We learn that a letter has been received in this place from the superintendent of the penitentiary at Columbia, announcing the death of John Benfield, a convict in that institution, who was sentenced by the Circuit Court of York county, over a year ago, for a term of fifteen years, on conviction of burglary and attempt at highway robbery. JUDGE MACKEY'S SPEECH. On the first page of this paper we present a full synopsis of Judge Mackey's speech in the Court House at this place last Thursday evening. Taking Judge Mackey's public declarations as a test, he is "dreadfully in earnest" for political reform in this State; but from the tenor of his speech it will be seen that he desires the reformation to be brought about in the ranks of his own party. To this end his speech was mainly addressed to the Republicans present, and whether palatable to them or not, it cannot be denied that his admonitions on the score of reform, and especially the desire of seeking office, were wise and proper. FINE COTTON. Mr. T. W. Clawson, whose farm is immediately adjoiningthe town, has shown us some specimens from bis fields of the variety known as "twin cotton," which for prolific yield sur? -- - i:_ u passes any we nave yei seen, vn uue u?uu there were seven forms within a space of two inches ; on another three bolls and one bloom within two inches ; and on another there were two distinct bolls from one bloom. The cotton is verily as its name implies, and two years ago the seed sold at the fair in Charlotte for 860 per bushel. We have not seen his fields; but we learn that Mr. Clawson has the most promising crop of any planter in this section. He is one of our young, enterprising and progressive farmers, and as such, he is bound to succeed. CIRCUIT COURT. The special term of the Circuit Court closed its sessions on Friday evening last. At the time we went to press last Wednesday the indictments against Deputy Marshal Hubbard were set for trial, but on motion of counsel the cases were continued on the ground that the defendant was not ready for trial. This : ended the State docket. On the civil side a large amount of business was despatched, though no causes of general interest came be fore the court. The greater part of the equity business ended at this term consisted of j cases of longstanding which were on the dockets before Judge Mackey took the bench ; and we learn that it is with the view of clearing the dockets of these cases that he is appropria- ! ting the time to special terras which he is allowed for holiday or vacation from his duties as presiding Judge. The next term of the ' court will commence on the first Monday of j October next. DEATH OF DR. BEKKY. Dr. R. B. Berky, Surgeon to the military garrison at this place, since May, died here on Wednesday, 22nd instant. Dr. Berky was a native of the State of New York, though his home was in Milinesota. He entered the United States Army in 1861 as Surgeon with the rank of Major, and since the close of the war held the position of contract surgeon, in which capacity he has been on duty at various military posts in the South and West. Dr. Berky was about 46 years of age, and died of abscess of the liver, which disease had been preying upon him for some time. He leaves a widow and one child, who in their far-off western home may have the consolation of knowing that though the husband and father died among those who had not known him long, yet he was not among entire strangers, nor did he lack for any comfort or at tentiou th:it loving and sympathising hands could bestow. Members of Philanthropic Lodge, A. F. M., joined the military in his obsequies, aud his rcraaius were committed to their last resting-place not only with military j honors due to his rank, but also in accordance ! with the rites of the Ancient Fraternity, of which he was a member. Dr. Berky is succeeded by Dr. P. Rector,! who was ordered from the post at Atlanta, j and arrived here last Saturday afternoon. C ONCERT AT THE FEMALE INSTITUTE. I The musical concert at the Female Institute, | on Friday evening last, was attended by a large and intelligent audience that manifested j an appreciative interest in the proceedings. { The young pupils in music, acquitted them-1 selves creditably in their several exercises, j giving evidence of careful instruction. A ; pleasing feature of the entertaiument was the reading of essays prepared by the pupils. ; The subjects, style and contents of these, evinced progress; and it was evident that the greater number?if not all of them?were; original compositions. The following were i the subjects: Miss Mary Harrisou?"Happiness more dependent upon what is within than what is without." Miss Salena Miller?"Know thyself." Miss Mary Adickes?"Good deeds never to i be forgotten or unrewarded." Miss Ida Boyd?"Our school days the happiest." Miss Belle Creps?"The Sabbath bell, and the train of thought it suggests." Altogether, the exercises afforded a pleas ant digression from the every-day routine of busy life. But more than this, it demonstrated that we have at our own doors, and within easy access, an educational institution of high merit, needing only the fostering care of our people to make it both an ornament and a blessing. As a home enterprise, it commends itself to our favor above others at a distauce; and every additional pupil placed within its jvalls, helps to provide the means for increasing its usefulness. After a brief vacation, the second session of the year opens the first week in August, as will be noticed by the advertisement in another column. COUNTY BOARD OF EQUALIZATION. The following is the order of Judge Mackey appointing the County Board of Equalization for York county: < Statu of Softii Cakoi.ina?("orvrv ok York. Pursuant to the Act of the General Assembly, entitled "An Act to reduce all Acts, and parts of Acts providing for the assessment and taxation of property into one Act, and to amend the same," approved March 19, 1874, I do hereby appoint Calvin Whisonant, Esq.,1 A. B. Springs, Esq., and E. N. Crawford, Esq., i members of the County Board of Equalization, in aud for the county of York. They will qualify by taking the oath prescribed by said I Act and filing the same in the office of the < Clerk of this Court. They will receive as j J compensation three dollars per day each for ( the time actually employed by them in dis- i charging the duties enjoined upon them by law, and five cents per mile each way as : mileage for travel actually performed therein. The Board of Equalization herein designated, shall, in the performance of their duty, ^ utterly disregard paragraph 3 of section 61 of ' the Act above specified, which paragraph j provides that "they shall not reduce the ag- s gregate value of real and personal property of s the county below the aggregate value thereof } as returned by the county Auditor, with the additions made thereto by said Auditor," the same being in the nature of a proviso, repug- i ( nantto the body of the said Act, and contrary ' i to the purpose for which the said County 1 Board of Equalization was created by the [ terras of the said Act, namely, that all prop- , erty liable to taxation "shall be entered on j the tax list at its true value," pursuaut to sec- i j tion 1, article 9 of the State constitution which I j declares, that "the General Assembly shall provide by law for a uniform and equal rate j " of assessment and taxation, and shall prescribe ^ such regulations as shall secure a just valua- , tion for taxation of all property," <fcc. The Clerk of the Court shall forthwith furnish each of the persons herein named, with I an attested copy of this order. t Witness my hand at Yorkville, this thirtieth j t day of June, A. D. 1874. I j T. J. MACKEY, i Circuit Judge, j Another Danger.?There were indica- i a tions in the last Congress of an unfavorable ! 1 sentiment toward universal suffrage. This j was shown in the law to apply the educational test to the United States jury panel. No one j jwho cannot read and write can sit on an Uui- j j ted States jury. It was urged that the large | itiUnv rvfiirnnront ntlH ill SnmP nflSPS. VICIOUS I immigration was costing the country enormous j ' amounts of money, in the iact that these im- ^ migrants entered at once into the body politic ! t] and became voters?that they at once became j the tools of demagogues to ruin the country. It was also urged that what these immigrants | v were to the North the colored people were to s the South, and that there should be some national restraiut upon the right of suffrage, c such, for instance, as an educational or property qualification. The condition of New York under Tweed, and of South Carolina under the rule of the colored majority, was held upas evidence in proof. There were several Republicans carried away by this feeling, and it is said that it was growing in j favor. t'< We only allude to this danger in order to show a further reason why this State should be ruled in a far different way from what it has been?by honesty, economy and public spirit in its administration.?
