October 21 37 j It Preaching at the Poor House. Rev. W. W. Ratchford will preach at the Poor House at 4 o'clock p. m., on the fourth Sunday in October. October 13 36 2t James Boyd Magill. One of Charlotte's well-known residents, died suddenly on the 17th of July, 1891, at 12 o'clock at night, at the home of his fitther, T. R. Magill, on East Fifth street, of hemorrhage of the bowels. Mr. Magill was a native of Lancaster, S. C. He was a nephew of State Senator Major James R. Magill, of Kershaw oounty, S. C., and was born on the 27th of January, 1855, but had been identified with the people or this city ror a number of years. Upon his return from Rutherford College, where he was educated, he was made captain of the Hornet Fire company, and afterwards chief of the volunteer fire department of this city for two consecutive terms, and by his skill and efficiency, merited not only the approbation of every one, but won their plaudits. No kinder soul ever existed among us. Everybody had a good word for him. Being more than ordinarily bright, and possessed of a most affable disposition, he made friends of all who came in contact with him, and at his death there was not one that did not feel a pang of the deepest sorrow and regret. The funeral sendee was conducted by the Rev. R. C. Reed, and the old volunteer firemen attended in a body, selecting from the ranks James McClandane, L. Mishenhamer, W. S. Orr, ' David Whitt, E. Creswell, J. A. Bixby as pallbearers, after which a committee, consisting of J. M. Kendrick, D. M. Rigler, A. J. Huneycutt and Harrison Watts, officers of the old fire department, were appointed to draw up suitable resolutions of respect to the memory of the deceased, and present a copy of the same to his # bereaved family.
