LIQUOR DRIXKI5G, Thc Practical Value of Abstinence. Tlio distinction between temperance and total abstinence is no longer a prac Heal one. There was a time in this country in tho memory of men not yet old, when liquors were on every side board, and tho conscious scruples against day of moderate drinking is past. ?Soci ety is already divided into two great classes: teetotalers and drunkards. There is certainly a small class between thr?e two, but so small as to be practi cally out of consideration. And this small class is rapidly diminishing to zero. I am not now justifying this distinction. I only assert it as a fact discernible to any one who will look into the condition ol modem society. ( io through any com munity and you will discover that the men who use alcoholic liquors in any degree, beyond a strictly medicinal uso, are such as use them to excess. Con trariwise, those who abstain from their ino in any, degree abstain altogether. Doubtless there are a few communities in which this is not the case. Jhil they will invariably be found to be such com munities as a^e far behind the ago and do not in any considerable measure par take of the restless activity of our times. For such sluggish and phlegmatic people moderato drinking may still be safe. But this class do not represent tho pres ent generation. Tho average tuan ol to day is a busy man. Ho is driven from morning to night by eager demands ol his business, ile is under continual strain of intonso nervous excitement. Stimulants can only increase this and levy heavier tax on energies already over-taxed. The drinking habit can only result in a more rapid expenso of nerv ous force. That which was safo for tho easy going sluggard becomes perilous for tho mun who is dilligent in business. .Stimulants may serve to arouso a torpid nature, but they are aa oil poured on fire, to the intensely nervous and active mau. And such is thc man of this generation. Activity, not torpidity, rs tho characteris tic of our agc. lt is this intenso life of our modern times that ia making temper ance and total abstinence ono and the same thing. To tho activo man abstinence is of tho highest practical value, because it is the conservation of lila muscular and nervous strength. Thc power to do hard work is preserved by abstinence and lost by in dulgence. Success comes easier to thc teetotaler than to thc drinker. Take for oxamplo tho lowest order of success : that which depends on stout and sturdy muscle. The strongth which carries the hod or digs the ditch is mainly animal Strength. There is almost no demand hero either for nervous or mental energy. Now animal strength is never increased by tho use of alcohol. Tho man who has just Bwallowcd his drink feels himself stronger beyond doubt. Ho often fools himself richer also; but he isn't. His increase of wealth is a delusion. So is his increase of strength. Wo must grant that alcohol has tho charm of deluding men into believing themselves stronger by its use; but we must iusist that tho belief ia a delusion and a snare. For if there bo any power in alcohol to increase animal strength why don't you give it to animals? Why not mako tho horso swallow his portion of liquor when he is to draw an unusual load or bo driven an uuUBiial distance? We know this would bo nonscuso. But why more nonseuse to hope to add to tho strength of a horse's body by alcoholic stimulant, than to add to the strength of a man's ? Nor does alcohol add to ono's power of endurance. It easily renders ono uncon scious of the strain thal is tnado on his strength, becauso it stupefies thc brain where all Buch strain is felt and reported The brain ?B the guardian of our strength, because it notes any unfair demand made upon it and immediately warns against it. But if this guardian be ren dered so insensible thal it cannot noto as usual, tho injury inflicted on tho mus cles, tho draining of strength docs not c?ase beenup ou: obaervalion o? it ceases. Tho sottish soul may cry out between hiccoughs, "They have stricken mo and I was not sick," but be is sick nevertheless. Thc stroke has loft its injury though be is insensible to it. The draught made on tho physical energies is just as great and greater when one is so stupefied by stimulant ns to bo insensible and indifferent to it. What is true of muscular stroiigth is uono tho less (rue of nervousness and mental strongth. The use of stimulants docs not augment but rather decreases the chances of success in those linea of busiuess, which depend either an skill or intelligence. Absti nence ia not ouly safe but it is profitable. -Exchange. How They Catch Mackerel, The mackeral-catcber baa a somewhat peculiar experience. VCSBOIS of this ciaas arc of tho same rig, tonnage, and lading tho cod-fish, except in them the sein takes tho placo of the trawl. The scene of their operations is rather wider, too, as thoy meet the mackerel on their appearance in the spring ns far South as Virginia, and