Minter, ofjaarris oonnty, WAB lying at the pointof death, andwould not probably live an hour, flia disease, we sup? pose, was congestive chill Mr. Minter waa formerly the foreman of this office, and was well known to most of our citizens. He was a man of sterling uprightness and iuwg rity, and was a useful member of the community in which he lived. Without ostentation, he was a man of much intelligence and good judgment, a valuable and esteemed citizen, and exemplary iu all his private relations. Ho leaveH a widow and several children to mourn their great loss. [<:olnmbu;i Enquirer: DABING OUTRAGE BY A NKOKO.- On Thursday evening last, a i egro calling himself Peter Evana, secreted himself under the bed of Mrs. Dyer, re fiding in Ronert-ville, and but for bia timely dis bvery, woud have, no doubt, accomplished his hellish designs. On retiring to bod Mrs. Dyer discovered the negro, who immediately jumped upon ber and took ber bv the neck with the deaign of chnkin her. Mrs. Dyer atiuggled with the negro for several minutes, when she halloed for the police, a* d the negro immediately made off by jumping through the bed room window. The cry of police having been raised, several ef the neighbors flocked to the house and gave chase to the negro, whom they succeeded in arresting near thu corner of Wayne and Montgomery streets. On bringing the case jefore his Honor, it being one that nee edithe severeat penalty of the law, he turned it over to Judge Russell for prosecution. ' Savannah News. MURDER IN OGLETHORPE_We learn, from what may be considered a reliable source, that Dr. Watkins, living at Sandy Cross, in Oglethorpe, was murdered by a negro woman, a few days ago. We have been unable to learn any particulars. We understand that this woman killed another negro woman some time ago, for which she was tried I before the Freedmen's Bureau, in Augusta, and bj some means cleared. MAIL POUCH BROKEN OPEN.-On yesterday morning, about niue o'clock,'the through mail pouch from Columbus to Savannah was returned, broken open, to the post?nico. It had been found in the, ditch between th? j unctionjof the Muscogee Railroad with the Mobile aud" Girard Railroad, by a negro iu the employ of the Mus cogce Railroad, and by him handed over to the clerks of that corporation. The pouch had been regularly receipted for at the postoffice by J. B. Munroe,.route' agon V who has held mat position for some time, and who, we believe, was a Federal soldier. Beyond the fact that the pouch was regularly sent from tho postoffice, as the receipt of the route agent shows, and that it was found broken open, nothing is known.
