"IN TELE MORNING." A TRUE INCIDENT OF THE WAH. "Do you pee that young lady in while talking" willi Clark ?" Tho speaker wa? a tail, distinguished looking man of ?J5 in ihe uniform of a cavalrv colonel in thc Confederate ser vice. ' The lime was a summer night in 180:} : the place, the hotel parlor in usinai! village ?n Middle Tennessee Thc i ccasil ll wan a "lion" give.: hi honor of the presence ol u detachment of "For re l'? Cavalry," the daring riders whose names ?rc household words in Southern homcH, from the mountains of Tennessee to the valleys of thc Mississippi. The young lady "referred to was a pretty, graceful gill with dark gray eyes, waving hair of reddish gold, and the exquisite complexion that accompanies it. "Who is she?" asked the Colonel's companion. "That is Picton'a sweetheart. Mi-s Garnett." "Not the same that saved his life alter Shiloh?" said Capt. Harelay. "The same,'' rejoined Col. Terry. "She is a little creature to ?lo such a thing, hut she did, You see she was in thc neighborhood at the time of the hat tie, and somebody told her that Picton was killed. She went over the field and found him. badly wounded through the lungs, but >till alive. She sent a boy that she had brought with her to hunt up a surgeon, and she stayed by Picton. The boy lound Dr. Cowan, and when tin y got back Miss Garnett hail raised Picton up, with his head on her breast, so that he could breathe more easily. Dr. Cowan examined the wound without moving him, and told her that, he was afraid it ' was hopeless, for the least motion, even laying him down airain, might produce a fain! hemorrhage, li he could he kept 1 perfectly quiet until morning and the bleeding checked during the night he ' might have 'a hare chance of pulling ! through.' 'Will,' -aid the bravo little ' woman, 'lie shall he kept quiet, for I will ' stay jud here und not let him move.' * Ami, hy George, she did; she never ' stirred all night, ?ind in tiie morning they cai ried him lethe nearest house, ' and she nursed him until he was out of danger." : "That's a sweetheart worth having," said Capt. Harelay, with a glance of ad miration at the subject of their conversa- ' lion. j Half an hour lalor, Gol. Terry was at ' Miss Garnett's side, receiving a warm greeting that told that thc two were fast { I'riends. ' "Tell me of all ruy (rieuds in ilie old bataillon," she said presently. J "How many?'' he asked qui/./.iiigly : "more than one?" I "1 mean what I say," she answered, ! with a merry laugh and a quick, bright 1 blush : "I have heard from 'one' of them ' very recently." "Does Charley know you are here'.'" 1 asked the Colonel. ! "No; it is not a week since 1 left ' Memphis. Will they join you here?" 1 "They ."' he replied inquiringly. "The rest of the command, I mean," ' sin; replied, blushing again. 1 "A portion id' it may, hut for that part you arc particularly interested in I can not say. You know they are with tho old Gcncial, and their movements can't he counted on with any great certainty." "They are the comets ol' the service," said Miss Garnett. Quito as erratic, at all events." "May I have llie pleasure of this dance .''' said the Colonel as the band struck up a quadrilled. "1 know it is useless to ask you fora waltz." The dance over, he lcd her to u chair, and, after a moment's guy badi migo, was ' about to resign his place in favor of tho ' other claimants for her smiles, when ho saw a sudden ghastly pallor overspread her features. "Miss Alice, you ure ill !" he exclaim ed anxiously. "Let mo get you somo water." It wnsjscarcely a monita' before his re turn, but even then ho wns shocked nt I her white, drawn face. "Call my sister !'' she said to another gentleman with her, while Col. Terry had ?;one for the water, and both had reached ' 1er at Hie same time. "Lucy take me home," she whispered, "I am dying." "Oh, no darling," said lier ; ?.der, tenderly, "you will he well in the morn- ? ing." ' As (mick us possible the carriage was 1 called and the sick girl placed in it. When they were just starting Col. Ter- 1 ry wished them good night, expressing 1 his hope that Mis-s Alice would have re covered by morning. She put out her hand, and exerting her .strength, said distinctly : "Yes, I ..hall be well in th" morning. Toll Charley-" her voice tailed, and, lifting her slim white hand, loosened thc Howers she were at lier brea-! and put t them into the Colonel's hands. "(Jive these to him-yes-in the morning." ? lier voice died away to a faint whisper, and her held fell on her sister's .shoulder. The lady who acted ns their chaperon | hastened to apply restoratives, mid the carriage rolled swiftly away. The next morning when Col. Terry called to inquire utter the invalid he lind no need to ask, for from the dot r .hero v floated tho mournful insignia ol death. Shocked beyond expression, that hardy soldier turned away, unable then to oven offer his services if they were needed. He went again after awhile and saw Mrs. Cameron, tho hostess of the sisters duriug I their visit. From ber ho learned tho brief details of Alice's death. lier at- , tack