We have not uncov ered how to square the circle, nor solved the diffi cult problem of perpetual motion. Wo have, nevertheless, made an important discovery. We have found out where to get a first-rate brand of Claret wino, at a moderate price. Borne years ago we spent a few months in the French capital; we therefore know capital claret when we see it and taste it. We hove found some Claret that brings to mind tho most pleasant rcminiecences of our European tour. The Claret is good-the brand is "St. Macairo"-the place where it may be procurod is at GKOIIOE W. DISTINGUISHED ARRIVAL.-It gives us pleasure to announce that tho celebrated optician, Prof. M. BERNHARDT, of Berlin, Prussia, and late of New York, has arrived in our city, and intends to re main with us a short time, l'rom the handsome testimonials whioh he received from- the medical faculty and clergy, not only of Charleston, but every other city that ho paid a visit to, as also from many of the most prominent statesmen in the Union, we infer that he is an adept in his profes sion, and therefore advise all iu need of artificial aid to their sight to call on Professor .BERNHARDT and procuro a pair of his excellent Australian crys tal spootacloB, which are pronounced superior to any others in use. CARDOZA, ESQ.-Wo had a visit yestorday from this Nestor of tho Bonthern press, and woro much pleased to find him bearing up so well bo noath tho burdon of four-sooro years. Mr. 0. baa boon living in Charleston eixty-fivo years, during fifty of which ho was connooted with the prose. Ho assumed editorial charge of tho Southern Patriot in 1816, and romained connooted with it till 1845, when ho founded tho Evening News. Sinco tho war ho has boon in Atlanta and Savan nah- ovor truo to his first lovo, still paying court to tho newspaper muse. Fow cavaliers so con stant. Ho is at present connoctod with tho Savan nah Herald, for which journal ho in now writing a series of letters from this city. As a matter of course, a mau who has lived as long as Mr. OAII DOZA, soon as much of lifo and society as ho has, must needs havo stored up mauy valuablo obser vations. An account of tho changos tho oity has undergono during two gonorations would bo of considerable interest to us youngsters. Gossipy anecdotes, from a personal intimato, about tho old mon eloquont, whom wo only know from read ing and hearsay, would bo oagorly roceived. This brings to mind tho intervals of comparative quiet in camp life. But what most reBombles th? tented field aro the canvas A's stretched on tho southwestern part of tho Groen. Two companies of tho 8th Infantry, lately from Baltimore and Harper's Ferry, aro hore encamped, awaiting orders. Passing thoro and seeing them engaged in the various castrai employments, usual to such a condition of domicilo, makes us wonder whether we are really and truly in the heart of Charleston and not on tho Chickahominy; and whether JOHN SON'S proclamation actually did say that tho war is at end. Thoso who have nover seen a livo camp, if any such thoro bo amongst us, may now on joy the gratification, and at a much cheaper rate, than did their moro fortunate (?) friends. THE COLLEGE LIRRART.-A few days sinco wo went into the College Campus, on George Btreet, and, invited by tbo politeness of the Librarian, Dr. L. A. FRAMPTON, we extended our visit to tho Library. The building, a few years ago, was specially constructed for this purpose, and is very well adapted for it. The shelving and alcoves aro well arranged ; there is abundance of light, and, in fact, everything that could bo desired in such a place. Such it was before the war. Such, how ever, is not its present condition. Sholls plough ed their course from roof to cellar. One passed right through the table and floor beneath it. These injuries have not yet been repaired. Quito a largo number of bronzo busts of dis tinguished persons ad'>rn the gallery, and, strange to say, not ono of these emerile was harmed. Not over half the sholvos are filled at present. The old College Library and the valuable addi tion mado by Dr. FRAMPTON'S donation have not yet arrived. They are in Camdon, we believe. The books now on the shelves aro all from the late MITCHELL KING'S library, and to the scholar, wo doubt not, form tbo most attractive part of the entire collection. It is rich in classic and pa triotio literaturo, works on antiquities, history, ethnography aud philosophy. French literaturo is very well represented; so also Italian. Wo could not wish for a nicor mothod of reducing the dolec far nienle to intelligent practice than by often repairing to this seat of the Muses and here commune with the poets, orators and sages of old. The library is open to all citizens from 10 A. M. to 2 P. M. every day, excepting Saturday and Tuesday. Whon tho remainder of the books shall oome down we design paying anothor visit, if not before. Judge EINO'S library is well selected, pointing to a fine presiding taste, a well cnltivated mind, a liboral hand, and all backed by a good balance at tho bankers. The connection of Judgo KING with the Charles ton Collego was long and intimate. He was tho oldest, staunchest, most constant friend the insti tution had in our city; and in bequeathing it his magnificent library he has erected for him self a monument perennius tere, and of precisely that character that ho would most appreciate. PROVOST COURT, May 29.-U. S. vs. Harvey Blake, colored.-MICHAEL DOWNING, Policeman, Bworn, statod about half-past 5 o'clock this morning, cornor of King and Tradd streets, saw defendant with a rifle, wrapped up in an India rubber cloth ; he said his father sent it to him from tho Hoad, but could givo no other account of it ; I arrested him, and took him and the rifle to the Guard House. The Court decreed that the rifle be bandod over to the Provost Marshal, and the prisoner discharged. U. S. vs. Peter Harris and Morris Edwards, both colorod.-J. Spoaring, sexton of Zion Church, sworn, stated thatlaefc evening about 10 o'clock, found defendants sleeping in the Churoh ; the Church has been robbed sevoral times ; they can easily open tho back windows, and must have got in thero ; thoro had boon service in the Church that evening ; cannot say thoso men robbed the Church ; had them arrestod, supposing they might givo some information as to who has robbed it. Sentence of tho Court : Morris Edwards to be imprisoned four days,- and Peter Harris fifteen days. U. 8. vs. Wm. Edwards, colored.-Fighting. HUMPHREY DUNOVAN, Policeman, sworn, statod at half-past 7 o'clock, on tho evening of the 29th, he saw dofondent fighting in Market-streot ; he is a low thieving rascal, always giving trouble ; a groat crowd gathored, and I arrestod bira and took him to tho Guard House. DARING ATTEMPT AT RODDERY.-Tho Columbia Pheonix, of yestorday, says : "On Monday last, while Mrs. KEYLOB-who Jives about two milos from tho city-was in her fiold at work, two frecd men entered her houso and etolo two trunks. Tho robbors, upon being seen and hailed by a Gorman in tbo omploy of Mrs. K., fired-two shots at their detectivo, but without offeot, tbon fled, loaving the trunks bahind. Information of tbo affair was given to Magistrato WALKER, who obtained a guard from tho military authorities, aud snecoodod in arresting the freedmon, who are now safely lodged in jail.
