An Obstreperous Etlitoi.
That officious fish department in Co
lumbia has several agents in our riven-
spying upon our fishermen. We hope
if any one should be indicted, every
juryman will insist that they be ac
quitted. The people of this low Coun
ty have to icmain in this mdari il re
gion and sutler all the Consequence
the year round, and it is mighty hard
if the poor men of this town cannot
make a living out of the waters sur
rounding them. If we were on a jury
totry one of our fishermen, we should
stay in the Jury room six months be
fore we would agree to a verdict of

Marcus Horlbeck, convicted before
Judge Hutson, at the Februn^- term
of court, 1887, in (Ijiarleston county
and sentenced to be hanged, has had
the death penalty removed from over
his head, and his sentence has been
commuted to imprisonment in thc
ffitate prison, at hard labor lor life.
The evidence brought out at his trial
wasof considerable weight, but of
such a character as to create a doubt
in the minds of the jury as to the
justice of inflicting the death pen-
slty.
Garrett Still on Top.
Baltimore, March 23.—It is stated
on good authority that the option will
remain open to the Ives-Stayncr syn
dicate for the control of the Bnltimort
and Ohio Railroad until April 1. Gar
rett, it is said, cleared $200,000 out ol
the Sully syndicate failure, and it i-
slso etated that the Garrett interest
has purchased all the stock of the
Johns Hopkins University. None ol
the stock of the road was offered foi
sal© to-day.

I would respectfully inform the farmers of Aiken and adjoining Counties,
that I have on hand 1200 Bushels of Peterkin Crossed Cotton Seed for
sale at the following reasonable prices for Cash or Exchange, viz: 60 cents
per bushel (of 30 pounds) delivered at Aiken Depot—50 cents per bushel de
livered at my barn, or I will exchange l bushel of Peterkin Seed for two and
one-half bushels of any other cottonseed delivered at my barn 2' c miles
from Aiken. This seed is very prolific. I commenced using it in 1SS4, and
have continued it ever since to the exclusion of any other seed with most
gratifying and profitable results. Notwithstanding the unfavorable seasons
of the past year, I will realize from my entire crop of 78 acres, one good 400
pound hale of cotton to the acre. It exeellsall other varieties in the amount
of lint yielded trom a given amount of seed cotton. Cotton from Pcterkin's
Crossed Seed gins easier than any other cotton and makes a nett return from
100 pounds of seed cotton, of 38 to 40 pounds of good Hut cotton. My entire
crop averaged these figures. I gave special references last year,but tliesatisfac
tiou given to all those who bought from me then, makes it unnecessary for me
to more than to refer you to any one who lias used my seed. I also offer
25 Bushels of Kaffir Com,