follow them to the shores of Greenland and Iceland. George's bank, in the open sen, about one hundred and fifty mileB off Cape Ann, and the Dominion watera are, however, the favor ite fishing-grounds. When ono of these vessels reaches the spot wbcro ber prey may be taken, a sharp watch is kent for tho Bchoola, which may bo seeu playing about on the aurfac? ; old ?alts aver that they can smell a school of mackerel aa well as menhaden. When ono is sighted, tho listless of tho crew gives away to animation. The pursoine, coiled on the after hatch, is^ hastily thrown into the seine-boat, which hes been towing astern since the vessel left port. Two dories are let down, aud, in company with ihe Heine-boat, row out toward the school. At tho proper time tho scine-bosB gives the word, the two dories take each end of the seine, some two hundred and fifty .'athoaiB in length, and in three-minutes en'.lose the school. Then tho seine is "passed," and the .schooner is signal led to come alongside. There arc five hun dred barrels of large, fat mackerel in the "purse." The method of transferring them to the vessel ?B much like that practiced by. the menhaden steamers. A large dip net, with long handle, work ed by tackling, ia let down into the struggling mass and throws them on the Vessers deck, by the half-barrel. Thia don?, the operation of "dressing down" begins by throwing the catch into a snuare trough ; twelve men of the crew of fourteen then attack them knives, dex terously open them by u slit down tho back, and clean them eta stroko ; they are then washed, assorted into various grades according to the size and fatness, and packed in barrels, one barrel of Liverpool salt being required for four barrels of fish. So rapidly do they work that forty-seven barrels have been clean ed and packed in two hours and a half. Mean time two men have been overhaul ing the seine, repairing it where a ahark or blue-fish has made a rent, and the men are ?eadv for Annthnr haul-i e rh ?no felt by few. Tho Un',-, tu Muk?' Sandy Lands Productive and Kcuitiiieruthc. The Texas Farmer grasp?, u groat truth and hulda it up clearly to view fur all readers when it urges ns it does in thc following article, improvement of coil: How to improve light sandy lauds and render them productive and remunera tive with the least expense and labor, and at thc stine time bring them into this condition as soon UH possible, hu long been a leading problem, loren 1er such soils highly fertile i- a work requir ing time and patience, but it is being done. Lands that were naturally exceed ingly barren and worthless in th? ir natural condition have, under intelligent abd judicious management, become rich and valuable. The amelioration of such soils, it hardly need be said, consists in supplying them with constituents mee-? sary to plan*, growth ?hieb they lack in greater or less degree, and in constantly improving them. To supply such con stituents in the form of manures of va rious kind- nt thc outset is impracticable in almost nov eave by reason ot' the ex ponte and labor required; but this course is not necessary. Nature is ever ready lo alford assistance and generously second man's efforts in this behalf, if be will adopt proper means lo reach the tlc sired end. She hits provided plants tlial are specially adapted to such -?oils. The clovers are muong such plants. The cow-pea is especially adapted t ? such -oils, and lhere are others we m ed rmi stop lo name, whi. li seize lipon the slight nourishment afforded ami hy their habits of growth shade the soil, extract valuable and necessary material for I'. ? . ir own subsistence both from thc mirth and the atmosphere, anti work nj vigorously as possible to recuperate the productive capacity of the soil in which they live. Such crops hi lime fill thc soil with a mass ol fibrous roots, cover the surface willi foliage, if tbert; is u possibility of doing so, thus shading thc ground and preventing the evaporation of such mois ture from tho earth, and extract valuable fertilizing matter from the atmosph?re which contributes largely to supply fer tility. The value ol' turning under such crops is well known and need not now be enlarged upon. These,, with tho use of such suitable manures and fertilizers as can be rc.dily supplied, supplemented witii u proper rotation of crops and t ii o keeping of live stock, will in time bring unproductive, light soils into a good de gree of fertility. -- Young Mr. Tremble, who is quite bright, wan at u party one night and he was quite well looked nt by thc girls before he was introduced. Alter the introduction he soon caught on, and was making himself very popular. "Oh, In, Mr. Tremble," laughed Miss Mollie nt one of his witty remarks, "you remind ino so much ol a friend of mine." "In deed, Miss," said Tremble, "ill what way?" "Uh, ho looked just like he baden't a bit of sense, but when one knew him, he was just too awfully cute for any use."
