O'NEAXE, and their able corps of volunteer assistants, everything passed off re? markably well. The orchestra, although represented by six in' ?tramonte only, was excellent-every man being master of his instrument. There were two violins, ene bas^ violin, Ante, clarionet and piano. They gave tho overtures "Masanillo" and "La Rame Plancho," with adniirable effect. The chorusses, siso, showed, care and industry, though there seemed to be a lack of voices, particularly in tho bass. The Duett, anne by Miss G. R. and Mrs. C.,-MENDELSOHN'S "Ich wolU meine Lieb'' erg?sse sich"-was interpreted with much taste and great artistic execution. Misa. S. did herself brilliant credit in her Piano Solo, and, being loudly encored, obliged the audience, with a second piece. - ? The solo ^erryBirds," by GUMBERT ("ICA bill JSuch, Hebe Vocgel&in"), a very pretty song, wa? admirably executed by Mrs. CARROL, and earned -Sample plaudits. Prof. O'NEAXE sang the Tenor Molo (No. 4 on the programme), and always a favor? ite with the public, was encored, and gratified bis admirera with a repetition of tho song. Tho duett * ' Quel Mara, Quel Terra," sung by Mrs. C. and Mr. F., was conscientiously rendered, and followed by the concluding chorus, tho popular "Away, Awayl" of AUBER.' DISREPUTABLE CHARACTERS.-Our city has boen infested, for a long time, with a set of lazy, worth Jess colored idlers, who havo no apparent means cf support, but are to be seen dressed in fino clothes and.lounging around tho street cornera. These characters, who represent only a very small portion of the colored class, are well known to the police authorities,, and have been frequently de? tected in gambling and in cheating the honest country negroes out of their hard earned money. Within the past few weeks a number of robberies have occurred, but in every ins tonco tho perpetra? tors have/been discovered and committod to jail. They have all been recognized as belonging to the ' crowd of loafing vagrants montionod ahovo; and, deeming it a wise precaution, several more of ; tho same gang were arrested on a suspicion of being implicated in the late robberies. If this charge should be unfounded, they can bo committed for vagrancy, which will havo tho effect ?of ridding the cr'ty of their presence for a time, 'and of putting a curb on their propensity for ac? quiring, property unlawfully. Th? military au? thorities will place no barrier in tho way, but will, if needed, aid the police in making arrests and in securing suspicious persons. Since tho incarce? ration of the eleven or twelve captured on Wed? nesday, tho city bas boen comparatively quiet, and though robberies wi 1 still continue, the certainty that the thieves will be punished will have a whole? some effect in preventing the rapid increase of crime. CLEANING BRICKS.-Tho Burnt District was orna? mented during the greater portion of last year by crowds of busy freedmen who could bo seen acatcd in the shadow of an old wall industriously engaged in cleaning the burnt bricks and piling them neat? ly in rows ready for U60. This employment was at ?ne time so common, and tho number of freedmen so numerous, that many persons imagined that the day of reconatruction had indeed arrived, and the raids mado upon tho old walls was only the be ginning of the new era. Unfortunately then* opin? ions were erroneous, and.their dreams ol" "cloud capped towers and gorgeous palaces'' have faded and left only tho rack behind. Tho industrious freedmen dropped off ono by ene, and, before thc results of their work could bo seen ?ind apprecia? ted, there was scarcely a laborer left, though thc harvest was still abundant. % The reason for this wholesale desertion is un? known, the stringency of tho times and Ute scarcity of labor may havo been tho causo, but it is more than probable that tho political agitations produced by the Radicals of Congress has stopped the work and caused tho apathy that has apparent? ly affected both the laborer and his employer. A vigorous onslaught on the ruins would havo soon levelled them to tho ground, and if no other good result h td followed, it would have opened tho city to the seabreeze, and by removing tho unsightly piles, havo afforded a better pasture to tho cows than they now possess. At present thc burnt dis? trict is an eyo sore to the community, but it is uot yet too late to improvo it: and wo aro pleased to notice that some persons havo tho energy to koop up the work of restoration. During the past few day* a solitary freedman might have beon discerned in tho vicinity of tho old Apprentices' Library silling on a pile of bricks like MARIUS at the ruins of Carthago, but, indi ko him, the African of our day was not meditating, but industriously hammering away tit t e obsti? nate mortar. "One swallow does net make e sum? mer, " but that solitary freedman is, we hope, the advance guard of a mighty host, who armed ?with pick and trowel, will make a havoc among the ^tnins that will soon number them among the things that were. So mote it be. THE HIBEBNICON, after a temporary suspension, in coBscqacnco of tho Odd Fellows convert last night, will resumo operations this evening. Thc Professor, und BABNEY. tlie widow MACHBEE, and tbe "g?rril Judy," will all rc-appcar with recupera? ted pow. ri. Tho tour will lw varied lo-niqht and parts of tho island visited, hitherto unknown lo travellers. An attractive fcat:ro will bo "tho Haunted Guido," or BABNEY and the Ghost, There will also bo new comic and sentimental songs. There is to lie a matinee to-morrow afternoon, and a la.-t exhibition to-morrow night. Schools ind families will have a fine opportunity to see this splendid panorama to-morrow afternoon. ASSAULT AND BATTEBY. -Tn referrring to tho iiiackbcrry venders, wo had no idea that we had ?nado them the head contres of attraction, bnt this lon proved to be tho caso. Yesterday afternoon -.no Edward Gasney a colored youth of a low sum? ners, instigated by thc devil and his love of thc "mit. uindo a rapid charge at a basket full in thc rhargo of Eugene Ford, an African merchant, aral ; pac tiing it, was soon revelling in the spoils. His oy was quickly turned to mourning, when pounced ipon by the police aud carried to thc G uard House, mt being of a musical temperament bc consoled limseU" by singing, *? BARKER, Esq., for the dc Dndhiit. This case was an action brought by Dr. VHALEY for loss sustained from worthless cot? on eed purchased from Mr. YENNING. HO claimed hat tho seed was sold without a guarantee as to :s character. He had planted the seed and had Hitched it from its early growth to maturity, and ras sntisficd of its worthlessness, air. YENNING ad been purchasing seed from every quarter in rder to sell it again, and could say nothing about :s origin or purity. Mr. YENNESG'S statement was that thc plaintiff | ad planted the .?oed and did not inform him that herc wa- any defect until six weeks or two months fter planting, and then only through his attorney, "ho plaintiff had moreover purchased seed from ther parties, which was planted the same time, nd without any notification. A number ol' wit esses woro examined and tho caso was argued on otb sides with great ability. Tho jury retired, nd after a long absence, brought in a sealed vcr ?2t Besides this case, no goncral business of impor vnco was done. A State entrai Committee had been appointed, but it was mud that some were distasteful on account of heir obnoxious white color, and though perfectly .?liing to affiliate as a man and a brother, it wis ot considered tho correct thing, and a motion ras made to reconsider. This created a windy iscussion among tho members, in which their nowlodgo of parliamentary tactics wa9 conspicu? as, tho chair ruling that a motion to lay on tho iblo was out of order. Nothing of any interest to he community was transacted, beyond a resolu? ten to adjourn, to meet in Columbia in July. Tho Convention has so far beeu an cvidout zzlo, as tho State at largo is entirely uurcpro cnted, and the few now in session aro principally rom ono section of the country.
