A v ' ^ ' ; Gentlemen.?I observe in your paper of yester- i day, .mr nomination for the United States Senate. I feel sincerely grateful for the kindness implied | in this nomination, but I am constrained to de- ' alin'o entering into competition for this distinction. | . I an entirely satisfied with the position I now i hold as one of the Representatives of the people. ,j Its sphore of usefulness is sufficiently ample. In- ^ deed, the Tariff, the most important of all subjects, , after the slavery question, peculiarly appertains t lb the House of Representatives, and as it is my ardent desire to contribute to the ultimate tri- j umph of the great cause of Free Trade, absolute and unlimited, attainable only by direct taxation, ( I feel that my place of present usefulness is the ! 1 popular bravch of the Government. i 2 "* I might pause here, but the interest I feel in j ) the subject its one of the people, induces me to say j more, l consider tfiis me most important uieu- v tion for the Senate ever had in this State since the p formation of the Government I shall not dwell npon the desirableness of preserving the prestige of the State for intellect. Wo all fed this.- I rise to higher ground. The condition of public affairs; Kansas slipping from our grasp, Walker decreeing, freedom by infinite argument of manifest ? destiny and "cold winds from the mountains," F the'Administration voiceless as the grave, the dem- F ocratic party, North, jubilant. I Surely, if danger .ever necessitated wisdom of c action, it is now. i-earnestly .'hope, therefore, ^ fbat the action of the State may be ef the wisest. 8 Public opinion in. Soulbi Carolina has always, 8 hitherto, in great emergencies, risen to theirievel. * I tfuat it will do sp now, and that the high mis- J si on of Senator may be conferred under the exclu- c aire influence of great considerations of public in- ? terest. Respectfully, ' c . ' , - '. * . W. W. BOTCE. ? bat Erskine could not have spared mm. A Den of Gamblers Surprised.?Our friend, Co'.. J. D. Williams, brought to jail, on Sunday f last, four white men whom he had .caught that morning gambling with his negroeB. We are not I disposed to excite the public against these men, I but as a public journalist wedeem it just to give E our approbation of any act that has a tendenoy to p remove the many pernicious practices and demer- I alizing influences that are at this time thrown in a the path of oar negroes. Col. Williams deserves n the approbation of the whole community for acting thus promptly and fearlessly in this case. PRESS FOR SALE, ?m/? have received instructions from the owTT ner, Mr. ROBINSON, to sell the PRINCETON PRESS recently used in our office, at very cheap rates. We exchanged this Press for a new machine (a Princeton Press of larger dimensions) at a merely nominal cost; and we can assure our ootemporaries that it was laid aside for no fault whatever. The Bed measures 44 by 28 inches. Mr. ROBINSON promises to put it up in good working order, and to furnish it with his recent valuable improvements; at a charge considerably below the original cost. Our experience warrants us in recommending it as the cheapest Press that can be used in a flourishing country office; especiallv so. as it is offered on accommodating terms.
