Judge Mackey adjourned Court at noon Tuesday and went over to Greenville In tho afternoon to make a political speech that night. He returned on the 11.35 train on "Wednesday morning. Col. Jumes L. Orr has sold his placo in town to Mr. M. Kennedy, of Charleston, who will remove to this place at un early day for permanent locution. Mr. Kennedy is a contractor and builder. A number of gen tlemen have been practicing with thc view of entering tho contest. Waddy E. Jones, a seven-year-old son of Mr. W. J. Jones, picked HG pounds of cot ton on Wednesday last. On the came day Effie Freeman, a seven-year-old daughter of Elizabeth Freeman, picked 113 pounds. That was good work for tho children. The Ladies' Store is sustaining its excel lent, und well-earned reputation this season. Miss Lizzie Williams is one of the host bus iness ladies in the Stute, and knows just how to please everybody that can bc pleased. An average production is rated ot 100. The returns from the Middle and Southern counties give a higher estimate than those from the Northern counties. Gufiin in Abbeville week before last, the former os principal and the latter as accessory, were brought before Judge McGowan, at Abbeville, on Monday of last week upon a writ of habeas corpus, and, after examination, admitted to boil in the sum of $3,000 each. Bird's Crossing, a station on the Blue Ridge Railroad about ono mile above Six ond-Twenty trestle, has Lean made a dag Ltatlon, which will bo a very great advan tage to citizens living in that vicinity. The faro from that place to Anderson is 35 cents, or 45 cents for return ticket. Tho fare to Pendleton is 30 cents, or 40 ccu ta fora return ricket. Return tickets aro good for thrco days. Sovoral parties have been brought before the Town Council during the past week for violating the provisions of tue Ordinance published lost week against carrying con cealed weapons and hitching horses to shade trees, but as it was not generally known that such an Ordinance had been passed, the offenders were all forgiven. We ate authorized to ctate, however, that after ?his date these provisions of tho Ordinance will be rigidly enforced, a.. it should be. On lost Sunday morning a bale ef cotton that had been left in tho press of Mr. John E. Peoples, situated on the lot In the rear of his store on Brick Range, was discovered to be on fire, but owing *o its being confined the fire had made but .ittle headway. Mr. Peoples thinks tho cotton was set on fire by some evil disposed person during the night, os a burnt match was found lying by the preT. ?e.d besides it was hardly possible that tho cotton could have been ignited by other means. Tho merchants and business men of Co lumbia have published a "commercial, manufacturing and mechanical gazette and planters' and farmers' guide" of 82 pages. It ls simply an advertising pamphlet that will not pay them for tho paper it is printed on. The same amount of money judicious ly extended in nc .vjpapcr advertising would bave paid them five times os well os their "gazette," and a?, thc same time been much better for the printers of their city. News papers aro the best advertising mediums in tho world, and wo are surprised that tho business men of Columola have not long s'noo found that out. Mr. Bonj. C. Crawford's residence on tho "Keowce l'laco," near the Air Lino Rail road, in Plckens County, was burned on Sunday afternoon lust. Mr. Crawford had gono with bis family to spend tho afternoon with bis father, Mr. J. V/. Crawford, a mlle and a half away, and while lhere discovered his house on tiro, which is in plain view j from that place. Ho hastened nome, and reached there in time to save some bedding, a sewing machine, and nearly all of tho wearing apparel of the family, everything else being consumed with the building. The fire is supposed to have originated from a box of ashes, which were taken up and placed :n or 8 room of tho house that had foimcrly been ured as a kitchen. As the room had a stone door, no danger was ap prehended from thc box of ashes. Tho noose was tho former r?sidence of John" E. Calhoun. A colored man by the namo of George Norris, who lives in the Corner, wo believe, was arrested In town on last Friday after noon Jost as he was preparing to leave for home for stealing. He bad o Dag, in which was found the following articles : two um brellas, two pieces of bacon, eight pairs of shoes, ono bolt of Jeans, seven pounds of cheese, two bats, ono vest, one ball of twine, one box of matches and five or six sample, lots of coffee, tho whole amount worth $35, and taken from the stores of Messrs. Arn stein A Rose. Reed, Moorhead A Co., A. Lesser, Bleekley, Brown A Co. and J. lt. Font A Co. Ile was taken before Trial Justice Whitefield on three separate indict ments and committed to jail for 30 days on each of the indictments. The bot supper given by Ibo colored Baptists in Masciio Hall on Friday night last ended iu a most disgraceful row Two colored men, both of whom were drinking, got into a ditriculty and beanie so boister ous that il wat found necessary to call in the police, whuoe authority was most d?li ant ly opposed, not only by the principals of the difficulty, but also by several of their friends, atuoug whom were two or three women. As Boon as Mr. Fant. Chief of Police, entered the ball a crowd of mad dened and infuriated negroes surrounded him and in a few seconds had him on the floor, and Sloan Williams, who seemed to be the leader of thu gang, did Ids beut to take bis life wi.li a knife, but whose blows were successfully wurded olf, Mr. Fant re ceiving only a slight cut on the left oyo brow. Whllo Mr. Kant was being abused, the crowd did all in their power to keep the other policemen from interfering, which indicates strongly (bat the whole artair was a preconcerted plan lo entrap the police of the town and wreak vengeance upon them for some imaginary wrong, lt took several minutes' hard work to quell the disturbance and restore things toorde?. In thc fracas Williams received a severe blow on the