He is one of th#ablest prcachetB in the up-country, and is a favorite with ibo people of Anderson. . A grccnshantc, a species of snipe, but which is a much larger bird, was killed by Muster J. A. M. Carlisle last Saturday on Cox's cree'-:. It is the first bini of its kind ever seen in this region. It measured 3G inches from the end of its beak to thc point of its toe, and 40 inches ocrosa its wings. Wc hear frequent complaints of fence rails being stolen. Some people seem to think now that the fence law is in opera tion, that rails are public property. This is all wrong, and those caught in the act should bo prosecuted omi punished. At the meeting of the State Medical Asso ciation in Charleston last week, Dr. A. P. W?hlte, of Anderson, wnscleeted first Vieo Fresldcnt and a delegate to the American Medical Associution, which meets in At lunta, Ga., on the otb of May. He was also placed on thc State Board of Health. Dr. W. H. Nardin was elected a delegate to the Alabama Stato Medical Association. The first number of the State lh?teti?, a new paper, published in Chester L'y Messrs. T. W. Claw-son A Co., has been received. It ls a seven column paper, and presents quito a handsome appearance. It is well printed, and its editorial and beal depart ments promises to be well conducted, wbilo the selections oro very good. Messrs. B. Molairo and T. W. dawson, jr., are its editors, for whom wo wish a prosperous nm' successful future. Wo are pained to record tho death of Dr. W. T. Holland, which occurred at his resi lience in the Fork township on last Mon day morning. Dr. Holland was stricken with paralysis nearly threo years ago, and had sines been confined to his h.?l, and often Butlered very grout pain. Ho was a gentleman of many noble qualities or bead and heart, and had many friends In Ibis and adjoining counties. As a physician he enjoyed a lucrativo practice. He was a consistent and zealous member of thc Methodist Church from early life, ami in his death thc Church ha, lost a valued member. His bereaved family have (he sympathy of many friends throughout the County. The County Treasurer announces in an other column that bis otlice will be opeo for the collection of the first installment of the taxes for the current year on t!\o 1st day of May, and will remain open until the 1st day of June. The whole amount of the tux for this County this year is "J nulls, one half of which is due this month, the re mainder in September and October. All persons who fail to pay the tint installment will be charged five percent, hilcreston the amount due. Our tax last year was ll mills. Tho third annual session of thc Orand Lodge, Knights of Honor, of South Caro lina, was held in Newberry Ia*t week, em bracing Tuesday and Wednesday, The meering was oneol unusual interest, and will re.suit in much permanent good to the Order in tint State. The simple announcement that there is a Sullivan in the firm is suffi cient guarantee that things will be carried on in the proper manner. Mr. J. P. Sulli van is too well known to the trading public of this and surrounding counties to need any words of commendation from us, while Messrs. Jones and Vundiver, we are satis fied, need only to be tried to prove their worthiness of such good Company. The Abbeville Medium of last week pays this distinguished minister thc following deserved compliment: Rev. J. H. Adger, D. D., of Pendleton, preached in thc Presbyterian church a this {?lace last Sunday morning ajid evening, to large und intelligent congregations. In the morning bis discourse was based on the Church of Christ and the duties of tho elder ship. The sermon was one of the learned Doctor's best efforts and deeply impressed all who beard it. After the sermon, L. W. Perrin, Esq, son of the late Hon. Thomas C. Perrin, was ordained to the eldership. In the evening Dr. Adger preached again to a crowded congregation from Revelation xix:!)-"lilessed aro tli03r which ure called unto the marriage supper of thc Luinb." It is a real pleasure to sit under the preach ing of such a man-not one of your boast ing, swaggering sort with neither brains in his head nor grace in Ids heart, but a Chris tian gentleman and scholar.
