A conceit, under the management, of Mrs. Pin kind, had been arranged to come off at Pendleton last evening, in which Dr. A. P. Johnstone and Mr. J. Willie and Mike, tho large black horses driven to Mr. Murphy's dray, are aged rc rcspoctively 19 and 18 years, and have prob ably dono more hard work during thc 13 years they have been in his service than any two horses in the State. C.," a correspondent of the Green ville Daily Newt, writing from Williamston, S. C., says : "Our citizens arc delighted to learn that the gentlemen who purchased the Wilson Mill .Shoals from Major G. W. Anderson las?, spring will take possession thc first of December, and commence the erection of two hundred tenement houses. That looks like business. It is well known, of course, that thc company bought tho shoals (br the purpose of erecting a taetory, such a one as is ot Piedmont. "Williuiustou expects to ba much im proved when this much tdked of factory is completed. It is said that the company will run a railroad' from thc factory to I Prince's crossing, and e-tabllsh a depot ? there. Of collrae, the citizens of William ston prefertlic depot to be here, and thc road to run from this place, a distance of per haps three-quarters of a mile further than from the factory to Princes'. We have yet to learn how that will be, anil what will be the effect on business herc in cither event. '"Ibis section of Anderson County is inn better condition financially than it has been for ninny year?. Many of our good, honest farmers who have owed money for years are puyiug their d?lits and getting "even wit li the world.' " A War Incident. EDITOR INTELLIOKNCER: Recently I wrote to the postmaster ut Sparta, Illinois, inquir ing for a gentleman of that city whom 1 met there in 1874. Thc postmaster, whose name is Andrew Wilson, gave Hie desired information, and added : "Now it ia my time to make an in quiry. If you know one John R. Cochran, of Anderson C. H., please let mc know. I waa there in 1861." In my reply 1 asked him to state the cir cumstances ofilia being at Anderson at a time when tho war was in progress; and he responded as follows: 'In may, 1S73, I was captured by the Confederate troops near Rome, Oeofgia, and remained a prisoner of war until the 1st day ol March, IUDS. I was held at different points in thc South, and while confined at Columbia, 8. C., I escaped and traveled a northwesterly direction, but was finally recaptured at a farm house about 17 miles north of Anderson C. H. by the man who lived there-Maj. McCann.'they culled him-and a number of boys and old men. There were six of us together, and we were taken back to Anderson and im prisoned in the county jail two days ond nights'. While we were confined there John R. Cochran called cn ?" and manifested such kindness to myself and others thatl wanted to hcur whether he wa3 still living." I am sure the persons alluded to, as well os others, will recall the incident, and will no doubt read this rehearsal of it with some interest; hence I ask you to publish it. W. A. DICKSON.