head, and was carried to thc eallaboosc, but was afterwards released on bond to appear for trial. Tilda White, a sister of Wil liams', also received II severe blow for inter fering with thc police and attempting to prevent the latter's arrest, from the eireet of which we understand hbo has since suffered considerably. Friday, Circa? Day. It is pretty generally conceded that thc crowd in town on lust Friday was about the largest ever congregated at this pince on any occasion. It was variously estimated at from eight to ten thousand person*, nt least two-thirds of whom were colored. They came from every section of the County, and by t? o'clock tho sonore tod streets ot the town were crowded with people and vehi cles to such an extent that it was with dilti culty that a person could get from one uart of the main portion ol' town to thc oilier, except on foot. It was evident earlv in the morning that tho day would bean extreme ly boisterous one, as ardent spirits were be ing freelv imbibed by old and young, big and little, which seemed to develop the fighting qualities to a remarkable degree in even those who ordinarily ore quiet and inoffensive while under the influence of strong drink. We do not think there ever was as much drunkenness and disorderly conduct in our town in one day before, end although there was a police force of eighteen or twenty on duty, it was simply i?iru>?.'!ile to preserve order. A large num ber of u:rcst3 of both white und colored perseus were made, who were committed to the callaboose, and who have since been dealt with by the Town Council for their several ofTences. The circus arrived at this place ot about 3 a. m., and the scene ot thc Hine Ridge yard, where the exhibition was given, from that time until about 7 p.m., when they left, was indeed a lively one. By 10 o'clock everything was in readiness for the exhibi tions of thc day, which opened with a street parade, and about thc poorest wo over saw. The side show, which are usually first-class frauds, was very good-better than usual the most attractive features of which were educated animals and un illusionist. The menagcry was about as attractive as menag eries generally arc, but lind no animals not usually found in BUCII exhibitions. In the circus proper, there was some good acting, good riding, a tolerably good clown and some splendidly educated dogs, the feats and pranks of which afforded the audience more pleasure than any other one feature " thij exhibition. There were about four or five thousand persons under the canvas, about equally divided between the races. Taken all together, thc entire performan ces and exhibitions of the day would com pare favorably with those of other circuses that have visited our community. One es pecially commendable feature of Robinson's Circus is the fact that it is not accompanied by thc horde of thieves and gamblers that usually follow circuses for Hie purpose of robbing and cheating tho ignorant out of their hard-earned means. Opening Up the Savnnnan River. Hon. Alexander H. Stephens, of Georgia, has written a letter to gentlemen on the subject ol'opening Up the Havannah River to navigation, in which he says that the late Congress appropriated tho sum of $20, 000 for that purpose, which is to he expo Hi ed between July 1,1880 and July 1, 1831. Mr. Stephens says: Like all other appropriations in thc same bill, which aggregate to between eight and ten millions dollars, thc money is to be un der the direction of the Chiel Engineer of the United States. He in this, as in all other cases, will appoint some subordinate officer to supervise the wo.-k. Federal appropriations for improvements in rivers and harbors are always expended under the direction and control of Federal officers, and in accordance with previous surveys made by Federal officers. In this case I had an act passed ordering a survey to be made, with estimates for improving the Savannah River above Augusta up to the mouth of Tugaloo River. Tho survey was made by Lieut. Carson, I think his name is, two years ago. He made a favora ble report. The aggregate, I now think, s about $250,000 to complete the work os nc thought the public interest requires. Forty or fifty thousand he recommended (1 think this was the sum) to be used annually. I rundejevery exertion in my power to have his recommendation, whatever it was, carried out, but could not get the appropriation the first year for a larger sum than $20,000. This was about tho some ratio granted to esti mates made by engineers on other rivers. I suppose an officer will be detailed to take charge of this work within o month at least. I have not as yet heard from the En gineer in Chief. There are so many works of this sort provided for in the bill it will require somo timo for him to organizo his numerous corps. I suppose also the work will begin at Au gusta and proceed upwards. I am not cer tain of this, however. The Engineer may upon arrival and examining the report of Lieut. Carson como to the conclusion that $20,000 maj' bo moro.usefully expended up on some points or shoals above Augusta. As soon as I know who tho officer isl will give him a letter to you and other well in formed, practical men along the line who can let him know where the chief difficul ties and obstructions lie, and to consult with him as lo how the money can bo most use fully expended according to thc purpose of Congress. An Appeal to the Tempor?neo People of Anderson County. Tempor?neo people, why should we talk longer? Is it not in order to ask, Shall we begin work? Or has tho temperance talk of .the past year done so much fur thc cause that no further effort is needed ? So much indeed was gained in the temperance inter est that more Ibmo? waa anhl la.it vpjir tbnn coring the year before. Could it he unwise for temperance people to do a judicious amount of work now? Without standing upon ceremony, and waiting for someono else-in end amounting to nobody-to take or to make action, let some one in each neighborhood join with villtag heart in the work.
