TUESDAY MORNING, NOVEMBER 13, 1866. Tho~San Antonio Herald Bays the headquarters of the Department of Texas will he removed by Goneral Heintzelman front Galveston to San Anto? nio, on accoimt of the operations on the border. THE Board of Education o? Now York have voted to approve the report of its finance committee, al? ready published, appropriating; $2,522,000 for tho support pf schools during the year 1867. Tho foreign papers speak? of the-continued .ill? ness of Count Bismark, which they describe as a . prostration; accompanied by loss or appetite. Pri? vate lottor? so far confirm filis, as to speak of an attack of paralysis. The TesaB Legislature has got through its busi? ness, and ?8 ready to adjourn. Nearly all the im? portant acts have alroady been passed, such as the stay law, the laws reorganizing tho District Courts, the Supremo Court and tho County Courts, an ap? prentice law, a l?.w governing labor contracts, &c. The votes which have been thus far taken in the several Annual Conferences of the Southern Metho? dists, indicate the ratification, by a large majority of the proposed change of the name of the Church to Episcopal Methodist Church, and ?ho proposed introduction of lay representation into the General Conferences.- ' < .- t-i---; The health of Prince Pierre Napoleon Bonaparte has lately caused some uneasiness to bis friends. Having been Buffering from carbuncle, bo was ope? rated upon at Aix-le-Bains, but without effect. On his return to Auteuil Dr. Nelaton again performed an operation, and hopes are now entertained that the Prince will soon be convalescent. King Victor Emmanuel has just instituted a new order of knighthood, to be called tho Order of tho Leone di St. Marco, according to some; that of the Italian Lion, according to others. It is to take rank immediately after the Order of the Annun? ziata, which last is only given to crowned heads, members of reigning houses, and generalissimos. WE loam from Le Nord that cholera has been very virulent in Belgium. Official statistics just published state that from the commencement of the epidemic-to the 16th of September, the num? ber of attacks have been 49,558, and tho number of deaths 27,840, or more than half the total number attacked. The population of Belgium is 4,940,570, eo that the scourge has carried oil 1-87 por cont, of the inhabitants. OHE Herr Ristnger, an architect, asked an au? dience of the Duke of Hesse-DandBtadt, his sov? ereign. His behavior awakening suspicion he was arrested, searched, and found in possession of a long doubl?-edged knife. In his rage he stabbed one of the policemen near him.' It is supposed that he meditated murdering the Duke, whose Austri? an leanings seem to have excited his revenge. MAINE the squirrels, red and gray, aro more numerous and bolder this year than ever bofore within the memory of the oldest inhabitants. The Bcaroity of nuts in the woods, or the prospect of .a I severe winter, or something else, drives them into towns and villages. The farmers complain bitterly ! of their depredations. They gnaw holes through j the roora and sides of their buildings, and make themselves a nuisance generally. A Louisville dispatch of the 8th instant says: The train leaving hero at five o'clock yesterday afternoon for Nashville, was maliciously thrown off the track at flinking Creek. The engineer was badly hurt, and at last accounts the fireman had not been found. The Adams Express oar, baggage car and smoking oar were burned, and the passen? gers are said to nave boen generally robbed. No ? passengers injured. Th? records of the Commissioners of Emigra? tion show that during the month of October 1V80 passengers arrived at the port of New York, 14.877 i of whom carno by steamers, and 4703 by Bailing vessels. Nine thousand of the number were from Germ i ny and about 8000 from Liverpool. Sixteen hundred have gone to Illinois, ?00 to Massa? chusetts, 600 to Michigan, 600 to Missouri, 685 to New Jersey, 1317 to Ohio, 2214 to Pennsylvania, 567 to Wisconsin, and 8471 have remained in New York. None came South. Why? The Yale catalogue for the new college year is just out. Its summary of students is as follows: In theology, 80; in law, 26; in medicine, 31; in phi? losophy and arts, 122; total 209. Seniors, 101; juniors, 115; sophomores, 182; freshmen, 162 total, 500; aggregate, 709. The libraries of the college, exclusive of tho 2500 volumes of the Oriental Society, contain 77,500 books, besides a large number of pamphlets. The faculty and instructors of tho college consists of the -president, thirty-five professors, nine tutors, four instructors, a librarian, and a demonstrator of anatomy.' . - ? MOST DEPLORABLE IGNORANCE.-A recent issue of the British Quarterly Review contains the fol? lowing astounding-nay, almost incredible revela? tions of the ignorance which existe among some sections of the British community: in Birmingham thirty-two persons, averaging more than twelve years of age, including a young man of twenty, and two young women, could not tell the Queen's name. The commonest and simplest object of nature, such as flowers, birds, i fishes, mountains and tho Boa, were unlmown. Some thought London waa a country, one that it was in the exhibition ; a violet was said to be a pretty bird ; a primrose a red rose ; lilac also a bird ; but wheather a robin or an eagle wore birds none could say; some know-not what a river meant, or where snow comes from ; and a cow in a picture was pronounced to be a hon. Multitudes of these poor children can never have seen a prim? rose by the river's brim, or hoard the song of tho lark. The editor of the Manitowoc Tribune has been in Milwaukee, and in his paper of tho 1st inst, says : Never were we more impressed with the pros? perity of tho Stato than wo were a day or two ago ui Milwaukee. The improvements going on there aro really astonishing, and it enforces the belief that Wisconsin is to be one of tho greatest Stales in the Union; for cities seldom goahoad of the sur? rounding conntry-tkoy are generally behind. Hero are a few figures showing some of the amounts expended on new buildings during tho ' present year : 1 Bolling mllL.?300.O0O 1 flour mill.?130,000 8 flour mills. 116,000 2 breweries. 40,000 2 distilleries. 80,000 1 block (Brodhead's). 45,000 1 church (Baptist)..".. 35,000 ? churches.;. 75,000 28 business blocks on East Water street. 500,000 1,000 private residences, from ?600 to ?20.000 eacb. . This is a fair showing for the City of Bricks. Wo hope hor prosperity may never Jbo less. .J MERCHANT TAILORS, Ko. 18G KI JJ G STREET, THIRD BOOR ABOVE ffORLBEGK'S ALLEY.
