DEATH OF L. D. MINTEB.~W6 were pained to
learn, yesterday, thHt Mr. L. D. Minter, ofjaarris

Mr. Minter waa formerly the foreman of this
office, and was well known to most of our citizens.
He was a man of sterling uprightness and iuwg
rity, and was a useful member of the community
in which he lived. Without ostentation, he was
a man of much intelligence and good judgment, a
valuable and esteemed citizen, and exemplary iu
all his private relations. Ho leaveH a widow and
several children to mourn their great loss.

DABING OUTRAGE BY A NKOKO.- On Thursday
evening last, a i egro calling himself Peter Evana,
secreted himself under the bed of Mrs. Dyer, re
fiding in Ronert-ville, and but for bia timely dis
bvery, woud have, no doubt, accomplished his
hellish designs. On retiring to bod Mrs. Dyer
discovered the negro, who immediately jumped
upon ber and took ber bv the neck with the deaign
of chnkin her. Mrs. Dyer atiuggled with the
negro for several minutes, when she halloed for
the police, a* d the negro immediately made off by
jumping through the bed room window.
The cry of police having been raised, several ef
the neighbors flocked to the house and gave chase
to the negro, whom they succeeded in arresting
near thu corner of Wayne and Montgomery streets.
On bringing the case jefore his Honor, it being
one that nee edithe severeat penalty of the law,
he turned it over to Judge Russell for prosecution. '
Savannah News.
MURDER IN OGLETHORPE_We learn, from what
may be considered a reliable source, that Dr.
Watkins, living at Sandy Cross, in Oglethorpe, was
murdered by a negro woman, a few days ago. We
have been unable to learn any particulars. We
understand that this woman killed another negro
woman some time ago, for which she was tried I
before the Freedmen's Bureau, in Augusta, and
bj some means cleared. A dirk, or knife, was,
used in both instances.-Elberton Gazette. .
THE ELECTION .YESTERDAY.- The ?lection for j
Mayor yesterday, to All the vacancy occasioned by
the resignation of Hon. Jas. T. Gardiner, passed
off quietly. There had been several candidates
announced, but all of them withdrew, except Mr.
Foster, who was eleoted. Mr. Foster has had con?
siderable experience in municipal affairs, having
been member of Council some eight or ten years,
i nd will make a capital Mayor. We congratulate j
him und tho community on bis election to office,
and hope that bia administration will be entirely
successful. We give the official result in another

There were no lees than eleven candidates for
the Coronership ot Savannah. Dr. R. P. Myers

The Journal aud Messenger, of the 18th, says j
the construction train on the Fort Gaines Branoh
of J&? Southwestern Road, ran over Charles
Ro?7s, a deaf and dumb man, in a few hundred
vu rds of the depot at Cuthbert, on laat Satur jay

and the care could not be stopped till'they had
passed the body about ten feet.
CONVENTION OF DBAYMEN.-There was a council
of diaymen on tue City Hal) lot, a few days ago.
The scene ia said to have been a rich one.

The meeting adjourned after a motion was passed

MAIL POUCH BROKEN OPEN.-On yesterday
morning, about niue o'clock,'the through mail
pouch from Columbus to Savannah was returned,
broken open, to the post?nico. It had been
found in the, ditch between th? j unctionjof the
Muscogee Railroad with the Mobile aud" Girard
Railroad, by a negro iu the employ of the Mus
cogce Railroad, and by him handed over to the
clerks of that corporation. The pouch had been
regularly receipted for at the postoffice by J. B.
Munroe,.route' agon V who has held mat position
for some time, and who, we believe, was a Federal
soldier. He ia no relation of the family of that
name living here. The vnegio who drives the
wagon Bays he and Mr. M. found the Backs all
right when put on the Muscogee cars Tuesday
night. If ao, the bag muat have been thrown off
at the point where it was picked up.
Beyond the fact that the pouch was regularly
sent from tho postoffice, as the receipt of the
route agent shows, and that it was found broken
open, nothing is known. The bag contained letters
and papers from Columbus and points weat for
Savannah; ttie couru iee around tbat city and East
FloiMj?*. It contained probably a hundred or
iuor<*Tettera, some thirty or forty of whioh were
from Columbua. None from here were registered.
There were several drafts, but their payment has
been stopped, lt ?B not known whether the pouoh
contained money. Ihe thieves bent the hasp a
?rood deal trving to prize open the lock, and at
ast broke the leather strap. N > papers or letters

in the pouch was a copy of the Weekly Sun, di?
rected to Jacksonville, Florida. Mr. Munroe, the
route agent, returns from Macon this morning,
