TUESDAY MORNING, JANUARY 1, 1807. LOCAL MATTERS. To OUR SITJSORIUKKS.-We wou'd cull Hie1 atten? tion of those who aro indebted lo us throughout tho country, that thc obi year ii? closing and their accounts aro uot yet ficltloJ. Tho price of sub? scription is not largo, and will not bo missed from their plothoric pockets. Thc first of January ha? long been celebrated as a d ty set apart for closing old accounts, and wo would not harp our friends depart from this time-honored custom. Money is the motive power of every enterprise, ?nd news? papers aro no oxcoption, and wo respectfully ask our country subscr.bers to cash up and commenco the now year with a clear record. NEW YEAR'S DAV.-To-day being tho first of tho year, in accorda nco with a time-honored custom no paper will bo issue d from this ofiico to-morrow. A hobday in a printing oftico is rare, aud all, from the Devil to the Editor, will enjoy tho opening of the year, and they each and severally wish all mauy happy returns of tho same. "THE BLACK CROOK" has our thauks for his kindly New Tear's visit. J. PERONNEAU OutnEi", Esq., has been appointed by His Excellency Governor ORR a Notary PubUc for Charleston District. ASHLEY ENCAMPMENT, NO. 3,1. 0. 0. F.-At a re? gular meeting of tin's Encampment, held on Mon? day evening, 10th inst., tlio following ofliccrs wore duly elected to servo for the ensuiug tenn: Patriarch W. F. DUNLAP. C. P. Patriarch J. E. MEYER, li. P. Patriarch WM. CREASER. S. W. Patriarch Q. KRUSE. J. W. Patriarch L. C. LOYAL. Scribe. Patriarch W. E MILLIGAN. Treasurer. CORONER'S INQUEST.-Mr. EUGENE L. ADAMS, the sufferer by tho late accident on tho Stroot Railway, died from the injuries received on that occasion. At an inquest held by Magistrate KANAPAUX dur? ing the absence of Coroner WHTTINO, the following verdict was returned : 'That said EUGENE L. ADAMS came to his death from a wound received in his head on Wednesday, thc 10th inst., from thc running away of a pair of horses attached to the 1 Street Railroad cars, aud tho iury attach no blame to the employees of said road." THE STREET RAILROAD.-Thc Coroner's Jury summoned to decide thc cause of Mr. E. L. ADAMS' death have exonerated tho Street Railroad from all blame. While wc deploro the melancholy accident, it is still a matter of rojoicing to know that tho unfortunate youth did not come to his death by any carelessness on tho part of tho em? ployees of tho road. Such an accident is liable to any similar corporation, and we fcol convinced that the greatest caro was talion to provont any occur? rence of this sort. Tho rules aud regulations of the railroad aro clearly defined, and, as far as wo know, have been fully obeyed ; but neither the drivers or conductors aie ablo to guard against such accidents as that which caused thc death of Mr. ADAMS. AH ACT OP HEROISM.-On last Friday, whilo Mr. yf. CREASER, of this city, was proceeding ou board of the steamer Adele, the gangway plank beeame detached from thc vessel and Mr. C. slipped and fell between he boat and tho wh?rf. Although an expert swimmer, the circumscribed space prevent? ed him exorcising himself, and he was drawn down by the suction of the vessel. Mr. WM. C. REDD, the chief officer of tho steamer, noticing the dis? aster, immediately went to tho rosene, and it is owing to his humane efforts an i timely assistance that Mr. CREASER was saved. By grasping a friend? ly arm and lowering himself to tho water's edge he was enabled to seize Mr. C. as he was about to sink for the last timo. Mr. REID'S act was ono of personal daring, for he was aware that thc drown? ing struggles of Mr. CREASER would probably pull him down. SOUTH CAROLINA RAILROAD BONDS.-Thc Audi? tor of tho South Carolina Railroad, ht anothor column of THE NEWS this morning, announces that the Company is prepared to pay all tho inter? est duo on thefr coupons for January, 18C7. Tho foreign debt of $2,000,000 has been similarly pro? vided for in London. Wc arc sincerely glad to be able to record this. Tho business of the Com? pany is Bteadidly improving, os our readers may have noticed, from thc veiw largo receipts of cotton daily published for some weeks past. On Saturday last no less than 1714 bales reached Charleston over this road. The South Carolina Railroad Company ha vo had a Jong and tough struggle with tho bequest of debt and destruction left them by thc closing of the war. But its friends will bo p cased to loam that tho damages to road, depots, station houses, bridges and rolling stock, has been generally repaired, and that too without adding by loans to tho debt of the Company, which, liko many individu?is, put its shoulders to tho wheel and worked out-no thanks to HERCULES. The stockholders, wc take it, have coucluded to be just (to others) before thoy can afford to bo generous (to themselves). Another six months may put them in a position to treat themselves once moro to a semi-annual dividend. We should be glad to record similar success of all our Rail? road Companies. MAYOR'S COURT, December 31.