These annual summer meetings are becoming more interesting, and are important factors educationally and otherwise, in connection wit! the annual State fair in developing by experi ence as well as observations the varied resource: of our State. It is honed, therefore, that th< meeting at Bennettsville will be well attendee by all interested iu the cause of Agriculture ant thus give a further impetus to the efforts of oui {>eople in attaining the highest round in th< adder of prosperity and happiness. The Pee Dee section is little known to oui Piedmont people, and a visit to the county' o the State claiming, and 110 doubt justly so, thi credit of being foremost in cotton culture; witl her broad level fields; thrifty population anc unbounded hospitaliiy of her citizens, will in sure to the agriculturists of our State a pleasan recreation from their busy and trying experi ence at home and furnish them a delightful iin petus for the completion of their labors. We have the assurance of a full delegatior from our sister State Georgia, whoso presenci and the benefit of their counsel will add stil more to the interesting occasion. * The following is a list of the essayists and thei subjects: Col. Crawford Xeilson, of Baltimore, has been elected architect of the State house tc succeed Maj. Niernsee, deceased. ? The Rev. Dennis O'Connell, a forraei citizen of Fort Mill Township, in York county, has been appointed Rector of the American College, Rome, Italy. ? At the recent Court in Marion, Judge Hudson made an order which is worthy 01 commendation, and should be emulated bj Circuit Juges. He permitted no one to occupy seats in the bar but the lawyers and their clients. ? TheSRev. Dr. Lathan, of Due West, has sent Mr. James R. Magill, of Kershaw, a walking stick which he cut during a recent visit to Ireland from within the crumbled down walls of the old homestead of the father of Mr. J. R. Magill in that country. ? A colored boy named Wyatt Patterson aged about seven years, who lived on the plantation of Mr. L. J. Perry, in Lancastei county, was accidentally killed on Monday June 15, by falling from a wagon and having the wheels pass over his body. ? The town council of Lancaster have fined Col. J. D. Wylie, five dollars for shooting within the corporate limits of the town and Mr. P. L. Melton, of Colombia, one dollai for hitching his horse for a few seconds to the gate of the village cemetary while he stepped within to carry some flowers. ? On Thursday morning of last week, Dave Darby, a convict, sent to the penitentiary from York county for one year, whc was detailed to do some work on a fence made a break and ran three miles along the river and got in a swamp, but was closely pursued by one of the guards, who fired at him in the swamp and Darby surrendered. He wa? returned to the penitentiary. ? In the Barnwell Court of Sessions, lasl week, Rebecca Samuels, twelve years old was convicted of the murder of Lucy Graham, a six weeks' infant which she was nursing. She soaked the child in a pot ol concentrated lye. The only t heory for the crime is that the prisoner killed the child tc escape the duty of nursing it. This is the second crime of the same kind she has committed within two years. - She appeared tc be totally unconscious of what was going or during the trial and twice went to sleep ir the dock, with her head resting on hei hands. She has an innocent face, and is not apparently in the slightest degree affected by the result of her trial. Spartanburg Court of Sessions.?In the Spartanburg Court of Sessions, the jurj In the case of Ed. Bundy, colored, for the murder of a white woman named Annie UonlrtYion rofnrnorl u VPrdlPt of fTUiltV lXVVQiiiuu 4 vvMkuvv? ? ? 0 w They remained in consultation 30 minutes Bundy was sentenced by Judge Wallact to be hanged August 9th. The evidence on the part of the State proved, beyond dispute, that the prisoner killed Annie Heckman, March 5, 1885, by shooting hei five times at her house; and there was nc plea or evidence of self-defence. The defendant's plea was partial intellectual insanity, popularly known as men tal delusion, and also homicidal mania, generally known as emotional insanity. A1 the outset in this case, an extraordinary motion was made by defendant's counsel and granted by Judge Wallace: That unless the solicitor would admit in evidence affidavits on behalf of the prisoner made by persons absent in Virginia, a commisior should issue from the court to take theii testimony. The Solicitor?Duncan?thereupon admitted the affidavits as evidence?s new thing in this State, but eminently right. Bundy was represented by Stanyarne Wilson, Esq., who in an eloquent and powerful speech of three hours retained the attention and interest of the jury, and many hearers who crowded the court room. The case will be carried to the supreme court.? Greenville News. In the Interest of Law and Life.? Judge Witherspoon's vigorous utterances in Chester have had a marked effect in promoting the enforcement of the liquor law. Two convictions under the law were had at the term of the Court last week, and several persons who were presented for its violation fled the town without ceremony. The fact that bench warrants are out for the apprehension of the fugitives will probably ensure their continued absence for the good ol the community. The grand jury were also earnestly urged by Judge Witherspoon to present person? who were known to be guilty of carrying concealed weapons, but made no presentments on this account. The Judges of the several circuits can do much, of course, towards arousing public opinion, and holding the grand juries to the line of their duty, Judge Witherspoon's earnest efforts in this direction deserve the highest commendation.?News and Courier. ALL persons who have not yet taken chances at the Bmrevand those that want more chances will please Gear in mind that AUGUST 26th will soon roll round and pass away, and the golden opportnnity to get a Buggy, Watch, or Machine For nothing will be gone, never more to return, at the Old Chap's. So if you want to get either of the above named articles free of cost, now is your time?the Old Chap is ready and willing to wait on you, and give you a chance for every 82.00 worth of goods you buy from him, and the goods will not cost you a cent more, as you will buy them just as cheap as you can gettliem anywhere in tlieState, as Yorkville sells better goocis for the money than any town in the State of S. C., and besides, this is no lottery scheme, as you Pay Nothing for the Chances. It is not like futures, where you have to anty up your margins every few weeks. Ministers of almost all denominations do not hesitate to accept chances. We have names from quite a number of States on our books, from South Carolina to New York, and we want it distinctly understood that we are, at this writing, very anxious to sell goods, Especially Summer Goods, Summer Dress Goods at almost your own price, Readv-Made Clothing, which fits so well, at reduced prices ; Cottonades, Summer Cassimeres, and all Summer Goods, of every description, at reduced prices, to close out and make room for Fall Goods. We would rather be troubled with your Greenbacks than our Summer rags. So do not think that we don't want your money. We certainly need it, and will give you as much for it as any firm in this country, and say thank you, too. We are yery liberal in many respects. If you are good, we will sell you all the goods you want ana do not ask you for ten times the amount of collateral, as you would us if we wanted that amount of money from you. Our goods are just the same as money, as we have to pay the cash for them. Had you ever thought of it in that light? So you see we have ten times as much confidence in you an as you nave in us. oo you see we think well of you.
