Local News. WEDNESDAY, APRIL 5, 1399. We Must Manufacture 35,000 Bales of Cotton. Editors Intelligenter: Please allow me space in your paper for a few re marks. I am a citizen of Anderson, therefore interested in her welfare, as every good citizen should be. We have a good town, composed of good, substantial merchants, who buy the right goods at thc right price, thereby inducing trade to come here from Elbert and Hart Counties, Ga., from Ocouee, Pickcns, Greenville, Laurens and Abbeville Counties. These people are offered inducements by oui enterprising merchants to come here, and they come, not only for merchan dise. Our mule market is the best in the State, and hundreds of head of cat tle are sold and shipped from here each season. Our Lumber Mills are second to none. Our Oil Mills, our Foundry, our Ice Factory, all cover the above named territory, and dispense their goods at a lower price than can be duplicated elsewhere. Our four large Banks, with a capital and surplus of over oue-half million dollars, to say nothing of nearly as much more in de posits. This alone speaks louder for the prosperity of our people, both city and county, than any words weean add. We are surrounded by the best farm ing lands, and most prosperous farm ers to be found in the South. As evi dence of this fact, you may ride through the County 20 miles in any direction and you will see well terraced farms, good"dwellings, large barns, good ten ant houses and good public roads, that are worked by machines, and any strangers coming to our County from another say they can tell the County line by the superiority of our roads. Oui" wagon receipts of cotton for this year will reach 35,000 hales, which are the largest wagon receipts of any point in the State. If we will manufacture 35,000 bales cotton in our citv we will thereby increase our receipts" to 00.000 bales from railroad and wagon, and be er obied to pay more for the cotton, as our mills would save the freight bv ' buying from wagons. Our Bonded Warehouse, which is now ID operation, . will be of great assistance to this end. We will then hold the key to the cotton / market, and the small towns cannot pay what we can for cotton by the dif ference in freight. Our many manufacturing enterprises ?ire prospering, and all paying hand sohie dividends. The largest of these is che Anderson Cotton Mills, with u capital of over a half million dollars, and pitying a good semi-annual divi dend, its stock being sold above - .ar, and employing hundreds of hands, dis pensing good in every direction and helping largely, and, in fact, more than any other one agency, in the material .development of our city and County. We also have numerous other manu facturing interests, suchas the Roller Flour Mills, turning out as tine grade patent flour and the best quality of meal to be had anywhere. The Mat tress Factory, running a large force of hands, and chipping their products all over the South. The Soap Factory, the Tannery, the Broom Factory and various other enterprises that tend io build up a town in a solid way. Last but not least is the Water, Light &i Power Co, that is furnishing the power from their plant at Portman Shoals, 0 miles from the city, on Seneca River, to mn the Anderson Cotton Mills and other small manufacturing plants. They are now arranging to increase theil- power, so as to be ready to furnish the power for the other new enterprises as they are established. We are on the right line and must not slack up. We know of another large Cotton Mill of .*200,000 capital now on foot, and well underway, with some $50.000 already subscribed. Also a Yarn Mill is assured by another en terprising party and a Knitting Mill ol' $10,000 capital. All of these, wkh our prospects for the Black Diamond Rail road, which we are informed is now assured, what is there to hold us down. We must go to work as one man, and sec th we all put down all the money wc eau, much or little, and ia less than .one year the young enterprises set forth above will be realities. We should -encourage the monied men of our city, who show their faith in our future by making large subscriptions to these enterprises. The hard cash carries jnore force than anything else, and when they come down with that at $20,000 a clip we know they mean busi ness, and should have the encourage ment of every mau, woman and child of the County, for what benefits the .city benefits the country, giving a mar Jcet for their products by increasing the value of their farming lands and in .ereasiug their possibilities for happi ness in religion, education and civiliza tion. We are destined to become the most prosperous section of the South .and our city truly the electric, city of the Piedmont. Put in your mite and assist in pushing the good work along. We must manufacture 35,000 bales of cotton, and to double our receipts is then assured. CITIZEN. Asbnry Items. Probably the readers of this paper think wc are dead but such is not the case.
