MONDAY MORNING. JUNE 25, 18CG. SHALL WE HAVE A MONEY CRISIS ? Time was when ouo natiou would bocomo en richotl by tho folly of another, and noutrals fat toned on lim slaughter or bolligorouts. Wo will uot say that this is ovon yot altogothor dono away with; for numorons facts of tho last dosen years would contradict mich au assertion. But such is the intimato commercial union now of tho sovoral -tates of tho oarth, that tho daily routine of tho Exchnngo cannot bo disturbed in any ono country without communicating a corresponding shock to the Bourse of ovory commercial city on tho globo. Tho United States is, perhaps, moro independent of other nations-owing to its vaBt torritory and variety of internal oxchanges and productions than any Europoan Powor. Yet wo, too, aro linked in commorco and immigration with all the world, and especially with Europo. She buys our cotton, broadsluffs, tobacco and machinery, and during tho last four years has boon an enormous pur chaser ol' American Bocuritios. She also fur niubcB us with our most valuable imports-tho immigration of substantial farmors and strong la borers. | Germany, it will bo romeniberod, waa a heavy buyer of Federal securities. Tho hoavy discount on tho par valuo of tho bonds proved irr?sistible to the Hamburg and Frankfort bankers and their customers. The first impulse of tho Gormans aud Italians is (as it was hore in our war) to con vert everything into gold. Tho Governments de mand gold for buying war material, and as a con soquonco a groat drain of the precious mot?is en sues from tho great contro of exchanges-London -which ii naturally felt hero. Apart from tho rise of gold occasioned by speculation, thoro can be no doubt that tho fear of a European war has le8seued tho valuo of the dollar to ovory man, wo man aud child in America. Emigration also, with its golden tide, which has been larger the burt year than for many years, must, if war on suos, bo diminished. Tho German Governments will forbid their subjects from leaving the country at such a time. Wo must fool then, and some what severely, a European war. But there are moro favorablo aspects of the subject which will soon reveal themselves. Tho continental people will bo, indood, poo rer, but they must live, even if tho Governments sup port larger numbers of thom in the armies. They must havo our cotton, and may evon de mand our broadstufis, from the cessation of pro duction at home. After tho first impulso of panie to hoard, or to convert into gold, the second sober thought will come of demand for safe securities, delivered from all the eventualities of thi s war. The bonds of two great nations-tho Austrian and Italian-are already, before the opening of hos tilities, below 40, and will undoubtedly, if tho war should last two yoars, bo worthless. Prussian naDor is __-_ ??-???vi?, v_v i?. I-"i,_" tftn per cent. Gold is dangorous to possoss in time of invasion, as wo havo tho best reason to know ; for where were thore evor gold diggers like S HER MAN'S boya ? Had they not " divining rods" with thom? A paper-bond is leas often plundered or confiscated, and can bo moro oasily concealed. Tho peasantry are seoking for Amorica n securi ties, Bays the Now York Times. " This will con tinue and increase, if our own financial cours? is wiso hero ; the savings of the Gorman population will bo placed, to a great extent, in United States bonds. The same thing will be truo also of England. A vast amount of capital will be accumulating there, which used to seek invest ment on the Continent. It will now soaroh for channels at a distance from the soono of hostili ties, and will probably turn to securities so BSfo and profitable as the Amoriean. Wo shall soon hear of a substantial rise in Five-twenties in the British market. Two of tho continental countries are just about repudiating spooie payments. The inevitable effect of this is to force the gold out of the country to Groat Britain and Franco, whore the cessation of panic, and restored business with the increased supply, will soon bring money down to its normal rates and relievo us here. Large amounts of cotton soon to go out, and perhaps othor exports, will help us still farther. We may secure some new branches in the carrying trade in tho approaching struggle. In tho moantimo we aro at peace; all branches of production aro in wonderful bloom; we only need a greater contrac tion of currency to stop the depreciation of our paper and bring the dollar near ita real value, and we are growing steadily in substantial wealth. Tho great Europoan war, though it may shock, will not essentially