Accident.?We regret to learn that on Friday afternoon last, Daniel Coleman, Esq., of Concord, had his leg broken by jumping off the freight train on the N. C. Rood upon which he was riding. The train was running very slow, and had almost stopped, when Mr. C. leaped off.. It seems that the accident was not caused by the motion of the train, bat from the position of his leg when he struck the ground. Columbia Market. September 14, 1858. There has been so little done in ootton for the , past two days, that we find it difficult to give a correct scale of quotations. Still the few bales that were sold showed that a fair article will now freely command lljfirtll j cents. New Orleans. At Poatiao a gentleman well known to Norris got aboard, and took a seat immediately opposite a nice, seusitive young lady. He was addicted to the use of tobacco, and was en* deavoring to break himself of the habit, as he kept an unlightcd cigar in his mouth. When Norris came along to collect and examine tickets, the young lady very pettishly requested him to "have that man stop puffing his nasty cigar, or put him out of the cars." "Why, madarae," said Norris, blandly, "the cigar is not lighted." "Well it has been," she snapped out, "andhe's been puffing his nasty smoke in my face." Norris reached around and took the cigar from his friend's mouth, and presenting it to Madam Squeamish, quietly asked, "Which end of it was lighted, madame?" There was a general roar among the passengers, and the young lady wilted. conseql'ence of the election of a sectional Pkesident.?The Richmond Enquirer, in noticing the recent speech of the Hon. W. W. Botce, iu South Caroliua, says: "We agree with Mr. Boyce that 'the election of an Abolitionist to the Presidency, or one pledged to carry out that policy, upon a programme of principles hostile to the South, would indicate such a settled purpose to destroy ui, that it would be madness to await the final blow.' This was exactly the position maintained by Gov. Wise in 1856?and be was sustained therein with remarkable unanimity throughaut the South. And this will be again his position and that of the State of Virginia whenever a sectional candidate is elected. To await an overt act would indeed be folly." Revival at Chapel Hill.?We learn from an esteemed friend that a remarkable revival of religion began a fortnight ago, in the Methodist Cbnroh in Chapel Hill, and has gradually extended to other churches. About ono hundred souls have professed conversion, of whom some sixty are students in the University. Leaving out of view higher considerations, the philanthropist and statesman must rejoice to contemplate the diffu sion of true piety and sound morality which must follow a genuine revival of religion at our university.?North Carolina Standard. A Home Thrust,?The Washington Correspondent of the Baltimore Sun make the following ' pertinent inquiry. The heavy expenditures which must arise before the final disposal of the African negroes rescued from the slaver Echo, will doubtless turn the minds of our statesmen to the whole subject of interference with the slave trade. Why should we keep up a squadron on the coast of Africa, at a yearly expense of at least half a million dollars, when so great powers as France and England are carrying on the trade under the name of apprenticeship ? New Obleaxs.?The Picayune, reviewing the material progress of New Orleans, says that it has escaped entirely the late commercial revulsion, and its commerce shows an increase, while in every other commercial city there has been a decrease. In all the leading staples there has been an excess of receipts over last year. The population of the city is given as 225,000. In 1840, it was 102,143. Columbia Market. Columbia, September 13. Cotton.?Out previous weekly report of the Cotton market closed at a somewhat small demand for the article, and the ruling rates were H to 111c. The week jugt brought to a olose opened with a rather better feeling, and with prices tending in favor of sellers. But on the arrival of the news by the Asia, reporting an advance of ?d. in Liverpool, and also reporting the aspect of trade generally as favorable, a new impulse was given to our market, and prices advanced J to fc., and in some instances }c. on former quotations. The sales of the week comprise about 190 bales, and it was all of the new crop. We quote 11$ to lljfc. as the value of the article at the close of the week. Country Bacon.?We can only report there is none of this article coming in, and that it would freely command 12 cents for Hog round, if offered. Lard.?The article of Lard is in good demand, and 12 cents per pound is freely paid fojr a choice article. S* * "V Corn.?The stock of Corn is light, anil prices j are looking up. We now quote 75* cents per ! i badicl. Cote Peas.?There is only a demand fur j j Peas, and therefore there is no change in prices of I j 80 to 85 cents per bushel. Flour.?The stock of Flour is large, and prices | ' are tending downwards. We now quote $2 50 to : $2.62 per bag for fine to superfine brands, r nd j $2.75 per bag of 98 tbs for extra family Flour. i We have heard of some astonishing cures I being made by Prof. DeGrath's Electric Oil.
