Samples are shown ;ving the prevailing soiuber effect, complished in the weaving by hav- g the warp and woof of different lors. Women who have the white Paisley 'hawls of twenty or thirty years ago aid away among their treasures hould produce them now and make them over into the prettiest of opera cloaks. They are lined with shot elk or brocade of bright colors, and iave double-shirred capes of the bor der edged with its own fringe. A pretty way of introducing color into somber gowns is to make the facing frills, which form an indispen. sable feature of every trained skirt, of some highly contrasting color. One elegant gown, all iu black, with jet embroidery to the knees, has three arlet frills for a facing. When the drt is on the floor they are hidden, ut as soon as the wearer lifts the gown he bright color gleams out with good 'effect. Origin of Child Marriage. Child marriage in India is said by a writer iu the Indian Appeal to have had its origin at the time of the Mo hammedan invasion. Conversion to Islam was the principal object of the Mussulman conquerors, and to facili tate this they-began to marry by bru tal^ force the girls of the Hindus. Cruel and oppressive as they were, they paid some respect, however, to married Hindu women. To secure the safety of Hindu girls, the institu tion of early marriage* became indis pensable. Gradually the practice de veloped into a superstition among the olil men and women of Hindu fami lies, who think their hearts will not be consumed on the funeral pyre if death \frere to intervene before they had witnessed the marriage of the grandchildren.—[Boston 1 ranscript. Shot-Shedding Ram. The back frame of the big United States defense ram is now in place at the Bath Iron Works,'and shows the skeleton of the great hulk in all its oddity. The philosophy of the whole thing is now made clear at a glance, and any man with an idea of the com parative ease with which a shot can be deflected when strickiug upon an ang ling surface will see that the gun cap able of piercing that armed deck is not made yet.