-Three men, who had got into a fight'at the solicitation of John Bar? leycorn, Esq.. at a low dow n bar-room, but who ?were stopped before much harm was done, wero brought up, and two of thom were fined $2 each, and the other discharged. A belligerent young man, who got drank on Sun? day, and was searching about for some one to tread on his coat tail, was fined $3. An individual, who no doubt is looking forward to an 'Indian Agency," wts fined $5 for practicing the war whoop in King street, at 2 o'clock in tho morning. Abram Simmons, a colored citizen, who had vis? ited the market on Saturday night with thc evi? dent intention of making a bald, and seoing nothing better within reach than a buggy and horse, the vehicle loaded with provision?, standing at the outside waiting for its owner, kindly con? sented to put up with these trilles, aud so jump lag in drove off, quito Lloasod with his speculation. .T.?e horse>nd buggy have 6?nco boon found, but tho "witties" which freighted thc enrriago aro mi est invenlus. Abram has boen turned over to a magistrate, who has sent him whoro ho rill find it more buggy than the market, and where he can exercise, his genius lor grabbing as much as he pleases. THE STREET BRIGADE.-On yesterday morning, ?hen we observed this flue body of men, properly aimed and accoutred, though uot in uniform, making their appearance on tho streets, it gave us great pleasuro-for wo wore under the impression that the crossings in tho business parta of the city ?were to be cleaned, and the loads of slimy mud which a person has to pass through when his affairs call him from one side of thc street to the other, were about to be removed with their shovels and spades. On Sunday, as well as on yesterday, the flagstones across tho streets wcro not only slippery, but exceedingly dangerous to pedestrians, who had to step with more than ordinary care to avoid a eevero fall: and wo would really suggest to the authorities that in such weather aa we have had lately that these spots should bc continually cleansed, and made safe for passers by. As the brigade seemed to bc anxious, on yesterday, to clear the mud and dirt from every other part than the crossings wo spealc of, it struck us that we should drop them this gentle hint to think of when they go in quarters. POSTPONEMENT.- Thc entertainment advertised to come off at Trinity Church this evening has been postponed on account of tho inclemency of the weather, until Friday night. Tickets can bc had in tho meantime ut Profosspr HOWIES' Book Store, King street. . F. C. BARBER & SON.-Thc attention of our readers is requested to the card of this Augusta firm, published hi otu1 issue of to-day. The senior is so well known in Charleston, as possessing business qualities of a most superior land, and withal is so gonial and clever a man, in all of which, j ?we believe, his junior resembles him. that we only intimate their qualities, whilo for others we would, j perhaps, have to write a long communication. -o "HAT HALL,"-STEELE'S New Year Circular, ; which is published this morning, wo aro satisfied ; .will attract the attention of all of our reade's, who j lt will please to hear of ins prosperity. His efforts ! to benefit the public by tho importation of tho i best of head coverings; :iud disposing of them at ! low prices, deserves not only tho thanks of the j people who wear hats, but a good share of public patronage, and we certainly wish him a continu? ance of bis preseut aw :css. UNITED STATES COUBT.-Tho last coso against the schooner Aid for violation of nor charter-party waa heard and conclu Jed yostorday. Judge BEVAN nos reserved his decision. -o MISDEMEANOR.- As ?oi?o gonllonion wore pass? ing along Anson a.root, noar Wentworth, they wore saluted by a glass bottle, which narrowly missed their hoads ami broke on the pavement. A Kew Year's frolic of this sort might be attended with .."erious danger, and we would warn tho perpetra? tors that tho police are on tho qui vioe for all such performers on the bottle. TEMPUS Foorr.-Wo tako no noto of timo but by its loss. Such, no doubt, was ?he exclamation of many who looked up at St. Michael's clock yes? terday morning, and found it declaring to thc I world that it was but throo, who:, numerous I watches of better morals staled positively that ten ? was thu hour. Soiuetlung was evidontly wrong, for St. Michael's waa nevor known to be so orratic in its movements, and the business rorld of Broad stroet stood aghast on learning that it was after? noon before they had commenced business. Mr. ROUSE, the able horologist, was immediately called upon, and at last accounts he was busily engaged in greasing tho refractory hands. Our grey-hair? ed friend, 13GC, bas tried many plans to delay his demiso, but this is decidedly the neatest dodge we have hoard, and ono that might almost cheat death himself. But the flat has gone forth, and to-day will not only soo a now yea?, bat a reconstructed dook, whose wheels will move gaily with tho, growth of our young friend, '67. GUANO.