THE STATE UNION CONVENTION, SO-CALLED.-The - Convention of colored men, held on Tuesday night, at the Military Hall, adjourned yesterday to thc African Methodist Ohurch (Rev. Mr. CAIN'S), in Calhoun street. Beyond appointing a few com? mittees to draft a plat brm. and for other purposes tending toward a permanent organization, no business was done. This Convention was called by the Union Republican party of the colorod men. but it is hardly worthy of tho name, as thorn are only six Districts, out of tho thirty in tho State, represented, and only about fifty delegates pres? sent. The officers were appointed on Tuesday night, and are all colored, with two minor excep? tions, showing plainly that tho delegates have snubbed their white copatrtots, and hare no abiding faith in their Budden conversion to Union? ism. The colored delegates evinco a disposition to paddle their own canoe, without white assist? ance, and the few whitos who have insinuator! themselves into the association are evidently looked upon with distrust, as in many instance? their anteceden ta are not free from the taint of secession. EQUITABLE LIFE. -Tho year of 1866,says the Tnsur ance Monitor, was a remarkable one for this Com? pany ; its simple increase over tho year preceding equals in amount the entire businoBS of several or? dinary lifo companies. It insured in 18C6 no ?OSP than 7245 persons, pledging itself to pay to then heirs $30,072,450, and received $1,704,379 for pre? miums, and an income of $1,807,295, exclusivo of | ' deferred semi-annual and quarterly premiums and accrued interest, which swell its income to nearly $2,100,000, It acc;rdingly exhibits again over the totals nndor the Bamc headings of 1365 of 3868 pol? icies, (more than doubling tho number. ) of $16.' 458,550 in sum insured, or nearly 55 per cent of $803,796 in premium receipts, and an addition of $1,428,302 to total assets, or 46?percent, which now sum up to more than three million dollars, exceed? ing thoso of any other all cash company, except one, in the United States. Of New York compa? nies, it will bo perceived that, as to amount in? sured bi 1856, it ranges next to the Mutual Luc. and it claims that its policies are, on the avorago, larger in amount than those of any other insurance company. On fae first of February last it paid a ? dividend of profits exceedingly satisfactory lo all concerned, amounting to more than half a million dollars. THE HIBEBNICON.-MAO EVOX'S grand Panorama of Irish scenery, enlivened by gonuine Irish wit, attracted an overwhelming audience last night. The Hall was densely crowded, many of the spec? tators being natives of the Emerald Isle, who re? cognized at a glance the different scones portrayod. We have seldom seen a more happy combination of the panorama and the drama. Among the many interesting scenes rendered famous by song and story, we have tho "Giant's Causeway," and the very identical spot pointed out where Mrs. Fin McCule, "once upon a timo," was stilling a kettle full of rocks over a fire, and when asked by Fingal the great Scotch giant, what she was doing, she said she was cooking broth for her baby. "Do you give him such broth ?" says he. "Yes, indeed," replied Mrs. F., "and bard I find it, to get enough of it for him." "Oh," says Fingal, "if that's the cage, I believe I'll go back homc,r and at once Btopped across the channel again, glad to get off so easily. The success of tho exhibition has indaced the proprietor to continue his stay, and the Charles . ton public will have an opportunity to indulge bi ? hearty laugh on Friday and Saturday nights, tho Hall being engaged to-night for the Odd Fellows' concert. The "Giant's Causeway" is shown true to tho life. AN-E BLACKBEBBT.-Thero is, perhaps, none of the numerous street cries to be heard in this city that attract the attention sooner than the shrill sound announcing that blackberries are for salo. The venders are, usually, women who procure their sto k in trade from the neighboring inlands, and their unearthly yells are heard in all parts of the oity, often arousing the late sleeper, whoso ear Is startled by the prolonged cry used by the sable merchants. These women are au untiring class, pursuing their weary 'tramp for hours, enlivened only by the rapidity with which they send forth their musical notice to the public. The sun and heat offer no impediments to their progress, and the dew disappears from the berries and tboy be? come almost half