had been a sudden spasm of tho ; henri, and she had never rallied. She ' had not spoken but once, and they caught lier lover s name, und a repetition of the j words, "in the morning." "Poor Charley, who will tell him?" groaned tho Colonel, when tho lady's ( voice ceased. "You ure his best friend," she answer ed. "I think no one else could do it to gently." , "I can't," he replied, shaking his head, i "I would rather face a battery. Why, | you don't know, you can't think how his < very life seems bound up in her; and j now-" They buried her next morning ; six of Picton's friends carried his dead love to 1 her grave and then came sadly back, ? each questioning who would hear tho ' tidings to tho gallant aabreur for away 1 with the old brigade. ' ! That night the order came to join the ' main command, and by daylight the troops were mile* away. As they reached Hie vicinity of thu appointed renzdevous a desultory firing warned them of an ap- \ preaching conflict. Presently they form ed themselves in the midst of n portion 1 of the command, drawn up in a niece of ' woods overlooking a sloping field, which 1 on tho opposite eiue rose to a sharp em inence, on tho brow of which was posted a Federal battery. I Farther to tho right tho firing had bo- ? como sharper, and soon the rolf of mus- ; ketry swept all along tho line. "I say, Barclay," called Col. Terry, as t tho officer passed him, "have you soon - Picton yet?" Andas Barclay shook his head, added, "Tell the boys not to lot him know yet. Wait till thia is over." i "All right; I'll tell them," answered 1 Barclay, as he rode away. a "Tho old general will bo wanting that c battery the first thing they know," said 11 one o*. the mon, as a shell exploded over 1 their heads. "They had better keep it 1 quiet." c "Thar, what didi tell you?" he added, biting off a hugo piece of 'long green ;' \ "thar go thc Mississippi boys now." As ho spoke a tawny column moved < out of the woods and swept gallantly i across tho field. 13ut as they reached the 1 center a murderous round of grape and 1 canister tore through the ranks and tho 1 column broke in contusion. Three times c their leader rallied them to the charge, f and three times they were shattered hy the galling fire. "Tell you what, boys," called out the private who had before spoken. Thar's fun COIilin' now! Tliat't Gang's bugle. The 'old regiment' want some ol' ttic pie !" J Ie sloopi d and felt his saddle girth as he spoke, then straightened himself and wailed for the command, for he was "one of the boys.'' The m xl moment there was a ringing cheer fro?! ,'"> ra'tikH as Oe?. Forrest rode up. . Ilovs," ho exclaimed, pointing with his sword, "I want that battery captured. (Jue regiment has tried, and couldn't take it. Now I want you boys til do better than that. I am going to L ad you and I want you all lo follow me. Another cheer was the ano wer, as the men fell into ranks. "Charge !" and donn the slope rode tin-gallant "old regimen!," never (alter ing us the grap shot swept through ser ried ranks closing each gap aa it was made by the deadly lire; on, uti, follow ing the lead of the tall figure al the bead nf tho column, till they rode right over the deathdealiug guns, "sal/ring thc gunners there,"' and the woods gave back the ringing echoes >f the famous "rebel yell'' as the victory was won. Won ! Ves, but at a fearful cost. That fatal slope was drenched with the blood of the ?Southland's bravest sons. Alter the charge Col. Terry found him self face to lace with ('harley Picton. "My (?od, how can I tell him?" muttered thc colonel to himself as the gallant young fellow rode toward him, holding out his liam). "lt takes ti;<. When the .surgeon examined thc ?vo?ud he shook his head doubtfully. "I know a doctor worth twenty doc tors," whispered Picton willi a smile. ' Tiny, can't jon fetch ber to mc?" Through tho night the colonel stayed ?villi Ililli. < Ince be awaken and repeat d thu question be bad asked just before ?ic was shot. "I saw her, yes," the colonel answer .tl huskily. Terry took from hi* jrcast poekel the withered flowers, ti .pray ol' ivy and a half opened while rose and laid them in the outstretched land. The wounded mau slept. PiUl in u couple of hours he woke, much worse iud the surgeon in his rounds tedd tlx bronzed watcher that thc end was verj near. "Terry !" and the colonel bent iii: bead to catch thu faint accent. "I'n lying. I wouldn't mind-only-pool Alice! Tell her, gently please -sin loves mc, you know-andi, nh Terry it i-i bard lo leave her. My poor dar ing." For a moment thc colonel could not au swer. Then, choking back, a sob, li said, slowly and distinctly. "Charley, Alice is waiting for yoi You are not leaving her, hut are going t ber." A bewildered troubled look came int tho wistful blue eyes. "Don't you understand mc, Charley ?she is dead. We buried ber there i U-. I couldn't tell you before, ?lea boy. Then he slept again and thc hom passed on until the eastern sky bright et i-dlwith solemndawn light "Terry !" The word was but the fail test whisper, but the watcher instant! bent bead to listen.
