Our report of Ute cyclone ol last week, though hurriedly gotten up, waa in the main correct. Mr. and Mrs. Osborne Wat kins, who wore reported missing, came up all right. A gentleman, who has been over portions of the track of the cyclone, says it is impossible to describe thc work of tho storm, or to estimate tho vast damage sus tained. Those who sutfered hy the ?torin have been generously assisted by their friends and neighbors in rebuilding their houses and in providing provisions and clothing. Mrs. Mary P. Maxwell, relict or the late Capt. Robert Maxwell, of this County, died tit her residence in Pendleton from typhoid fever nu Wednesday morning, 20th ult. Mrs. Maxwell was an accomplished and elegant lady, respected and esteemed by all who had the pleasure of her acquaintance. She was at the time of her death seventy nine years ol age, and hud been for many Sears a devoted member of the Pendleton aptist Church. Her remains were interred in the Baptist Church cemetery al Pendle ton on Thursday, after appropriate funeral services, conducted hy the pastor. Rev. C. P. Ervin. Last Saturday night, between ll and 12 o'clock, our citizens were aroused by the cry of lire. Mr. Harry McGrath, while riding past Messrs. Brow? Urns', store, which has a glass front, noticed a blaze in side, and at once gave the alarm, which was re sounded hy Mr. A. G. Means, who was crossing the simare at the time. Mr. Means ran to the scene, and, with the as sistance of Mr. McGrath, broke open the lo T. The smoke from the huming goods was very stilling, but these two gentlemen went >u and began to subdue the Hames. By t his lillie the alarm b;canic general, ami ;t large erowd soon gatnercd. The lire lind ?aught about the center of thc west side of the store, and wus rapidly consuming the gooda piled upon the shelves. Hy hard work tue shelves were soon emptied of their contents, and the hames extinguished. A Tew minutes later and Anderson would liave bad a disastrous conflagration. The lire is supposed to haye been caused by rats ind matches, as there were several gross of die latter piled upon the bottom shelf where the (ire was burning. The damage to Messrs. Brown Bros', stock is estimated it about $300, which is covered by insu rance. A Fire Department for Anderson. Dr. S. M. Orr. member of City Council, ind Dr. It. P. Di wer, expert machinist, who. as we stated last week, went to Charleston for the purpose of examining l?verai lire engines ottered for salo by the fire department of that city, returned last Saturday evening. On Monday morning i meeting of the City Council was held to liear a report from these gentlemen, and Dr. Divver submitted a written report, in which he stated that he had made a thor 3tigb test of the engines, and had selected the engine known v.- "Pioneer," as it was in good repair ano weil adapted to our want. Dr. Orr reported that ho had put ? .-based this engine, together with a nose reel and one hundred feet of hose, the con lideration being $i,200. The Council con firmed these reports, and appointed a coni nittee, consisting of Mayor Maxwell, Al lermen Orr, Stephens and Brown, to regu ate and perfect the fire department. This tommittce will correspond with other lepartments, and get all the information possible in regard to the best way of pro riding water. As soon aa this information s obtained, the Council Will immediately idopt the most practicable plan. The Charleston Newt and Courier bas this to say lbout thu engine purchased : "A committee representing the City Council of Anderson nave been in Charles ton for a week post looking at tba spare ?team fire engines which the department aere has (or sale. After a thorough exam ination the committee have purchased the iteamer formerly known as tho Pioneer, together with a hose carriage and .100 feet tif bose. Twelve hundred dollars is under itood to bo the price paid for the entire rat?t. The Pioneer is a third-clasa Clapp ?"iones engine, old patent, and ia almost is good as new, having been kept in good jrder during her long service in Charleston. The machine ia a light one, admirably idapted for usein a thriving and pushing rouug city like Anderson, and will doubt less dogood service provided the city fathers furnish tho necessary supply of water." The engine will bo shipped to Anderson in a few days. This action of the City Council meets with tho hearty approval of ill our citizens. Fire Department and Water Supply.
