A local paper gives an Interesting account of the manufacture of parch ment In the old-fashioned town of Steynlng, In Sussex. Lying under tho shelter of the South Downs, and not far from where the River Adur cuts through this range, the staple industry of Steyning is the conversion of the skin of the sheep into parchment. It Is said that the larger part of the parchment used by the govermjFent is made here. Only a few of the skins brought to the factory are finally se lected as good enough for parchment, the'rest, it is said, being made.into “chamois leather.” The skin is split into two layers; the outer one is made into leather and the inner into parch ment. Should one He down after meals and, if so, should one sleep? Dr. Shule, an assistant of Baumer at Frei berg, has analyzed the contents of the stomachs of two normal subjects re moved several hours after an identical test meal of bread and distilled water, followed in one instance by sleep, in the other by simple rest in a hori zontal position. Schule shows that sleep during digestion always results in weakening the motility of the stom ach and increasing the acidity of the gastric Juice, a fact attributed by him to the irritation caused by the chyme’s remaining abnormally long in the stomach. He has also remarked that simple repose in a horizontal position, not accompanied by sleep, stimulates the gastric function without Increas 1 Ing the acidity.. . . ^ - - - , Where Parchment is Made. It Is to be hoped that sometime women will be sufficiently civilized so that they can have the same rights at the ballot box that lindians, negroes and illiterate whites now have. But the chief reason why women don’t have the ballot, as we have often arg- ed, is that they don’t want it, though a fe*w women mightily want'the ballot The ballot belongs to all but the il literate, the criminal and those de servedly pauperized in mind as well as in pocket. A learned man bribing voters with grog, with money or with promised office is the most illiterate of the whole lot, since illiterate heart turns knowledge into a conspiracy.— Lewiston Journal. FOOLED THE PREACHER. A. Doctor’s Brother Thought Postuni Was Coffee. £■ A wise doctor found out coffee was hurting him so he quit drinking it. He was so busy with his practice, however, that his wife had to write how he fooled his brother, a clergy man, one day at dinner. She says: “Doctor found coffee was Injuring him and decided to give Postum a trial, and we have used It now for four years with continued benefit. In fact, he is now free* from the long train of Ills that follow coffee drink ing. “To show how successful we are in making Postum properly, I will relate an incident. At a dinner we gave, doctor suggested that we serve Pos tum instead of ordinary coffee. “Doctor’s brother, a clergyman, supposed it was old fashioned coffee and remarked, as he called for his second cup, ‘If you do preach against coffee I see you haven’t forgotten how to make it.’ ” This goes to show that well-made —fully boiled—Postum has much the flavor and richness of good coffee al though it has an individuality all its own. A ten days* trial will prove that it has none of tha poisonous effect of ordinary coffee but will correct the troubles caused t>y coffee. “There’s^ a reason.” Name furnished by Pos- tum Co.» Battle Cr—kj Mich. The General Condemnation of So-Called Patent or Secret Medicines of an injurious character, which indulge in extravagant and unfounded pretensions f* to cure all manner of ills, and the National Legislation Enacted to Restrict Their Sale have established more clearly than could have been accomplished in any other way The Value and Importance of Ethical Remedies. Remedies which physicians sanction for family use, as they act most beneficially and I v are gentle yet prompt in effect, and called ethical, because they are of Known Excellence and Quality and of Known Component Parts. To gain the full confidence of the Well-Informed of the world and the approval of the most eminent physicians, it is essential that the component parts be known to and approved by them, and, therefore, the California Fig Syrup Company has published for many years past in its advertisements and upon every package a full statement thereof. The per fect purity and uniformity of product which they demand in a laxative remedy of an ethical character are assured by the California Fig Syrup Company’s original method of manufacture, known to the Company only. There are other ethical remedies approved by physicians, but the product of the California Fig Syrup Company possesses the advantage over all other family laxatives that it cleanses, sweetens and relieves the internal organs on which it acts, without disturbing the natural functions or any debilitating after effects and without having to increase the quantity from time to time. This valuable remedy has been long and favorably know*n under the name of Syrup of Figs, and has attained to world-wide acceptance as the most excellent of family laxatives, and as its pure laxative principles, obtained from Senna, are well known to physicians and the Well-Informed of the world to be the best of natural laxatives, we have adopted the more elaborate name of Syrup of Figs and Elixir of Senna, as more fully descriptive of the remedy, but doubtlessly it will always be called for by the shorter name of Syrup of Figs; and to get its beneficial effects, always note, when purchasing, the full name of the Company—rCalifornia Fig Syrup Co.— plainly printed on the front of every package, whether you simply call for Syrup of Figs, or by the full name, Syrup of Figs and Elixir of Senna, as Syrup of Figs and Elixir of Senna is the one laxative remedy manufactured by the California Fig Syrup Company, and the same heretofore known by the name, Syrup of Figs, which has given satisfaction to millions. The genuine is for sale by all leading druggists throughout the United States in original packages of one size only, the regular price of which is fifty cents per bottle. Every bottle is sold under the general guarantee of the Company, filed with the Secretary of Agriculture, at Washington, D. C., the remedy is not adulterated or mis branded within the meaning of the Food and Drugs Act, June 30th, 1906. CALIFORNIA FIG SYRUP CO.
