Marcus Horlbeck, convicted before Judge Hutson, at the Februn^- term of court, 1887, in (Ijiarleston county and sentenced to be hanged, has had the death penalty removed from over his head, and his sentence has been commuted to imprisonment in thc ffitate prison, at hard labor lor life. The evidence brought out at his trial wasof considerable weight, but of such a character as to create a doubt in the minds of the jury as to the justice of inflicting the death pen- slty. Garrett Still on Top. Baltimore, March 23.—It is stated on good authority that the option will remain open to the Ives-Stayncr syn dicate for the control of the Bnltimort and Ohio Railroad until April 1. Gar rett, it is said, cleared $200,000 out ol the Sully syndicate failure, and it i- slso etated that the Garrett interest has purchased all the stock of the Johns Hopkins University. It exeellsall other varieties in the amount of lint yielded trom a given amount of seed cotton. My entire crop averaged these figures.