cooked, before the wearied ear? lier consents to rest at somo quiet shady corner, where her voice can still be heard, at intervals, in the same doleful strains. There ore few fruits more luscious than the blackberry, and none equal to those thal arc raised near the city. These grow, principa, ly, on a low vine Uko the strawberry, and are much Largor and more juicy than tho high bush bony found in the up country. During the war - hen Jame? Island was leased by the soldiery, blackberries were an important article of diet, and wore hunted for assiduously. Many persons who were once tempe rary inhabitants of tbat blessed isle, mil re? member the relish given to tho army rations by the addition of a dish of blackberries. There arc few fruits that are more popular, and, as they grow in great luxor ance, the price is a mere trifle and in reach of all. THE FTBST ANNTVEBSABX OF THE PALMETTO BASE BALI. CLUB.-The Palmetto Base Ball Club was organized a year ago by a few gentlemen who were acquainted with the principles of the iranio, and who desired to see it introduced in this city. Originally comprising only twenty-two members, it has gradually grown in favor with tho public, and, though still but a bantling, it has moro than doubled that number, and promises a continued, vigorous and healthy growth. There aro few games that have, in a short time, acquired moro popularity than Base Bail. It luis boeome what it claans, a national game, and thore arc fer,- cities that are now without Base Boll Clubs. Tho Palmetto Club of Charleston is in no respect inferior to similar associations; it is governed by the rulos of the national association, and is com? posed of merchants and business moa of this city who are aware that the doctrine of all work and uo play is now obsolete. 'Ihoy meet even-Wednes? day and Saturday afternoons on tho Cil adel Green, and spend a few hours in tho invigorating sport. The time thus spent is not wasted, as tho carly closing ou Saturday afternoons is general, and tho dullness in business circles during tho summer allow i both employers and employees ampio timo for recreation. The Petit Juries were adjourned until to-day at II A. M., when the caso of thc United States vs. WILLIAM PROTHSO, for defrauding the Internal Revenue as a distiller, will bc tried. The petition of Wai. TENNENT, Esq., to bo ad? mitted into practice in tho United States Courts of | South Carolina., was presented by W. E. ROBBERY.-On Tuesday night eomo thiove* broke into the storo of Mr. HOFFMAN, at tho corner of Lamboll and King atrocts, by breaking tho sky? light over thc door, and succeeded in carrying off aoven! watches and other articles of value. They had first endeavored to obt tin an entrance by dig? ging around tho house, but failiug in tina entered ia the manner described. Tho detectives were at once notified, and by last night tho partios were arrested and committed, tho Bhocs ot' ono of thc Llueves, which ho bad left behind, being identified. Lieut. HENDRICKS has arrostod twelve persons sus? pected of boing implicated in thc various robberies recently committed, and has consigned them to jail, where they will remain until their cases cnn be examined into. They are all old offenders and weJ known to tho police authorities. FATAL ACCIDENT.-Tho report that there were quantities of old iron still around tho ruins of Fort Sumter, have attracted many poisons to that spot to collect tho fragments of shot and sholl, in order to dispose of them in tho city. On Monday morning last, throe men, JAMLB ROURKE, Anana and REYNOLDS, left tho city in a small boat for tho purpose of collecting old iron in the ncigborhood of Sumter. They succeeded in obtaining a boat load, but boing detained at Fort Sumter on account of tito storm, Mr. ROURKE en? deavored on Wednesday afternoon to extract tho powder from a sholl. Tho party were on tho break? water of the fort engaged in this work, when about 5 P. M. the snell on which Mr. ROURKE was labor? ing exploded, tearing his right logoff near the thigh, and throwing it into thc water fifty yards from tho fort. Tho unfortunate mun died in a few minutes af tor the sad occurrence, and his body was brought to tho city by his companions. Mr. ROURKE leaves a wife and four children. Tho music-loving community of Charleston, by reference to tho programme published in another column, will soo that tho Concert of to-night wil! be equal to any of a similar nature that has been given in the city.
