and it ia one which if not s. .. bear hardly upon the people. Coming Together. We sincerely trust that the meeting in Aiken on next Thursday will be of such proportions as will give the movement for harmony and good government, an impetus that will iasure victory. This movement represents the con servatism of the State, and is one that will necessarily grow by accre tions from both the extremes of the party, and we are glad to know that the so-called straightouts now see that they can act with us without sacrifice of pride, as we believe that there are enough white voters in South Carolina opposed to Governor Tillman and bis followers to defeat their re-election if their whole strength can be thrown against them. And it looks now like all these are coming together to make a united ef fort to rescue the State from the pres ent incompetent office holders, and to restore harmony within the Dem ocratic party. A,u to County Commissioners. At the late meeting of the State Democratic Executive Committee the question of the status of the County Commissioners came up and the com mittee decided to refer the matter to the Governor and ask him to get the opinion of the Attorney General on the subject. In accordance w r ith this request the Governor obtained the written opin ion of Attorney General McLauriu, in which the latter holds that the terms of the present commissioners will end upon the election and quali fication of their successeors, who must be elected next fall as usual. In other words, the scheme of county government in this State will remain as it now is until the Legislature sees fit to alter it. Consumption ol Fertilizers. As we published in our last issue the paragraph from the News and Courier showing an increase in the consumption of'fertilizers, and also one from the Columbia Register tending to confirm the statement of thi Charleston paper, we now pub lish the contradiction in the Augus ta Chronicle by Mr. J. Rice Smith. After quoting the article from the News and Courier, Mr. Smith says: “This article having wide-spread circulation, has led many to believe that a larger crop of cotton than ever before will be planted this season. Such statements so recklessly made can only prove injurious to the in terests of the planter, now prostrated by present low prices of -cotton. A promiuerr^official of the South Carolina Railway stated to a gentle man in Augusta that it was a mistake, and the facts since ascertained are that Charleston is fully 3000 car-loads behind last season^ The fertilizer trade will be at leastAL per cent, less than last season, a^^pay reach 40 per cent.” Again Mr. second t^^pfle in this country, and which shoulcl always re main independent of poluical dissen- tion, has been assailed and condemned in an official message, and in the press, by the present administration. For these reasons, and for the good of the State; for the purpose of securing therefor a safe, efficient and conserva tive government; in behalf of unity and harmony in the Democratic party; for the prosperity and freedom of all our fellow citizens, and with a view to es tablishing confidence in our government at home and abroad, a number of our- citizens have called a convention to meet in Columbia on the 24*h of March to name a State ticket to present to the Democratic nominating convention to be held in September and therein pledge themselves to be bound by the action of said last convention. We, therefore, acting under said call, invite all our fellow Democrats who are opposed to the re-nomination of the present State officers, to meet with us in mass meeting in the Court House in Aiken, S. C., on the 17th of March, at twelve o’clock m., to select delegates to the convention called to meet in Co lumbia.
