jtyftial Jotires. Doctor Griffith Coming Again. On Wednesday and Thursday, February 2nd and 3rd, Dr. Griffith, Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat specialist, who is well known in Yorkville, will again visit this city to continue his work of treating diseases of these organs and fitting glasses. Consult him at the Shandon Hotel on above dates. 8 ft 2t Appreciation.. Since coming into their midst, the congregations of Hickory Grove and Smyrna, have reminded us often of their interest in the temporal welfare of their pastor and his family. As an evidence of our appreciation, we wish to say that we are making daily use of their gifts. Our endeavor shall be to give a higher expression in a faithful service in spiritual things. G. L. Kerr. She (fotton IRarhet. Yorkvllle, Feb. 1.?Cotton 14}. New York Market. New York, Jan. 31.?Spot closed quiet; 5 points higher; middling uplands 14.60; middling gulf 14.85; sales 7,575. Futures opened and closed steady as follows: Feb. 14.30; Mar. 14.35; April 14.35; May 14.41; June 14.36; July 14.35; Aug. 13.93; Sept. 13.95: Oct. 12.56; Nov. 12.36; Dec. 12.35. New York, Jan. 31.?The cotton market was quiet but '-nerally steadier today as there was nothing in the news to confirm Saturday's rumors of an easier spot situation in the south and the close was steady at a net advance of 6 to 14 points. . The opening was steady at a decline of 5 points to an advance of 2 points, near positions being lower, while late months were relatively firm on numerous reports from the southwest claiming that the precipitation so far this winter had not been sufficient to put a good season in the ground in view of the abnormally dry weather of the preceding 12 months. Local professionals took short side at the start, and there was some irregularity during the early session, but prices gradually !m proved on trade Duymg ana a demand from foreign houses. The southern did very little selling here during the early trading, but the offerings were not aggressive enough to suggest an easier spot situation and the market gradually firmed up during the afternoon when early sellers turned to cover and found very little cotton offering around the ring. After advancing to 14.39 for March and 14.48 for May, or 15 to 18 points net higher realizing caused a slight reaction, the close being a few points off from the best, with March at 14.35 and May at 14.41. Private wires received from various interior points during the day reported no weakness on the part of interior holders, and southern spot markets as officially reported early were unchanged. The situation in Texas with reference to new crop prospects is attracting a great deal of attention in the trade at the moment, as that state is largely looked to for such increase as there may be in the yield. Precipltat.on so far this winter has been heavier than was the case last winter, but well known local houses are receiving reports claiming that more rain is urgently needed to put sufficient moisture in the ground to carry the crop through a possibly dry growing season. Receipts at the ports today 16,428, against 19,455 last week and 36,221 last year For the week 100,000 bales, against 113,002 last week and 253.527 last year. Policy Holders While it is a fact that in due time each of you will receive the usual annual address of President Frelinghuysen relative to the record of the Mutual Benefit for the year 1909, still I beg to advise that advance information is to the efTect that the year just closed was the most prosperous, from every viewpoint, in the history of the grand old company, ana especially with reference to savings by reason of the mortality expense, amounting to nearly $900,000 less than normal, and because of this fact, notwithstanding the dividend scale for 1910 had already been increased something like 16% over the scale for the previous ten years, the directors have decided that dtiring 1910, $675,000 shall be distributed among the policy holders in the shape of an extra dividend. J The dividend will be paid in cash to those who have paid up policies, and ] will be applied to still further reducing the premium of those not fully ] paid up. This is but another lllus tration of the fact that the manage- ( ment never retains the money of policy holders beyond the amount neces- ] sary to absolutely safeguard the lat- , ter's interests. In this connection I beg to advise that there are now in | force in York county nearly 350 policies, representing about $525,000 in- | surance on the lives of her citizens, ( the individual policy holders carrying ] from $1,000.00 to $15,000.00 and from , one to five policies each. It is to your , interest, as well as that of your neighbors and friends, that you as- j sure them of the fact that you have 1UUI1U lilt; Jiuium X3t:iiciii 11/ uc an ] that was claimed for it, and more. SAM M. GRIST, Special Agent. CANDY! And did you know that nearly everybody loves candy, old and young, white and black alike? 'Tis funny how peo- ! pie fib about it tho"! So many grown people buy "candy for the children"? just like taking the children to the show "to see the animals." When we were boys, we thought that candy?beautiful candy, striped candy? streaked candy?looking like miniature barber poles?looking as pure and clean as icicles?with all of the colors of "the , rainbow's beauteous form," was the ' prettiest, sweetest, and most tempting thing in the world! And we think so yet. * ' Candy was dearer when we were , boys?dearer in a double sense. Those who did not feel able to buy such lux- , uries for their children, tried to persuade the little things that candy was not good for them. Herndon & Gordon. A. D.