-Mr. J. N. ROBSON, of No. C2 East Bay. advertises several superior brands of Guano, io which he invites tho attontion of merchants and planters. The guanoes which ore now offered for role have been fully analyzed by Professor C. W. SHEPPARD, of the Medical College, and have met with the approbation of thotte planters who havo mode a trial of their virtues. To GET WORSTED ia not usually considered a dosirablo predicament; but there is a time for all things, and in thea? timea of giving and receiving gifts, you may get worsted and be tho better for it. This paradox will cease to be such the moment any of om- fair readers will pay a visit to Mr. P. SCHUCK MAN'S old aud w ll known stand, in King street, opposite Hasel. Hore they will find the greatest variety of fancy wool ever imported into thia city. Every possible color, every shade, and every shadow of a shadow is here, all systemat? ically classified, and can be had instanter. Long experience alono in this specialty could givo Mr. S. this Ano connoisseurship. UNDrnwErrEBs' AGENCY.-It will be soen, from a notice in our paper to-day, that tho firm of COL BURN, HOWELL & Co. has beon dissolved, and that Mr. J. H. COLBDBN and 8. S. HOWELL will con? tinue tho business as formerly, at No ll Broad stroet. Mosers. COLBVSN & HOWELL'S cord will also be econ in our issue of to-day. A list of tho companies they reproaent aro given, which, with each ono's capital, tho whole footing np an aggre? gate of over three m?lion dollars. The com? panies are all known to be first-class; in fact, it is the established custom of the agenta at thia point to represent none other than respectable and re? sponsible companies. Tho woU known character of Mr. COLBDBN and Mr. HOWELL, though, would be, if the companies thoy represented wero un? known, sufficient guaran tee that whatever they an? nounced as reliable waa such. Trusting that Messrs. COLBURN & HOWELL may continue to ro ceivo thc largo share of patronage extended to tho old concern, wo heartily wish them, aa well, a hap? py New Yoar. NURSERY SOAP.-Mothers will find COLGATE'S AROMATIC VEGETABLE SOAP the very nicest for in? fants that can bo obtained. It is a vory delicate soap, yet vory cloansing, and possesses the soi toning and soothing qualities which peculiarly adapt it to the uso of children in a very high degroe,-the vege? table oils being combined with glycerine. Drug? gists have it. 1 MABSDEN'6 Pectoral Balm is cortain in effect. KING & CASSIDEY, Agents. GOODRICH, WTNEMAN & CO., Agents. PUBLIC SPEAKERS AND SINOEBS will find "Brown's Bronchial Troches" beneficial in clearing the voice boforo spoaking or singing, and relieving the throat after any unusual exortion of the vocal or? gans, having a peculiar adaption to affections which disturb the organs of speech. For Coughs ar d Colds the Troches aie effectual. Ir TEETH COULD SPEAK thoy would orton reproach their owner?. "We cannot clean ourselves," would be the cry of many a neglected set, "and aro going to ache and ruin, simply for the lack of a daily brushing with the FEAOBANT SOZODONT, tho only known means of preserving us." But aa tho Teeth cannot speak, thc Pros muat speak for them. tua2 Jonuary 1 TnE ATMOSPHERE OE LOVE is a pure, sweet breath. Its un. ateady temperature greatly aggravates dyspepsia, and lets very unfavorably upon that sensitive organ, thc liver. The alternation of frost and thaw keeps the pores Df the body continually opening and contracting, and the result is a condition of the system favorable to the action of tho atmospheric virus which produces intermittent fe? vers. Hence a PROTECTIVE MEDICINE like HOSTETTER'S STOMACH BITTERS is especially needed in tile winter mouths. Thc effect of thia great CONSTITUTIONAL INVIO uiuST, in rendering oven tbe feeblest frame Impervious to all malarious influences, ls a grand fact demonstrated by the uniform orperionce of a quartor of a century. As a stomachic, an anti-bilious medicine, and a preventive aud cure of Fever and Aguo, it ls the ONE THINO NEED? FUL, which none who value the preservation of heBlth eau afford to do without. THE SICK, WHEN AT DEATH'S DOOR, regret that they did not take tho right antidote at thc right timi. Thousands wbo are now suffering from the early twinges of lirer complaint and dyspepsia, will bs prostrate on sick beds a month hence, if they do uol ar? rest the mischief at once. Nothing is more easy. A course of the purest and best vegetable tonic and alt*" rative known in modern pharmacy-HOSTETTER'S STOMACH BITTERS-will restore the digestive organs to thoir full vigor, and bring tho disordered liver into a condition of perfect health, as certainly as sunshine dis? sipates tho morning vapors. Fever and Ague, too, is at ouco broken up by this powerful antidote to all miasma? tic diseases, strengthen the system with the Bitters, and you may defy ali the complaints which prevail at this In clement season. 6 De?emb?r 31 GROCERY AND MISCELLANEOUS, COHN, FLOUK, BACON, Arc.