damage na." We doubt whether we shall get off quite as easy, as is chalked out hero. Ono thing is sure, how over, that the dread and anticipation of war, ia its effect on the money market of the world, is worse than war itsolf. So perhaps after the bravo Northerns and hot Southrons shall be fairly under way lu their work of mutual destruction, our greenbacks will go baok to where Seerotary MC CULLOCH would havo them. A DEPRAVED TASTE. The Northern and Northwestern papers, during the last two or three weeks, have boon filled with the particulars of tho oxcoution of PKOBST. This name, euggeetive of all that ia disgustingly fero oioue, more particularly shows tho morbid tasto whioh impels tho dopravod mind to gloat ovor tho details of vice and its cons?quences. At the time of the DEEM sr, murder tho Northern press teom od with descriptions of tho crime, and all the minutest circumstances attending it; and now that the ropulsivo criminal has mot with bia just (-?sorts, his last words, and the history of bia last moments, aro heralded abroad, all over the land, with as much eclat as thoso of Gon. SCOTT. What j 1-OB-i did, and what PKOBST said, was actually ?v. lographed over the wholo country as if it was | matter of univoraal interest. Tho prosa that j panders to this morbid taste is in a largo measure responsible for ita oxistonce. Thore is something radically defectivo in communities whore suoh is the prevailing standard of tasto. Tho doloterious effect of Buoh publications is chiefly felt by the young. The improesiblo mind of childhood is straok with wondor by the startling doods of bold criminals, and surprise and admira tion are too noar of kia. The habit of roading of crime makes it familiar, and what was once repul sivo and terrifying soon ceases to bo so. Tho fatal charm possosaed by crime is too ofton de monstrated In criminal courts aud polioo rocords. t is impossible to caleula to tho number of orimi ?Sttla-not originally forced to such a caroor by hoir ncccssitios, nor oven by the powor of groat omptation-but who comoionced their criminal .ou re o in oarly lifu from a spirit of ambition. It nay bo said that only tho ignorant anti unedu ;atoil could possibly bo ambitious tobecomo groat .hicvos, great robbers, groat murderers, or groat i-illnins of any kind; butunfortunatoly Iho ignor ant ami uneducated form tho groat mau? of every :i>mmuuity. lu cousiilering a groat qno_t ion of right and wrong, thoroforo, thoy cannot by any moans be thrown out of tho calculation. Apart from thoir ilcloterious moral effect, how over, would it not bo bottor, as a moro inattor of propriety anil cultivate.! taeto, to oxclutlo all these criminal histories from tho public Journale? riiat John Smith, who killed Thomas Jonen, has beon hung for murdor, and that John Brown, who broke into John Thompson's stoio, has becu sent to the ponitentiary for life,-aro mattorB of gene ral information and publio interest, becauso thoy uro ovidenccs of tho enforcement of tho laws for tho benefit of poacoful and unoffending citizens; but what Smith says on the scaffold, ana a pichir? :if Mr. Brown's lifo in tho ponitontiary, aro no mat ter of concorn to tho world at largo, can do no possiblo good, ai'tl may bo tho cause of untold crimo and Buffering. The namo of the offonder, hie crimo and punish ment, aro iu moat instancos all that need be puu liahoil, nnd when moro is absolutely necessary, it should be given in as fow words as possible. Po lice gazottes are published to pandor to tho pru rient imaginations of that part of tho population particularly interested in such descriptions. Those details should bo confined to polico gazottos, and tho nowspaporB which go to tho firoeidee of ro spoclablo people should not bo pollutod with such trash. Above all, don't telegraph matters at onco so unimportant and so disgusting. But far moro obscene, disgusting and immoral than oven the most prurient descriptions, aro the mammoth wood cuts, setting forth all these sconce. TII?B, during tho past few years, has be conio a regular institution in the United States. HAnrEn's Journal of Civilization, par excellence, the moral and would-bo religious paper of the land, loada in this reprohcnBiblo course. Its circulation appears to depend upon these ques tionable illustrationB. In our opinion, it is not fit to enter tho family circle. Although trite, we cannot rofrain from oteo again printing POPE'S well known linee: "Vico is a monster of so frightful mien, As to bo hated, ncedi bat to be seen, Yet seen too oft, familiar with her face, Wo first endnre, theo pity, then embrace."
