Andrew Leo came home at evening from thc shop where he had worked all day, tired, and out of spirits-carno homo to his wife, who was also tired and out of spirits. "A smiling wife and a cheerful home what a paradise it would bc!" said An drew, to himself, as he turned his eyes from tho clouded fuco of .Mrs. Lee and sat down, with knitted brows and moody aspect. Not a word was spoken by either. Mrs. Lee was getting supper, and she moved about with a weary stop. "Como," she said nt last, with a side glance nt her husband. There was invitation in the word only, none in the voice of Mrs. Lee. Andrew arose ami went to tilt table. lie was tempted to speak an angry word, but controlled himself, and kept silence. He could (iud no fault with thc chop, or sweet home-made bread, nor thc fra grant tea. They would have cheered thc inward man, if there had only been agleam of sunshine on thc face of his wife. Ile noticed that she did not eat. "Aro you not weil, Mary?" Tho words were on his lips, but he did not utter them, for tho face of his wife looked BO repcllant that he feared an irritating reply. And so, in moody silence, thu twain sat together until Andrew had fin ished his supper. As he pushed his chair back, his wifo aroso, and commenc ed clearing tho table "This is unbearable 1" said Leo to himself, as ho commenced walking thc floor of their ?ttlo breakfast-room with his hands thrust desperately away down into his trouser pockets, and his chin almost touching his breast. After removing all tho dishes and takincr thom into the kitchen, Mrs, Lc-e sprca3 a green covor on tho table, and placing a fresh trimmed lamp thereon, went out nud shut tho door after her, leaving her hilsban? alono with his un tilcasant feelings, ile took a long, deep neath ns ho did so, paused in his walk, Btood still for sonic moments, and draw ing a paper from Iiis pocket, sat down by thc table, opened tho sheet, and com menced reading. Singularly enough tho words upon which his eves rested were "Praise your wife." Tiioy rather ten ded to increase thc disturbanco of mind from which ho was suffering. "I Bhould liko to find ?omo occasion for praising mino." Ho- quickly his thoughts expressed that ill-nnturcd senti ment. Hut his eyes were on tho pago before bim, and bo read on "Pralso your wife, man ; for pity's sake givo her a little encouragement; it won't hurt her." Andrew Leo raised his eyes from the paper, and muttered, "Oh yes, that's all very well. Praise is cheap enough. But praiso her for what? For being sullen, and making your homo tho most disagreeable place in tho world ?" His eyes fell again on tho paper. "Sho made your homo comfortable, your hearth bright and "bining, your food agreeable, for pity's sake, tell her you thank her, if nothing more. Sho don't expect it ; it will make her eyes open wider than they havo for ten years but it will do her goodj for all that, and you too." It seemed to Andrew as if this sentence was written just for him, and just fur the occasion. It was tho complete an Bwcr to his question. "Praiso her for what?" and ho fuit it almost as a re buke. Ho read no further, for thought eamo too busy, and in a new direction. Memory was convincing- him of injustice towards his wife. Sho liad always' made his homo as comfortable for him a* hands could mako, and had ho offered tho light return of praiso or commenda tion ? Had he ever told hor tho satisfac tion ho had known or tho comfort expe rienced? Ho was not able to recall tho time or occasion. As ho thought thus Mrs. Leo carno in from tho kitchen, and taking her work basket fruin a closet, placed it on a table, sat down without speaking, began to sew. Mr. Leo glanced almost stealthily at tho work on her hand-*, and saw that it wa* the bosom of a shirt, which sho was stitching ueatly. Ho knew that it was for him that abo was at work. "Praiso your wife." Tho words were beforo the eyes of his mind, and ho could not look away from them. Hut ho was not ready for this yet. Ho still felt moo dy and unforgiving. Tho expression of his wifn'tj faco ho interpreted to bo ill nature, and with ill-nature ho had no pa tience. His eyes fell upon tho newspa Eer that lay spread out Dcforc him, aud e read tho sentence : "A kind, cheerful word spoken in a gloomy home, is like the rift in a cloud that leta thesunshino through." Lee struggled with himself a whilo longer. Hi? own Ul-Iintlirn lind tn ha conquered first ; his moody accusing spirit had to bo subdued. Hut he was coming right, and at last got right, as to will. Next carno the question as to how he should begin. Ho thought of many things to say, yet feared to say them, lest his wife should moot his advances with a cold rebuff. At last, leaning to wards her, and taking hold of tho linen bosom upon which she was at work, ho said, in a voice carefully modulated with kindness: "You aro dome: this work very beauti ful, Mary." Mrs. Lee made no reply. Hut her husband did not fail to observo that BOO lost almost instantly, that rigid crectucss with which she had oeen sitting, so that the motion of her needle hand ceased. "My shirts are better made and whiter than those of any man in our shop," said Lee, encouraged to go ou. "Are they?" Mre. Lee s volco was low, and had in it a slight huskiness. She did not turn ber face, but her huubanr saw that she leaned a littlo towards him. He had broken through the ice of reserve, and all was easy now. His hand was among the clouds, and feeble rays wero already struggling through tho rift it hr.cl made. "Yes, Mary," ho answered, softly; "and I've heatd it said more than once what a good wife Androw Leo must have." r Mrs. Leo turned her face terraris her husband. There was light in it, and light in her eyes. But tuero wo? some* thing in the expression of the counts nance that a little puzzled him. No wonder that her face was clouded, nor that what h<- considered moodiness and ill-nnturc took possession of her spirits. "You are good and true, Mary my own dear wife. Sonic distance from the big tree is a giant brother, which, towering broad and high above its neighbors, ami concealed ut a dis tance by foliage, impresses yu un ?ls ap pearance as being the monarch himself, but when you reach the little knoll, with its open .space, on which Munds the com pact mass of hark and timber, and gaze aloft on the huge limbs, themselves larger than surrounding trees, you stand before the largest representativo of tin.' vegetable kingdom in the Southern States. The ' big tree," which is on the grounds ol' Mr. Adam Alexander, a prominent citizen and devoted elder of thc Presbyterian ('burch, is a Tulip bearing Poplar [ Liriodendron Tnlijdfcra] with a height of l?? feel, a diameter of ?I feet, a circumference of about 128 tuet, and its lowest branches are .ri.r> feet from tho ground. Mr. Alexander told mo that ono day, while riding, he and Maj. Anthony Porter drew up their horses sidewise on thu opposite sides of tho tree and couid not, around it, seo even thc tips of each other's horse's heads or tails. This grove was Clod's first Presbyte rian temple in Georgia, for about the year 1700 the South Carolina Presbytery sent delegates, who held a meeting and ordained ll ?. William Springer, the first Presbyterian pastor in tleorgia, un der tho branches of this tree. Among thu officiating members of this open air Presbytery was Kev. John Brown, I), p., tho first President of Franklin College, now the University of t?corgia. Dr. Brown and his friend, Dr. Lorenzo Taylor, ol'tho Baptist Church, were both eminent for their piety; both were full of animal sp. ts, and both were great musicians.
