One of Charlotte's well-known residents, died suddenly on the 17th of July, 1891, at 12 o'clock at night, at the home of his fitther, T. R. Magill, on East Fifth street, of hemorrhage of the bowels. Mr. Magill was a native of Lancaster, S. C. He was a nephew of State Senator Major James R. Magill, of Kershaw oounty, S. C., and was born on the 27th of January, 1855, but had been identified with the people or this city ror a number of years. Upon his return from Rutherford College, where he was educated, he was made captain of the Hornet Fire company, and afterwards chief of the volunteer fire department of this city for two consecutive terms, and by his skill and efficiency, merited not only the approbation of every one, but won their plaudits. No kinder soul ever existed among us. Everybody had a good word for him. Being more than ordinarily bright, and possessed of a most affable disposition, he made friends of all who came in contact with him, and at his death there was not one that did not feel a pang of the deepest sorrow and regret. The funeral sendee was conducted by the Rev. R. C. Reed, and the old volunteer firemen attended in a body, selecting from the ranks James McClandane, L. Mishenhamer, W. S. Orr, ' David Whitt, E. Creswell, J. A. Bixby as pallbearers, after which a committee, consisting of J. M. Kendrick, D. M. Rigler, A. J. Huneycutt and Harrison Watts, officers of the old fire department, were appointed to draw up suitable resolutions of respect to the memory of the deceased, and present a copy of the same to his # bereaved family. XSTORY~ WITH A MORAL. VT~OT more than 100 miles from Yorkville, so ^ the story goes, there lives a prominent citien who is a member of a prominent church, ^he prominent citizen is, in fact, an officer in he prominent church, and a man who stands well n his community. He'is a man who has an exceedingly good opinion of himself, and wants to 10 looked upon by his neighbors AS A LEADER AMONG MEN. iow we will call this prominent citizen Smithere, but that is not his name. We simply use ho name in order to tell our story about Mr. 'Smithere" so that the reader can thoroughly omprehend It. Now Mr. Smithers had ono we don't know how many more) besetting sin, ,nd that was that HE WAS VERY FOND OF "MOUNTAIN DEW." le would sometimes take on more than ho could comfortably carry, and this not only woried his family but the pastor of the prominent church as well. The family did not know what o do about it. The pastor thought he did. He hought he could cure Brother Smithere. He, he pastor, concluded that he would preach the erring brother a sermon on the subject of the freat impropriety of prominent members of >rominent churches indulging in "mountain lew." So ono tine Sunday morning, so it is aid, he preached a sermon from his pulpit on hn mihioet of "church members and mountain dew." He showed the evil effects, etc., of the practice, [n'fact ho thought from the way Smithers was istening that he had adopted the proper course o accomplish his purpose. A majority of the arge congregation knew that the preacher was 'shooting" at Sinithers, in fact they thought hat Smithers also knew that ho was the target. No one was al?lo to see how .Smithers could con, inuo to consume the article under discussion 'after that sermon." The last hymn was sung and the congregation ,vas dismissed and it retired from tne nouse 0 partake of dinner, Smithers among the rest. \flor getting outside the preacher's intended tarjet called an old friend aside, and whispered mmothing like this in his ear : "That was a powirful sermon the parson preached this morning? ine of the best I ever heard. didn't he rub it into bill bobkinb, hough? I don't think I could hold my head lp if I was in Bill's place. Bill ought to be ishamed of himself. He ought not to drink mother drop. You know it has a bad influence >n the community for a man of Bobkins standng in society ana the church to drink liquor!" it would seem from the above statement that ;he "parson" had wasted his ammunition. the reader will naturally inquire ivhatall the foregoing has got to do with Family md Fancy Groceries ana Plantation Supplies. (Veil, we will now proceed to tell you by developng the moral of the above Bvory. We have sold 1 great many goods on time during the present ^ear. If you bought anything from us you know jxactly tne day when your account is due, and ve want to say that we expect you to settle your bill at the time promised. Now do not come to the conclusion that we are alking to or about Bill Bobkins, because we are lot. We are talking to YOU; that is if you owe is. Don't imagine that because you have propjrty. and have the reputation of paying your lebts that we will esteem it a privilege to carry pour account or note, because we won't. we are not millionaires, f some people do seem to think so. Don't conjlude that we intend this for your neighbor. (Ve say again that YOU are exactly the person ive mean if YOU owe us anything. You will please settle without delay. We are not reslonsible for the low price of cotton, or the backward condition of the crop. Now, friend, we have explained why we related the incident in regard to Mr. Smithers, and wo do not want pou to apply our request for a prompt and FULL jettlement to "Bill Bobkins." We know that iome people are prone to say "they don't mean me," md for this very reason we desire to say again, [and for the third time) to all such, that we do mean YOU, if you owe us for either supplies or ?uano. We trust that it will not be necessary to jay anything more to our friends and customers in regard to full and prompt settlements.
