TUESDAY MORNING, NOVEMBER 13, 1866. IS CRINOLINE OUT OF FASHION? [Paris [October 22) Correspondence London Morning Post.] I meet in tho a!roots of Paria, and sometimes at an evoniug reception, a toilette- of tho period of the First impire; short-waisted, and certainly there can bo no crinoline or iron-hooped anything under a somewhat scanty robe, such aa Lady Jersey dauend in at Almauk's in tho days of George IV. You eau see thc pretty feet, and some ide* may bo arrived afc as to how nature has sculptured the whole of tho graceful female form. It is surely a pleasant thing to contemplate ladies' feet again. For tho last ten yoars, if one writes history correctly, wo mu3t confess we have seen little of that pretty featuro of female loveliness. This bas'been a decided loss,' for nature has wise? ly provided that youug people should fall in love with other's feet and ankles as well as their eyes. At thc promenade in the Bois yon meet with ladies whose dresses gracefully respond to the movements of the frame; and certainly there can? not be any cunningly conceived substructure of steel and textile substances under that empire style of costume. I therefore conclude that th ero are ladies of fashion moving about in the most re? fined society honestly without orinoline; but they are not yet a majorify, You find most ladie,?, on the contrary, wearing dresses which.spread out at the bottom, and show a tram which begins to be aa long as those worn at court, From the waist downwards this ever-spreading trailing robe must - be supported by some material. Is it crinoline ? Is it juba in another shape, or is it a mass of clustering underclothing of cotton or linen ! How am I to find out that ? You cannot with propriety ask a lady what she wears under the external ?ilk -\ or satin (auch was ever intended to be a joalous secret), And take upon us tho mystery of thinga, As if we were God's apies, as said King Lear on a similar courtlv question. It would bo exclusively mean to ask * tho lady's maid privately and confidentislly of what under? neath mate) ial her mistress is composed. How aro you to find out' I have watched sublimely grand ladies get out of a carriage, under the im? pression that the accident of events might enable ; one to form a pretty good opinion about thc pro-j eence of crinoline. But no japes-cages ever turned j up; tho robe Mia into a monotonous spread, traill on tho ground, aiid is as irritating to surrounding hunnn natnro as tho old crinoline nuisance. Gontlemen have to dodge about in the drawing . room, and on the pathway of gardens and pirk*. Thoae dresses like tho old crinoline, to my knowl? edge h?ve oausod some mon to como out with wicked-oaths in French, and I do not seo why thia fashion should alao causo ladies to burn to death as in the earlier days of crinoline. In thc streets .of Pirie Some ladici ?ear a dress which appears to bo crino'ineleas, uutil 'it suddenly aud abruptly epreads out at tho butorn as if a tingle hoop were employed. What is this? A windy day afc tho seaside might relieve one's doubting mind. I strongly suspect this is tho last ring-a horrid cage. If crinoline is expiring, it djos hard in Paris. The ladies at the markets still' woar crino? line, and so do the ladies of tho kitchen, therefore I enspoot crinoline is hovering still about in all classes of society. Now, those interested in this momentous question will say, why don't you go to the faehiou books for information ? Ask un audience of M-^-e W-fc in the Rue de la Paix. Do you think you-can say anything positive after hil this? One magazine of the fashions tells ns "Hating our impressions from certain high indi? cations, wo think we go so far as to declare that a gradual abandonment of crinoline is taking place in all classes of society." You then turn to the colored plates, sud there you find a dress worn by a lovely oreature, the bottom of which is occupy? ing neatly tho wholo v,id'h of the plate. What keops out ita vast apreading proportions? As . vrhon you think bf time and eternity, or any other sublime subject, the mind wanders into dim con? fusion; . Let us see what LR Toilette de Paris : saya^-that is ah authority. It would bo absurd to . translate : "Doux genres bieu distincts caractori ; sent lea toilett?e; CMU? qui r?duit l'ampieur et la longueur dos robes est adopto pour les courses a pied, et l'autre genre qui admei avec une facilite extraordinaire toutes Ice exaggerations dana le sense oppose, est seul mierve arti toilet ea parees." *. . Do you not observe, ladies,- that here is th? same hesitation of whioh you complain in England ? Is ?it that tuero are no original and great mind? Just now in Paris ?a of old to exclaim--' This is tho fashion for Octobwr; wear it ali the world ?" If you ask me to sum up, my answer is, I bolter? crinoline it only hilf out, and aomcthing quite as bad it half in. Wo are probably passing t hrough n.pcrio'1 or truDsitioa. It will ba interesting for . some lime to coma to lcvk for tho cliy when huo?ani'y can write.-Crinolina fu?. FROM SOOTH AMEBIOA.-The fortunoB of wai" iii South America are dccidodly in favor of Lopez and tho Paraguayan. Tho la?t bnfcfclo, fought on Septombor 22, before the works afc Curuguaiy, was a positivo and damaging defeat for the allies. Their army waa driven back with heavy slaughter, and almost their onfcire fleet disablod and forced to retire. The present condition of tho allied army, and what i3 more important, alhed finances, do not Sromiso an carly advance against tho fonnidublo efencea of tho enemy. Tho alliance between Brazil, Uruguay,"and thb Argentino Confederation, ia also likely to bo forced apart by intestine divi? sions. The rumor that Franco stands behind Bra? zil, and dictates tho policy to be pursued, is thc firebrand which has produced tho conflagration in tho allied camp. In tho meantime, Lopez is strengthening his army by all tho means in his power, and fights with a courago and determina? tion not oasy to overcome. ?Cf tho albanco is dis? solved and the war abaudonod, tho chances aro .that tho peace bofcwoen Brasil, Uruguay and thc Argentine Confederation will not long be pro served. _ V CALITOB-SIA WINES.-The Solano (California) Pro33 gives an account of the principal vineyards in that county. Ono planter has about itftooii thousand vinca, part of which wore sot out in 18(50, tho rosfc in 1864. In thia vinoyard t-hore are some foreign varieties of which tho Muscat flourishes best, but tho California gi'apo predominates. Mr. Schultz will ranko this year about two thousand gallons of wine. Another linn of Germans have a vinoyard of about sixty acres on the sunny slope of tho SUBCOI Mountain. Thoy havo sixty thousand vinos, the California predominating, but foreign varieties doing well, with tho exception of tue Tokay. ThisN vineyard was planted in 185-1, and will produco this year over fifteen thousand gal? lons of wino. 'PREPARE FOE THE HOLIDAYS. EEMEMBER THAT FRED.
