C ion, if acc^pteli would have jfound Up the old dispensary in i week, and would have saved upwards of $60,000 to the state. The expenses oi the commission amount to about $10,000 a month; and it will probably be the last of this year before the work is done. But Attorney General Lyon ruled that such a sale could not be made under the law. So much for legal technicalities against business common sense. But this question has been closed by the opinion of the At torney General. The question before the commission now is whether they will accept the $100,000 worth of cheap whiskey shipped by Clark Bros. The ma jority of the commission is in fa vor of accepting this $1.50 whis key and mixing it with a quan tity of $2.50 and $3.00 per gallon whiskey, now on hand and un saleable, and thus reducing the j price so that county dispensa- I ries may handle it advanta- i geously. On Tuesday morning at about C:30 o'clock the Augusta Chroni cle building, printing office and job department, and the Western Union Telegrajih office and equip ments were destroyed by fire. The fire began in the job depart ment, in the rear of the compos ing rooms, and its origin is un known. There was insurance amounting to $82,500 on the build ing, printing plant and job de partment. Our contemporary has our sympathy in their misfortune, and we are glad to know that ar rangements were at once made for a new plant, and that through the courtesy of the Herald not an issue will be missed. It would seem as if common business sense had been left con siderably in the back ground in the drawing of the Carey-Coth- ran liquor law. There ha* been so much talk, and actual belief in the dishonesty of much of the management of the old dispensa ry, that the dra^^fien of the law calities that the main object the law seems to have been de feated, which is to wind up the old dispensary as quickly as pos sible. A glaring instance of this was shown last week. Clark Bros. & Co. of Peoria, 111 , made a flat of fer to buy the eptire stock of liquors, jbpw on hand in Colum bia, valued at about $700,000, at its cost to the state, and pay cash for it, on condition that they be allowed to rent the dispensary building for .the rest of this year, to bottle the liquor there, and sell it to the county dispensaries, his very business like proposi- TYNER’b DYSPEPSIA REM CDY , A Guaranteed Cure.
